An Important meeting of the Young Men's Democratic UluD is called for this evening, at 8 o'clock, In the City Court Room. Oar thermometer got up to 02 to day at 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock, and yet it does not seem to have been as warm as it was on Saturday, 1 1 1 The Sulvan Grove took down this morning a very large crowd,of col ored excursionists. The boat ap. peared to be literally packed. 1 1 t . It was all that the Seaside 1L 1L could dotoaccomtuodate the crowds that went down to the Hummock on Saturday evening and yesterday afternoon. " The view of the city to be had from the belfrv of (irace Church is - m extensive and magnificent. It looks like one huire trarden, embowered as It Is In trees. There was much promise of rain here last evening, anl there was a little, but hardly enough to wet .the ir round. There weie good --ruins West of us on Friday and Saturday Mr. S. B. Anders sends us the first cotton bloom or the season, from Bladen couutv. It was plucked on his farm, near Magruder, on Friday last, the 221 inst. Cotton and corn are both promising well in that locality.' The ladies of Fifth Street M. E. Church will give au excursion to the Hummocks on Wednesday. Their tickets will. b good on any train running during the day. The ladies will-sell refreshments on the Hum mocks. P.Taylor, formerly of this city, but for some years past a resi dent of Oxford, has been appointed Resident Engineer of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley R. R. Gen. Tay lor is a civil engineer by profession and in former years did much work in that line In this State. We are glad to note his appointment to the responsible position he will flu and think the authorities have done wisely in tendering It to him. Well Done. We call attention of our readers to the fact that Mr. 8. H. Fishblate, well termed the King Clothier, has orderHfcand will receive in a few days several hundred Cleveland and Thurman white beavers which he will dispose of to the members of the Young Men's Democratic Club as $1.00 each. Other houses have advertised them at $1.50. Mr. Fish blate thinks that In a cause of this kind, a merchant should be patriot ic enough to furnish articles neces sary for a club at about as near cost as possible. We are of the same opinion. . - .' Tlx Boa Sheet. The box sheet for the complimen tary concert at the'O'pera nouse to morrow night Is not badly cut up The work was neatly and scientifi cally done, and nearly every chair in the orchestra, two rows of bench. half of the boxes and a number of seats in the dress circle have been very prettily removed from the dia- rrrrt.ni. -All of this coes to indicate that the audience will -be one of the largest, most cultured and most ap preciative that has everbeen known at an amateur concert in our pretty little Opera House; which is all as it should be. . Ieath of Mr. C." S. "Love. We regret very much to learn of the death of Mr. Charles S. Love, a hirrhlv ekteemed resident of this city, the sad event having occurred at his residence on Fourth street, near Mulberry, yesterday morning. He had been sick for about a week, with typhoid fever, but he was not considered alarmingly ill and his death was somewhat sudden and unexpected. Mr. Love was the sen ior member of the firm of C. S. Love & Co., commission merchants and agents here for the steamer Cape Fear plying between this city and Payette ville, and was a gentleman of strict probity of character and high ly" esteemed by all with whom he came in contact. II ot Enough for You? The heat has been intense every where. Coming so early in the sea son it is really more oppressive than usual, June is not wjnt to do this thing. Generally, it is in every way a delightful month, although some- times, last year, for instance, we had too much rain during the month. Onr warmest weather gen erally dawns upon us about the first of July, the Fourth being almost in variably an intensely warm day. The hottest we have had here yet, however, is 92, and that was on Sat urday. In New York on Friday H was 90 at 1 o'clock andQQ at 6 o'clock and on Saturday It was 98 at 3:30 p. m. The suffering in consequence was very great. The Signal office twmta Rav that it la the warmest -i i . - weather we hare had in June in seventeen years. v. -down Bathing Suits. ' : j -With gootl judgment a novel by Amanda ,M. Douglas . has been chosen to inaugurate the Manhat tan Series.7- No writer is more popular with "the v general ' novel reader, and. this first book, "The Midnight Marriage," has all theele- fu excitement : its action is rapid, of readers awake till the smalt nours of -the morning with' its stirring interest. "The Manhattan Series" certainly promises very well and its encouragement solely of American authors deserves liearty. support. It is for sale at the book stores. X An Interesting Occasion. Pythagoras Lodge of Southport has invited the Masonic fraternity of this city to be present at the in stallation of officers of that lodge to-morrow evening, when Mr. E. S. Martin, of St. John's Lodge' No. 1, of this city, will deliver an address. Grand Master C. H. Robinson will install. the officers of Pythagoras Lodge. The committee representing the Lodge have made arrangements with Capt. Crapon, of the Steamer Hcssie, to carry visiting brethren, the boat leaving here at 5 p. m. The committee have also secured the services of the Cornet Concert Club, who will furnish music for the occasion. . After the Masonic exercises there will be a musical entertainment in the Court IIouse, and Profs. Schloss, Wilson and Greenewald will render some of their choicest selections. We acknowledge the courtesy of an invitation to be of the party -on this interesting occasion. ; ,The Editorial Goshen It reallv does seem necessary to remind some people that it costs money to conduct a newspaper as well as other business enterprises! that the printers must be paid promptly in hard cash at the end of each week; that paper is cash; that ink is cash; that rent, fuel, taxes, postage, and a hundred other minor items must be paid for in money and that the newspaper publisher must himself eat food, sleep under a roof and wear clothes enough to cover his nakedness. It is really hard to impress these facts upon the minds of some people. The news paper man is the last to be paid; he is expected to work for nothing, or next door to it. He must be a good party man and subscribe more lib erally than any dozen .other individ uals in the community to the, suc cess of the campaign. If a big cele bration is on hand he must give ad infinitum of his stock in trade while others are .paid down in hard cash for all they furnish. If there are any quarrels on hand he must take them up and bear them on his own broad shoulders and, if need be, make the .thing a "personal matter. He must foster all kinds of enter prises, 1 good, bad . and indifferent, write ilp his own town at all times, in season and out of season, father all the lies told and let somebody else get the - credit of all f the good things tieTmay say and feel glad, glorious and happy when some one pats hiiii'on the shoulder and says tohim:"TbatTwa8 a good thing of yours but Jt would have been a little more telling if you had said so and so." ;. -v- But prohablvttie worst evil of all, the most harro wing to the soul, the most exasperating to the feelings, is to have some one step in and say, as some one did step in and say to us this morning; "Our organization is to have an excursion this week and won't you please publish this little local for-us? We can't af ford to advertise." This is only a 8peciuien and we give ithei;e merely as the latest. Verily, the editorial Goshen is anything but a land of iniiK and honey. . . j . The line of the Cape Fear & Yad kin Valley Railroad,- between this city and Fayettetille, is definitely located. It crosses Black Riyer at an elevated bluff On the west side, about a quarter of a mile above Union Bridge. The work, except where" the main streams are crossed, will prove of the lishtest character, the! side ditches almost making the en tire road bed. For easy grades and light curvature or alignment there is no road in the State wh ich can show such a record. In Gen. - Tay lor's department there are but two curves in a distance of about 30 miles, the length of the two being? only about 2,300 feet. The convict labor, about 200 strong undei CoL Hicks, will begin at Black River on the first of next January. . Moonlight Excursion. ; A moonlight excursion, probably the last on this moon, will be given to Wrightsville aridthe Hummock on the Seacoast R. R. to-morrow night. The train will leave here at 7i20 and leave the Hummock on the return at 11:30. The harpers will furnish music and there wilL be dancing in the pavilion, interspersed with strolls on the moonlit beach. Mr. J. F. Byrde, of Nichols, S.
