He ridicules the belief that frost han anything to do with it: "The reen matter in the tissue of a leaf is coiu: posed of two colors red and blue. When the nap ceases to flow in thf autumn, and the natural growth oe the tree ceases, oxidation of the tis sue takes place. Undercertain con ditions the green of the leaf changes to red; under different conditions it takes on a yellow or brown tint. This difference in color.is due to the difference in combination of the original constituents of the green tissue, ami to the varying condi tions of climate, exposure and soil A dry, cold climate produces more brilliant foliage than one that is damp and warm. This is the reason tnat our American autumns are ho much more gorgeons than those of England." D. G. Davidson, with the Boston liudoef. formerly with Boston Jour nal. . J NEW YORK OBSERVER A committee of the faculty of Har vard College has just submitted to that body a report on the whole subject of athletics and athletic sports in college, which is in the main very favorable to their encour agement. Certain objections brought against them are folly considered by the committee. -With regard to the allegation that they are not fa vorable to the health of the stu dent?, the committee concludes em phatically to the contrary. It saysi also, that athletic sports "do not seriously interfere" with attendance on college courses; that participa tion in them lowers neither the standing of those who take part in them nor the general standing of the college, and that they have in the main ."a good moral influence" upon those who take part in them and who witness them. In the ex penses which they involve no seri ous objection is found. About 400 students contribute less than $10 each in a year, and more than 20 contribute nothing. Those who! ontribute more freely can afford it. The committee find abuses to be corrected and makes suggestions for extending the facilities for exercise and sports at the college and iin provingathletic management. Many interesting facts are tabulated in support of the committee's views, and the report will do much toward clearing op the misinformation and misconceptions that prevail on the subject. . An Important Element Of the success of Hood's Sarsaparilla is the fact that every purchaser re ceives a fair equivalent for his mon ey. The familiar headline "100 Doses One Dollar," stolen by imitators, is original with and true only of Hood's Barsaparilla. This can easily be proved by any one who desires to teat the matter. For real economy: buy opjy Hood's Bareaparilla. Sold by all drasrglita. ESTABLISHED IN 1823 The Oldest and Best Family Newspaper.
