It is interesting to notq what our Democratic friends in Washington City think of the nominations.iuarie at Chicago. The New York I for aid publishes a great many interviews and all point the same way. It will not by any means be a difficult mat ter to beat the ticket. The big mo nopolists are, it is true, with the Republicans but they are always (here and there is one source of rev coue, at all events, that is not avail able for campaign funds this year. They can't tax tho office-holders. Boodle vs. the People may in real- ity be the big iatie of this citmpaign and if it is no one need fear for the result. The New York Herald pub lishes editorially some extracts 011 this part of the subject, from the in terviews had with Speaker Carlisle and Senators Gorman and Kenna. It says: In 1880 Indiana was carried by the Republicans by the judicious dis tribution of a great quantity of "new two dollar bills." It was the same year in which General Garlield asked Jay Hubbell "How are the department doinc?" Mr. Hubbell being the man who went about ex torting campaign funds from poor government clerks. That game Is played out. Shak er Carlisle said shrewdly to vllcald reporter: - "In my judgment the percentage of voters who can be bought is very small. I think the Republicans have uniformly controlled this class in the past. If they control them again this year it seems to me they will only be holding their own with out making any substantial gains."" When a party takes to buying voters it has to buy the same men at every recurring election, and the reputation or dispensing boodle is. as home wealthyCongressiuen know. vry costly ana in results worse thau valueless. Senator Gorman said concerning the Republican boodle circular: "It is a mistake to think votes'are ix purchasable commodity. Of course there are men who will sell their votes. In great centres of popula tion, where men are out of employ ment and more or less destitute, un occasional vote can be bought. But ! it is only m rare instances. 1 have had a long experience In politics, and I give it as iov firm conviction that no State or Presidential elec tion -was ever won by the corrupt use of money." Mr. Gorman added: "No more erroneous opinion ex ists than that the poorer classes of our people sell their right of suf frage to the highest bidder. My ex perience is that there is more Inher ent honesty and devotion to party principle among them than among what use common lv called 'the higher classes.1" " "The Democrats won the last elec tion fairly, and with only sufficient money to meet their legitimate cam paign expense. Thi every party must have. I have no doubt we 6hall secure all we need for this pur pose, aud if so It matters, but little to us how overflowing iiie 'barrel of our opponents may be. The. agi tation' of the tariff question may lose ua a district here and there, where some special Industry is af fected by the Mills bill, bat I think lo,- will be oiUet other district1 that every one we bv a irain in some Senator Jveiiua aid: t will not work: Thy wont raise from . n ;tlie manufacturers and others whose names appear in the Herald a tract ion-of the amount ncil to- wrest bv threats' and c". 10 " from - the poor ciiarw nd clerks in the Executive Departments here. "You ask why the manufacturers t. f- 1 won t coninoute. x answer, upc;iusu nil the manufcturers, I freely be lieve, are satisfied with thu Mills bill. The woollen mei are, I know, but thev dare not say so. The iron men have nothing to omplaiu of, neither have the plate glass men, nor the heads of many other great interests. They will not contribute because it is not to their advantage to do so. You ask me if we will re tain our hold on the House in the next Congress. I answer candidly when I say that not only will we re tain our present majority, but w? will increase it largely." " 1 Hoodie will not work, as these two shrewd political managers. Sen ators Gorman and Kenna, know. The coming canvass is to be fought out in politics, and the attempt to carry it by bribery on a vast scale is hopeless. The combination of protected monopolies, corporations, trusts and canitulist manufacturers against the people will fail, if for no other reason because the people win resent th dictation of those who want to be their masters and begin by organizing to buy them like sheep. ; mnt Wins. These remedies have won their great popularity purely on their merits. Win. H. Green, Drug gist. : JUNK JOKES. The greatest truths are sometimes expressed in the fewest words.
