Wescott was at his store, some unknown man went to his house on Fifth, between Nun and Church streets, and demanded admission of his " wife. She told him to leave . .or she would, shoot him. He then slammed the gate as if he had left the premises and when Mrs. Wescott went to the door to see if it was locked she" saw hiin sit ting on the steps. She cannot tell whether he was white or colored. His object was probably intimida tion and robbery. Keady for an Emergency. Mr. John P. Garfell is a live man. He has fully appreciated the fact that a much larger number of peo ple are to be fed this week and has laid his plans accordingly. He has now on hand nearly 200 beeves and nearly 300 sheep and has arranged to receive others every day this week. He has contracted to supply the troops with fresh meat and wilj furnish one party in the city with netirly a thousand pounds every day. His city customers will find him equal to the occasion andmeats purchased of him will be delivered free in any part of the city and at Wrightsville and the Hummocks. To-Night's Entertainment. "The Chimes of Normandy," Planquette's delightful opera, . will be presented at the Opera House to night, the first of the season here of the Crescent Opera Company. We think that "we are safe in promising a pleasant evening's entertainment to those who may attend to-night. The troupe is composed of about twenty persons, half of whom are ladies, and among them are some eminent artists. Mr. Fred Mor daunt is the manager of the com pany, and Mr. J. R. Fairland, who possesses a high reputation in the musical world, is the director. Pop ular prices are announced " for the season, 50 cents for general admis sion and 75 cents, for reserved seats. At St. Thomas Yesterday. The services at St Thomas' Cath olic Church yesterday were unusual ly elaborate and impressive. At the Pontificial High Mass at 10:30 o'clock Bishop Haid was the celebrant. There were piesent at this service His Eminence, the Cardinal, and the Rt. Revs. Bishops Foley, Nor throp and Haid, and also Very Rev. Dr. Dnmont, of Maryland. Bishop Haid was assisted in the celebration by Very Rev. M. S. Gross, V. G.,and Rev. Fathers White, Riley, Hill and Bernard. Bishop Northroplwas at tended by Rev. Frederick Price. The sermon ori this occasion was preached by the Cardinal, on "The Divinity pf Christ," It was a mas terly effort, bold 'and aggressive in the Christian doctrine, terse, elo quent and argumentative arid wor thy of the Cardinal's high reputa tion as a pulpit orator; worthy also of hjs dignity, which His Eminence bears with so much honor. Those who heard the sermon pronounce it one of the clearest, luost beautiful and concise arguments in establish meut of the.Divinity of the Messiah that has ever been heard.. The conj gregation was very large and many were unable to gain admission to the church. At the night service -there was also a very large cQngregatiou Bishop Haid was formally installed on this occasion and he preached the sermon. It was a moving and eloquent discourse on "The true character of ' the Holy Catholic Church; its real mission in the world and its pure and holy teachings." ; City Co art.
