' - Merchants who do not observe the half-weekly holiday regularly should do so this week in order that cheir employes may have an oppor tunity of visiting Camp Pender at Wrightsville and of thus enjoying the Encampment. Capt. Virginius Ballard and Mr. Edward A. AVhitaker, at present citizens of Durham but formerly residents of this city, are visiting this place, much to the delight of their old friends who will give 4'Gin ny" and "Ed." a hearty welcome. The Rocky Mount Light Infantry, 42 strong, arrived here to-day and went down to the Encampment this forenoon. They are in full uniform but unattached. They will proba bly be assigned to the Second Regi ment. . They are the last company to go into camp. V i i .in- ii. i - - There are a large number of strangers in the city and at the Hummocks" but not as many, per haps, as wy expected to arrive here by this time. They will of course be coming in on every train during the continuence of the En campment. Rock Crystal Spectacles anttlS yegl usses Advice to old and young: ln se lecting spectacles you should be cau tious not to take more " magnifying vowcr than has been lost to the eve as in the same proportion that you pass that point of increase, will cause you further injury to the eye.- Using glasses of stronger power than is ne cessary is the daily'cause of prema ture old age to the sight. Jones requests us to state that about 40 horses are need ed for mounting the Scotland Neck Mounted Riflemen on the afternoon of the 24th., inst. and he hopes that these horses will be loaned for the purpose. They will be needed for about one hour only. Those who are willing to comply with this re quest will please make notification at this office or direct to Gen. Jones, by mail, at Wrightsville. On the Track. The street cars are now running. To the agreeable suprise of the offi cers of the; road, four arrived here last night, instead of two. These' were put on fhe track last night and are all running to-day. Four others are expected next week Those now here are summer cars, open at he sides, with seats facing to the front, and with a central aisle. It is un- dersrood, we believe, that the drivers shall also be the conductors. The E. J3. Barker. Capt; R. H. Beery's new steam yacht; the Little ' Minnie was in spected yesterday and received her license.. . She left here this morning1 for the Hummocks, going down the river and outside to get there, and will probably arrive at her destina tion this afternoon. Capt. Beery has made application for a change of her name and as soon as permis sion to do this has been received, say about the latter part of next week, she will be known asthe E.G. Barker. ; ' The Opera Last Night. The entertainment at' the Opera House last night, on which occasion the Chimes of Normandy was re peated, was not as well attended as it should have been. A fair house is the size of it, when really it should have been a packed house. As on the previous night the opera was presented with a life,-spirit and vim that soon spread its infection to the audience. Miss Alice Johnson, as Serpolette,is a beautiful, charming, vivacious actress, and delights the audience with everything tnat she says and does; Miss Mamie Chase, as Germaine, shows an excellent ap preciation of the character and her melodies are delightful, while Mr. Morgan, the tenor, Mr. Willard, the baritone, and . Mr. Devereux in his realistic rendition of the decrepit old miser were indeed excellent.- As we said' yesterday, the chorus is a very gooa one, excenens in siage ac tion as well as in choral rendition. The Mascotte will be presented to night and we hope to a full house. Headquarters for BassBalls, Bats Masks, Gloves, Belts &c, is at He ins berger's. . t GUARD AGAINST THE STKIKK, And always have a bottle of Acker's English Remedy in the house.
