city, prospecting with a view of
opening a shoe store. Heis a mem
ber of the firm of Geo. R. French &
Sons, one of the largest shoe houses
in the State.
The Elizabeth City Economist
rises to remark: "Onr soldier boys
have all returned, with the 'excep
tion of a few that stopped off on
the route to visit friends. A good
time is reported and all are of the
opinion that Wrightsville is the
place for the encampment of the
State Guard'
At the Reach.
Yesterday was one of the most de
lightful days of the season at Caro
lina Beach. Between 400 and 500
people visited the place and every
one you met was loud in praise o
its pleasantness. Quite a large num
ber of bathers took advantage of
the splendid condition of old ocean,
while others remained at the hotel
and enjoyed the delightful Southern
breeze.
Burglary.
The residence of Col. Ji. It. Moore,

the necessary preparations for the

The American Magazine.
The Midsummer issue of the
American Magazine abounds with
interesting and timely literature.
Dr. W. F. Hutchinson presents the
fourth of his articles in the series
"Along the Caribbean." Another
entertaining paper is entitled
"Where Burgoyne Surrendered,"'
by C. H. Crandall. Frederick G.
Schwatka tells about "The Ameri
can Arctic Savage," and Trebor Ohl
has "Six Story-Tellers for Children."
Joel Benton has a poem on "Mid
summer," and Sara F. Goodrich de
scribes -""The Country in Midsum
mer." Mary Agnes Tineker's novel,
"Two Coronets," is continued. Ad
ditional poems are "An Indian Love
Song," "Frederick III. of Ger
many," and "August." The short
stories, which are particularly bright
and suitable for hot weather, are a
feature of the issue. The depart
ments under the general caption of
"Our Cabinet" are filled with useful
and interesting matter. The Edi
tor's Study is devoted to questions
of the day. Dr. Hutchinson has his
regular monthly health article; Lit
erature and Book Reviews receive
special treatment, and the .Portfolio
is devoted to an amusing travesty
on "The Quick and the Dead." In
Timely Topics a plan for "The Uni
fication of America" is outlined.
Young Men's Democratic Club.
The Young Men's Democratic
Club held their regular business
meeting last night at Linder's Hall.
President Joseph Watters presided
and Secretary J. C. Morrison was at
his post.
On motion, it was decided to have
five hundred postal cards printed so
th Secretary can send them out
and notify the members ofthe Club
of all meetings and parades to'take
place. It was also decided to re"
quest the press of the city to aid in
giving more extended publicity of
the times and places of the meetings
of the clubtin order that the meeting
shall be as full as possible. In Wiis
connection a general invitation is
extended to young men to join the
Club, in order that Wilmington may
able to muster the largest Club in
the State.
Chief Marshal J. C. Morrison
made his report, showing that the
Club turned out 119 men when it
paraded on the occasion of the late
ratification meeting in this city.
A communicatidu was read from
the committee appointed at the late
Convention of Democratic Clubs at
Baltimore, urging upon the different
clubs in North Carolina to have full
representations at the convention
of the Democratic Clubs of the
State to be held at Morehead City
the latter part of this month. It
was decided to appoint a committee
of five to represent this club at the
convention, the members of, the
same to be appointed iater on. -
J. C. Morrison, who has heretofore
held the position of Secretary and
Chief Marshal tendered his resigna
tion as Secretary, for the reason
that his duties as Chief Marshal
will prevent him from performing
the duties of both offices at the
i same time, xne resignation was
accepted andDuBrutzCutlar, Jr., was
elected Secretary by acclamation.
The Club adjourned to meet at 8
o'clock Wednesday night next, when
very important business will be con-
Lsidered. 5
