The Elizabeth City Economist rises to remark: "Onr soldier boys have all returned, with the 'excep tion of a few that stopped off on the route to visit friends. A good time is reported and all are of the opinion that Wrightsville is the place for the encampment of the State Guard' At the Reach. Yesterday was one of the most de lightful days of the season at Caro lina Beach. Between 400 and 500 people visited the place and every one you met was loud in praise o its pleasantness. Quite a large num ber of bathers took advantage of the splendid condition of old ocean, while others remained at the hotel and enjoyed the delightful Southern breeze. Burglary. The residence of Col. Ji. It. Moore, solicitor of tue unminal court, on Red Cross, near Third street, was burtrlarized this mornintr between 2 and 3 o'clock. The thief entered Mr. Richard Chapman's bedroom. which is on the first floor, and took from his pants pocket a parse con tainiug the sum of $35. After taking the money he put the pocketbook back in- the pocket. Notfiing else was missed. There is no clue as to the thief. Firemen's Tournament. Arrangements for the firemen's tournament are so far assured that the necessary preparations for the event, which will take place on the 15th,, 16th ami 17th insts., will go forward now without delay. 1 lie committee on subscriptions have, met with a generous response from citizens and have raised eight hun dred dollars, and they are confident that the balance required to make the one thousand dollars necessary will be secured without doubt. The full committee will meet to night at the hall of the Hook and Ladder Company, when alLthe pre liminary arrangements will be per fected and " the programme pre pared. For the Yacht Race. For the benefit of those who may desire to witness the yacht race to" morrow afternoon, Mr. James H. Cbadbourn, Jr., the accommodating General Manager of the Seacoast R. RT, has changed the schedule of that road so that all may go and see the race and have plenty of time to get their dinner at home. The train which has heretofore been leaving Front street depot at 3 p. m. will to-morrow leave at :du p. m., arriving at the Hummocks in time to allow its passengers to see the be ginning, as well-as the ending, of j the race. Henry Benson, carrying conceal ed weapon, $10 and costs. Jane Benett, disorderly conduct, bound over to the next term of the Criminal Court in the sum of $50. The American Magazine. The Midsummer issue of the American Magazine abounds with interesting and timely literature. Dr. W. F. Hutchinson presents the fourth of his articles in the series "Along the Caribbean." Another entertaining paper is entitled "Where Burgoyne Surrendered,"' by C. H. Crandall. Frederick G. Schwatka tells about "The Ameri can Arctic Savage," and Trebor Ohl has "Six Story-Tellers for Children." Joel Benton has a poem on "Mid summer," and Sara F. Goodrich de scribes -""The Country in Midsum mer." Mary Agnes Tineker's novel, "Two Coronets," is continued. Ad ditional poems are "An Indian Love Song," "Frederick III. of Ger many," and "August." The short stories, which are particularly bright and suitable for hot weather, are a feature of the issue. The depart ments under the general caption of "Our Cabinet" are filled with useful and interesting matter. The Edi tor's Study is devoted to questions of the day. Dr. Hutchinson has his regular monthly health article; Lit erature and Book Reviews receive special treatment, and the .Portfolio is devoted to an amusing travesty on "The Quick and the Dead." In Timely Topics a plan for "The Uni fication of America" is outlined. Young Men's Democratic Club. The Young Men's Democratic Club held their regular business meeting last night at Linder's Hall. President Joseph Watters presided and Secretary J. C. Morrison was at his post. On motion, it was decided to have five hundred postal cards printed so th Secretary can send them out and notify the members ofthe Club of all meetings and parades to'take place. It was also decided to re" quest the press of the city to aid in giving more extended publicity of the times and places of the meetings of the clubtin order that the meeting shall be as full as possible. In Wiis connection a general invitation is extended to young men to join the Club, in order that Wilmington may able to muster the largest Club in the State. Chief Marshal J. C. Morrison made his report, showing that the Club turned out 119 men when it paraded on the occasion of the late ratification meeting in this city. A communicatidu was read from the committee appointed at the late Convention of Democratic Clubs at Baltimore, urging upon the different clubs in North Carolina to have full representations at the convention of the Democratic Clubs of the State to be held at Morehead City the latter part of this month. It was decided to appoint a committee of five to represent this club at the convention, the members of, the same to be appointed iater on. - J. C. Morrison, who has heretofore held the position of Secretary and Chief Marshal tendered his resigna tion as Secretary, for the reason that his duties as Chief Marshal will prevent him from performing the duties of both offices at the i same time, xne resignation was accepted andDuBrutzCutlar, Jr., was elected Secretary by acclamation. Brunswick Growth of cotton and corn has been considerably retard ed by cold and wet weather in spring; rice, only half crop planted, and that late; bugs destroying corn and potatoes: peanuts good; field peas full crop. Duplin Crops are improviug;may yet get an average; fruit in abun dance; rye in some sections, and fine; rice, full crop. New Hanover Corn badly injur ed by "chinch bugs" and worms; peaches, except in some localities near the sound, have dropped off; peanuts looking well; cabbage crop poorer than for years. Onslow Condition of corn good, but stand irregnlar; old corn need. ing rain; cotton regular in stand, but small, owing to rain and cold; cotton improving; oats fair; fruit sorry. Pender Crops generally good, except cotton poor stand and small; peaches full crop, but rotting very fast; sweet potato slips and sprouts scarce, causing small crop. Sampson All crops somewhat short of an average, by reason of too much rain in late spring; cotton and corn are not up to the average in size or acreage, but both are ini proying; rice, sorghum, sweet pota toes and field peas are good; fruit crop good; rain much needed. The Rowing Race. The rowing race of the Recreation Club will take place this afternoon at G. 45 o'clock,- the boats which are to take part in the contest assem bling at Market dock at half-past 6. The start will be made from Market street dock down the river to a buoy oppositeChurch street, thence up the river to a buoy opposite the New York steamer's wharf, thence down the river to the j starting point. There will be four boats in the race, of four oars each. The first boat, "Nettle," will be manned by W. R. Morrison, bowr oar; Willie Grant, No. 2;Joe Hooper, No. 3; Murray Grant, stroke; Edgar Hinton, coxswain. Second boat (no name;, Joe Smith, bow-oar; R. W. Wallace, No. 2; J. B. Willard, No. 3: H. A. Burr, stroke; W. N. Bowden, coxswain. The third boat (no name), will be manned by J. L. Keen, Chas, Harper, L. Burnett, Oscar Watson, and P. Heinesberger, Jr., coxswain. The fourth boat, "Pattie," will be manned by R. H. Cowan, bow-oar; Jno. Lewis, No. 2; Ed Munson, No. 3; Chas. Murphy, stroke, and a coxswain to be selected. Messrs. J. H. Boatwright and J.F. LeGrand will act as judges. While at work in his father's field, about three miles East of the city to-day, Mr. Wm.
