Since the assignment of the cadet graduates of the Military Academy seven vacancies iu the grade of sec ond lieutenant have occurred. If vacancies continue to occur at the same rate it will not be long before the twenty additional second lieu tenants will be assigned to com panies. The prospect for nou-epm-missioned officers is very encour aging. Eleven of them have passed departmental examinations and now await orders to report at Fort, ress Monroe for final examination. It ii evident that all of them, if they pass, will be in possession of com missions as second lieutenants be fore the beginning of next year. Prof. F. W. Cragin, of Washburn rCollege, discovered at Downs, Os borne County, Kansas, the petriGed remains of a huge fossil. Prof. Cragiu pronounces it the most re markable specimen found since 1877. He .thinks it belongs to either the ichthyosaurus or the mosasurus species, more probably the latter The animal complete was a little over sixteen feet iu longth. The jaws measure three feet eight inches, the neck is between four and five feet long, and. the body about nine feet long and three or four feet across. It had immense teth about three inches in length, aud each pair worked, independently of the rest, like pairs of hooked shears. The animal -was of so gigantic pro portions that it, would have been able to crush a Jhorse in its massive jaws and must have been king of the water. It had flinners auite similar to a seal, and its feet, two in number, Avere short. It is plain that it was an aquatic animal of the rep tilian age. Mr Christmas married the daughter o. Mrs. Gaines, the famous litigant, and in a dispute about the estate with William Whitney, a weak minded sOn of Mrs. Gaines by a for mer marriage, shot and killed Whit ney in self-defence. About four 1 years ago Mr. Gaines died. Since ; her death Mr. Christmas has had j chargeof the suit, which has now been pending fifty-three years. It j is thought the fatal termination of Mr. Christmas recent partial attack of paralysis was superinduced by the long mental strain and anxiety incident to his duties in connection with the case. Now, here is a little thing wh'ch gives out a whole volume of fact in a very small compass. It is a letter written to the New York Herald from Stanford, Conn., and signed 4 'Torn Wilson, late of Birmingham, England.1 It is pithy and to the point: There appears this week a cartoon representing numbeis of skilled English artisans rushing over to this country because of the higher wages paid them in different brandies of industry compared with those paid them at home. The ntcture is a grossly exaggerated one. Granted that artisans do come over here in hopes of bettering their condition, 1 am prepared to assert positively that in nine cases out of ten they find themselves, to use an English phrase, "taken in and done for." Fifteen or twenty doliars a - eek ap pears to any one living on 30s. or 2 a week a great catch, and so Eng lishmen pack up their things and emigrate to this country, only to find that here they have to pay four or five times as much for every thing as on the other side. One pound a week in England goes further than .$15 here. I speak from bitter experience. You have to pay for the poorest kind of board for yourself and wife $12. If you have children, of course everything is extra. Then clothing of every description is fouitiuies as expensive hero. In England a man can get a nice, comfortable house for 20 a year. You have to pay for the same here about $300, or i'0. A great deal is said about free trade just now. If we could only get it people with families would be far better otr 1 mean the working classes. This is a verv Hue countrv for the rich, but the poor are a great deal better off at home, where 1 am going as soon as I can save my pas sage money, and I know that there are thousands of others like me. Excuse this scribble, but I couldn't help writing to your splendid pa per, which is the most honest and fair toward people in my condition, and which .always speaks the truth. Vigor and Vitality Are quickly given to every part of the body by Hood's Sarsaparilla. That tired feeling is entirely over come. The blood is purified, enrich ed and vitalized, and carries heal'h instead of disease to every 'organ. The stomach is toned and strength ened, the appetite restored. The kidneys and liver are roused aud in vigorated. The brain is refreshed, the mind made clear and ready for work. Try it. - - -- - AUGUST ANTICS. The Wisconsin man who fasted fifty-three days has at last begun to eat. Perhaps he was a; last able to charge his boarding-house. Si Paul Globe. What's that? A woman can't keep a secret? Impurities in the blood produce diseases. t Bodily and menial health depend upon a healthy condition of the blood. The blood, particularly in (He spring and during the hot -summer months, becomes clogged with Im purities, which poison it and generate dis ease. A harmless blood purifier, without a particle of mineral poison in it, such as mer- -cury or potash, is necessary to remove these impurities and to restore the healthy tone of mind and body. The best purifier and tonic known to the world is Swift's Specific (3.S.S.V In regard to Its wonderful purifying and , tonic powers we give a few testimonials as " ' follows : Mr. Wm. A. Siebold, with Geo. P. Rowell & " Co., 10 Spruce Street, New York, writes March 29th, 1&83 : " I feel it my duty, for the benefit -of others who may be afflicted as I was, to . write you this letter, which you can use as . my testimony in any way you chopse. I will answer any inquiry from others in relation., to tho facts herewith stated. In February last I suffered great pain and inconvenience from boils, all over ray neck; I could not turn : my head without acute pain and my blood was in poor condition. After trying all tho usual remedies in such cases, and finding no relief, by the .persuasion of Mr. J. W. Fears Manager of your New York Office, I used one bottle S. S. s , and I improved rapidly and . very soon I was entirely relieved of my "Job's Comforters." Now not a sign of my affliction can bo sren. I feel strong and cheer-, ful. S. S. S. is a line tonic as proved In my case. I sleep soundly and iny appetite Is good. Dr. J. N. Cheney, a well-known physician " writes from Ellavillc, Georgia : ' I use S. S. S. in convalescent fever cases with the best re- . suits.
