The New York Star quotes Chair man Brice on the situation, in the interview had last Saturday, to which we briefly alluded iu yester day's issue: I am glad," he said, ''to be able to &tate that we have just received cheering reports from nearly every seetfon of jNew xorK, -New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Oh jo, Iowa and Michigan. - These reports relate to the desperate attempt which has been made by the Repub licans to create a defection in the Democratic ranks, especially . by means of the free trade scare. The Republicans seem to have asreed upon a determined onslaught in those States, . and they have tried every means of effecting their pur pose intrigues, pamplets, subsi dized newspapers and speakers. All our reports show that 5 they have ceased to ha'e any effect, and that the tide is now on the turn. They have done their worst, and our ranks are undisturbed. "Now we will begin operations, and we expect to make serious in roads upon the . Republican vote. Our letters from these States assure us that the Democratic rvorkingmen will steadfastly support the Demo cratic ticket and in addition will act as propagandists and induce their Republican fellow workingmen to act with them. "Ainongthe things to which al most all our correspondents advert is the great influence which the President's ' brave . and honest ad ministration of the National Gov ernment has had upon the plain people. The American people ad mire a courageous man a man who dares do what he believes to be right. The President, through his whole administration, has advoca ted! and promoted measures tending to the pronounced welfare of the whole country. His very person ality, therefore, has a powerful in- Huense upon the voters. The Na-i tional Committee find that thous ands of voters are going to support Mr. : Cleveland because they have confidence in his patriotism, based upon what he has done since he en tered the White House. , They say: He has made a good President, and we believe he will continue to make a good President.' This confidence in Mr. Cleveland exists to a wonder ful extent in the agricultural re gions of the great West, and will make itself felt oh election day. A Good. Appetite . Is essential to good health: but at this season it is often lost, owing to the poverty or impurity of the blood, derangement of the digestive organs, and the weaking effect of the changing season. : Hood's Sar saparilla is a wonderful medicine for creating and appetite, toning thos digestion an giving strength to the iwhola system.. .Now is the time to take it. Be sure to get Hood's Sarsapaniia. . , - - . J ln eYery WW and on every side, tlie outlook for the. Democratic par- ty is t bright oue. The indications now are that we will not only elect j' Cleveland and Thurman this '.'Pall : but that the Senate will also fall in j to our- hands?, t h us gi v ing us both j branches of the national legislature. I A Washington City special says: j In according with the usual cus tom, the Senate will be convened in i special session early next March, ! immediately ionowing -tne.expira-ition of , the present Congress, jtfo I matter bow the Presidential election I muv fckculr this sneeial jipssinn will : uw t x i visas be necessary, snouia PTeBident Cleveland be re-elected,' his Cabinet must be reappointed and should General Harrison win, the Senate frill be called together to assist him in organizing his administration. If the Republicans elect their Presi Tifintin.1 ticket thev will almost cer- tainlv control the Senate; it! they) lose tne I'resuiemiai election tney are likely to lose the Senate. At all events, the next Senate will be very nearly equally divided po litically. The terms of twenty-six Senators thirteen Democrats" and thirteen Republicans will expire on the 3d of next March. Of the- out going Democrats eleven are from Southern States, one from Dela ware, a State as reliably Democratic as anv in the South, and one from New Jersey. The latter is the only State that can be considered doubt ful in the list that must choose suc cessors to Democrats. Already the Democrats have grain ed one Senator from the.Repnbli cans. They have chosen Mr. Barbour to succeed Mr. Riddleberger from Vir ginia. Therefore, unless some unex pected and remarkable political rev olution should occur within the South between now and November, the Democrats are sure to hold their own in the next Senate. If they retain New Jersey, they will divide the Senate equally with the Republicans, assuming that the la.t ter suffer no further losses; and the political status of the States to choose successors to outgoing Re publicans makes it quite certain that they will remain faithful to present party ' affiliations, as the Southern States are to remain Dem ocratic. If, then. New' Jersey elects a Dem ocratic Legislature," the political control of the next Senate will prob iibiy depend upon the casting vote of the Vice-President of the United States. Of the Democratic Senators whose terms art now drawing to. a close, Messrs. Beck (Kv.), Gibson (La.), and' Walthall (Miss.) have been re-elected, and the indications are that Messrs. Berry, Saulsbury, Morgan, Colquitt, RausoHiJ Hutler, Coke and Kenna will be their own successors. Ih Consumption Incurable ? Road the following Mr. C. 11 Mor rU, N wark. Dnharifod DisQasQSo In the realm of disease the facts of 4 in- j hcritance are most numerous and are dally . accumulating. Hero, alas, they become ter- rible, fateful and overwhelming. No fact of ' nature Is more pregnant with awful mean- -Ing than the fact of the inheritance of ,. disease. It meets the physician on his daily , rounds, paralyzkig his art and filling him with dismay. The legend of the ; ancient 1 . Greeks pictures the Furies as pursuing . families from generation to generation, rendering them desolate. The Furies still , ply their work of terror and death, but they . are not now clothed in the garb of supenstl- tion, but appear in, the more Intelligible but no less awful form of hereditary disease. ; 'J Modern science, which has illuminated so many dark corners of nature, has shed a ' ; hew light on the ominous words of the ' Scriptures, "The sins of the fathers shall be --visited upon tbe children unto the third and fourth generation." Instances of hereditary disease abound. Fifty per cent, of cases of , consumption, that fearful destroyer of faml- -Ues, of cancer and scrofula, run in families . through Inheritance. Insanity Is hereditary . -In a marked degree, but, .fortunately, like , many other hereditary diseases, tends to wear itself out, the stock becoming extinct. -A distinguished scientist truly says : " No . organ or texture of the body is exempt from the chance of being the subject of hereditary disease."; Probably more chronic diseases, -which . permanently modify the structure) and functions of the body, are more or less ' liable, to be inherited. The important and far-reaching practical deductions from such facts affecting so powerfully the happiness of Individuals and families and the collective welfare of the nation are obvious to reflec ting minds, and the best means for prevent ing or curing these diseases is a subject of intense interest to all. Fortunately nature has provided a remedy, which experiences has attested as Infallible, and the remedy Is -tho world-famous Swift's Specific, a pure t vegetable compound nature's antidote for all blood poisons.
