There is a big yellow fever scare
all over the country. Even New
York is fearful that it may get there
and become epidemic. Every sea-
coast city is wisely taking precau
tions to guard against its introduc
tion. In a few days, however, the
smoke will clear away a little and
then we think that people will see
that there has been a reat deal of
unnecessary alarm. The fever is in
Jacksonville, and is epidemic there,
but it seems, after all, to be not so
virulent as has been apprehended.
Up to Saturday night there had
been but sixteen cases and only two
deaths. On Saturday there was no
death. The New York Herald spec
ial from Jacksonville says:
A meeting of citizens and repre
sentatlves of various city and coun
ty authorities was held this morn
ing in the. Board of Trade rooms, J.
W. Archibald, acting Mayor, in the
chair.
Mr. McQuaid, from the Committee
on Building for the Supernumerary
Hospital, reported progress and the
committee was continued.
Colonel Daniel, from the Commit
tee on Organization, . submitted a
draft of a constitution for the for
mation of the "Jacksonville Auxil
iary Sanitary Association," which
was approved. This organization
is to be voluntary, but permanent.
A temporary committee was ap
pointed to confer with the proper
authorities and put into practical
operation the concussion theory, as
propounded by Mrs. N. K. Ingram.
Attention was called by Whitfield
Walker to some of the garbage
dumping grounds, and Mr. Ken
nedy, of the Board of Health, said
he would look after it.
Mr. McQuaid also called attention
to the fact that while the panic
stricken citizens had mostly left the
city there was a large population
who could not leave, and that large
numbers of those were already out
of employment. Mr. McQuaid also
stated that it was rumored that all
saw mills would be shut down for
the season, that tkere were now no
local orders for lumber, &c, and
they could not ship lumber North,
as vessels of no kind could be in
duced to come to Jacksonville.
Colonel Daniels said this was a
matter he had been considering
seriously, and he hoped that it
would not be neeessary to pauper
ize the city by asking financial aid
from outside sources, and thus de
generate our citizens, and he trusted
that the city authorities would so
organize necessary sau'itary work to
be done that employment would be
given to all those idle men; and
further, that where possible employ
ers of laboters should continue to
keep their men engaged uutil the
trouble was over.
Dr. Neal Mitchell, president of
the Board of Health, -at 12 o'clock
to day stated r.ti-at there were three
new cases leported Since last night.
These were Mrs. W. T. McClelland
and Miss B. B. Buchanan, who are
ill at the Lafayette House, Forsyth
street, and Mrs. Scholield, who lives
at corner of ' Forsyth and Cedar.
Mrs. McClelland is in a very dan
gerous condition, and is not expect
ed to live. Since the above report
was obtained it is reported that
Mrs. Pino, wife of the fruit dealer
under the Times Union office, on
Bay street, has the fever. A little
boy named Vandergrift, who for
merlv was employed as a cash boy
in the store of John Furchfrott &
Co., is also reported to have it.
So far there have been no deaths,
and'all patients at the Sand Hills
are cheerful and doing well, so Dr.
Kenworthy reports.
City Health Officer Kenworthy, in
charge of the Sand Hill Hospital,
reports seven patients this morning,
but all doinc quite well. The Doc
tor has forcibly taken possession of
the Springfield public school build
ing for fumigating purposes. He
became tired, he says, trying to
take peaceable possession," and so
took it anyway.
Dr." Mitchell telephones officially:
"Henry Vesper, a tailor in Palmetto
Block; Gelder, a restaurant keeper
on Ocean street, and Mrs. Pino have
yellow fever. Miss Moore is not
dead, as reported."
All the places of business close at
p. m. now, and the streets are de
serted after sundown. To-night
numerous bonfires of tar barrels are
burning as disinfectants. Hundreds
left the city for Georgia and Ten
nessee mountains to-day. Most of
the panic stricken are now gone.
The citizens who remain hope to
check the progress of the fever by
vigorous measures.
The whole number of cases up to
8 p. m., 1G; no deaths to-day; whole
number of reported deaths so far, 2.
