Birthday Celebration.
Mr. N. Jacobi's elegant residence,
corner Third aud Mulberry streetr
was thrown ODen last night to wel
come a large number of friends o
the family, the -octtasion being the
birthday fete of the eldest son of the
house, Mr. Marcus W. Jacobi, who has
just attained his majority. It was
a notable event, and one long to be
remembered. The house and lawn
were beautifully illuminated and the
Italian harpers discoursed exquisite
music throuerhout the evening. Mrs,
Jacobi had prepared a delightfu
recast and to this the guests were
all summoned at about midnight
Mr. Marcus Jacobi was presented
with a number of beautiful and val
uable souvenirsby admiring friends.
His young male companions gave
him an elegant diamond ring and a
pair of opera glasses, and the young
ladies presented him with a gold
headed cane. Mr. Jacobi, his father,
srave him a unique diamond scarf
pin which has been in the family for
350 years, having been. handed down
during that long period to the eldest
son of the house.
The guests, lingered until a late,
or, rather, an early hour, and then
departed, one and all declaring that
it 'was one of the most delightful
evenings they had ever spent.

Yellow Fever Talk.
There is still much talk here now
of yellow fever, but there is no ex
citement. There was a report cur
rent last night that a case had been
found at Florence, but this proves
to have been false. Our people are
beginning to accept the fact in a
true spirit of philosophy. They see
that everything possible is being
done by the authorities to prevent
its introduction here and a feeling
of confidence is rapidly being de
veloped everywhere. The city now
is really cleaner than it has ever
been before, at any period of its his
tory, and this vigilance is to be kept
up and not relaxed. We can afford
to look with confidence to the fu
ture. City Court.
There was a small crowd assemb
led at the City Court this morning
and the following cases were dis
posed of:
Ran dol ph Tiech and MaggieTi ech ,
disorderly conduct, judgment sus
pended. Albert Evans, disorderly conduct,
$5 aud costs.
Mtckie Evans, disorderly conduct,
discharged..
Frank Williams, trespass, $5 or 10
days.
Judd Sanders, disorderly conduct,
$10 and costs or 20 days on chain
gang.
Samuel Petterson, disorderly con
duct, $10 or 20 days.
Henrietta Watson, disorderly con
duct, discharged.
The Mystery Co.
The entertainment given last
night at the Opera House by the
Steen-Rouclere Mystery Company
drew together a large audience but
one not as large as its merits justi
filed. It was said, by many to have
been the best that has been seen on
the boards of the'Opera House in a
twelve-month. There might have
been more merit in this claim had
the spiritualistic scene been given,
which was not done, instead of the
dog act, which, although very good
indeed, was not equal to the interest
felt iu the promised developments.
A committee, consisting of Capt. S.
W. Nobles, Alex. Heide, F. HSted
man, J. D. Smith, H. A. Kure and
DuBrutz Cutlar, Jr., were called to
the stage and these gentlemen ex
ercised a close scr utiny over every
thing done there but, it is needless
to say, made no startling discover
ies. Madam Steen is simply won
derful in her exhibition of mind
reading. It is inexplicable to us
We oniy Know mat, oiinatoiaea as
she sits on the stage, she displays a
most wouderful insight into things
which take place beyond her range
of vision, even were the bandage not
there. She. added up columns of
figures rapidly and accurately, with
her back turned to the black-board,
without seeing board or figures, and
as quick as thought would tell what
number or word any one was think
ing of. The date of one's birth was
written on a piece of paper, and she
not only told who wrote it, but also
crave the exact month and year in
which the person was born. ,
The other parts of the entertain
ment were also very fine. Messrs.
Rouclere and Nelsonia are splendid
jugglers and there is no exaggera
tion in the reports of their skill.
To-night will be the last of the
season here and there will be an en
tire change of programme, at which
will be given the celebrated blood
writing test, and spiritual manifes- j
tation without a cabinet: besides i
many other attractive pmzles, -
