T. Hunter, the other commissioners, or .any other Confederate; of good re pute." " , ' " '' " . V In the report in the New York Herald of Mr. Blaine1 speech at Hangor the other day it is stated that he said in speaking of trusts: "1 shall not venture 'to say that they are altogether advantageous or disadvantageous. They are large ly private alTairs, with which neither President Cleveland nor any private citizen has any particular right to interfere." '-- In this Mr. Blaine slipped up pret ty badly. These "trnsts" which the robber barons are getting up all over the country are peculiarly the' business of the people, the "private citizens" of this country, and it is also peculiarly the'business of the Chief Magistrate of these private citizens. ; The people, are the con-; sinners. It is they who foot the bills and these trusts are nothing but combines, or conspiracies, ..to.. make them pay more for an article than it would fetch in an open and compet itive market. Mr. Blaine is simply kicking against common sense and the "private citizens" in this coun try are not slow to see and realize. this fact. November will tell. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL: THEODORE W. DAVIDSON, Of Buncombe County. FOR SUPREME COURT JUDGES" JOSEPH J. DAVIS, Of Franklin County. JAMES E. SHEPHERD, Of Beaufort County. A. C. AVERY, Of Burke . County. - FOR ELECTORS AT LARGE: ALFRED M. WADDELL, of New Hanover County. FREDERICK. STRUDWICK. of Orange Country. FoTiCongress Cth District : ALFRED ROWLAND, I .Of Robeson. - For Elector Gth District: S. J. PEMBERTON, Of Stanlej'. The following bit of corrected his tory, in reference to the much ina licrned ex-President Davis, is from the Raleigh News and Observer: We are sorrv to see in the corres pondence of a contemporary the following about the Peace Proposi tions: "President Lincoln gave the Confederate government his pledge that he was willing for the South to return to the Union 22 statu quo ante bellum. When this assurance was carried to Mr. Davis he asked: 'Was any provision made for nie during this discussion?' 'Vour name was not mentioned at all,. Mr. President, was the answer. "Then,1 said Mr. Davis, 'the terms will never be ac cented.7""' .7 The inference from the above is that Mr. Davis made himself an im pediment in thev way of acceptint Mr.' Lincoln's terms. "No provision was made for me !" "Then the terms will never be accepted!" That is a miserable and unfounded asper sion of Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis ought to be so hear and dear to all South erners as to be exempt from such at tacks here in his own country. Let others defame him, not Southerners. Only a general acquaintance with history is necessary to show! the wantonness of this attack. It "was in January that the Hampton Roads Conference was proposed. No South ern man of prominence was then proposing "unconditional surren der." Mr. Lincoln's terms were un conditional surrender. No Confed erate recommended their accept ance. No respectable person 'will stand sponsor for the tale cthat Mr. Davis, early in Februar3 ' rejected the terms of "unconditional surren der" because no provision was made for himself. What was Mr. Stephens' purpose? He is quoted by his historian as saying, shortly after his return: "The object of the mission to For tress Monroe has never been under stood by the people. . It was to en deavor, if possible, to obtain an ar mistice. "Lincoln and Seward, of course, would not agree to consider any terms of truce which did .not recog nize a return of the Southern States to the Union. I urged an" armistice allowing the States to adjust them selves, as suited their interests. If it would be to their interest to reunite they" would do so; but that accord ing to the principles of State rights and State sovereignty, thev could not be compelled to do so." Mr. Stephens' idea was to propose that a convention should be held of all the States, North and South. His object was to unite our people and divide the North. "Hereafter the question of the fu ture relations of the States towards each other was to be left for adjust ment among themselves when the great principle of the sovereignty ultimate absolute sovereignty of each was first, acknowledged.- If it sbould be first settled bv the friends A Safe Invtnifiit.'
