Only two boats of the Recreation Clnb--the Little Joe and the Leona took yart inr the race yestenlay afternoon, the crew of the third boat the Nettle being unable to attend. , The race was an interest ing oue, howerwy and many specta- tors assembled on the river front to witness it. Harry Bo wdoin; stroke, and P. Heinsberger, Jr., coxswain. ' Pender Coanty Notes. C. B. Ay cock, Esq., Presidential Elector for this district, spoke at Burgaw yesterday. There was a large crowd present, considering the bad weather. He made a splendid speech and one that will do much good for the Democratic cause. He spoke at Rocky Point last night,and will speak at Sandy Run, in Grant township, to-day and at Point Cas well to-morrow. - Pender County Superior Court meets at Burgaw next Monday. As the docket is very light it will be a short term. Fears are entertained as to the crops in the vicinity of Burgaw, They are having too much rain and as a consequence the crops are dam aged to some extent. The people of Pender are certain ly on their good behavior. The jai had not had an inmate since the last term of court. v " ' ! ? Independent Republicans. The Senatorial Convention ot New Hanover and Pender counties, rep resenting the "Independent Repub licans," met yesterday in the office of George W. Price in this. city. He was a member of the Legislature from Pender county for two or three sessions, and is said to be very popular with the Republi- cans of his county. . W. F. Campbell and Mr. Alex. . CampbeU of Fayette ville, and Megsrs K. . rant, Simon, Sanders, Andrew J. Flanner and W. A. Bryan of this city. Mr. Grant and Mr. Bryan made the best scores. The visitors and everybody else spent a pleasant evening and had lots of fun. There will be a fishing frolic a the . Hummocks this afternoon; a drum fish, line to be awarded as a prixe tothe most lucky fisherman. In the evening there will be a skat ing festival at. the pavilion. The many friends of ; Mr. E. G. Whitney will regret to hear that his wife - and three daughters, Misses Annie M., Florence H. and May, are down with hjejjowf ever in Jack sonville. VMr.Whitney1s a sister of Messrs. Jas. B. and Geo. W. Huggins and also of Mrs.; Samuel Howland, Mrs. D.G. . White, Mrs. S. G. Hall, and Miss AllieHuuggins, all of this city. Mr. Jas. B. Hug gins is in constant communication with Mr. Whitney and received a telegram from him at 7 o'clock last evening which stated that all were doing well. . Whitney. v We deeply sympathize with Mr Whitney. Five members ot his family are now down with the fever and one, Miss Florence, is very sick. We hop to 'be able, to state that they are all better to-morrow. Gala Week Association. A meeting of the Gal Week As sociation was held at the Ortoh yes terday,; - ' Mr. Enslow, of Charleston, ad dressed the meeting and referred to the benefit the gala week of 1887 had been to that city. Committees were' called on for re ports. They reported very little progress, but all stated that they were ready to go to work. Mr. W. H. Chadbourn, Chairman of the Fi- no.CpTOtnittee, stated that from what "he had learned, he thought the sum of $2,000 could be raised. It was decided not to change the date for the gala week already fixed. Mr. W. H. Chadboura, , Chairman Fi nance ; Committee, requested the Qhairmen of the different commit tees to hand in by Monday next es timates of the amounts they think necessary for their several depart ments. On motion of Mr. Sebrell the chairmen and members of the different committees were reqnested to meet the chairman of the finance committee at The Orton next Mon: day at U a, m.
