We j 8tamlard ot democratic principles, wbald iy though that estiiuatea ! This would indeed The colored Democrats are to have j be a revolution but stranger thiugs a big torchlight procession in New -have "happened and will happen York. This is something new, even J again, as witness the 192,000 ma for Gotham. It is said that there ijority for Cleveland for Governor of win nor ue less man i,aw eoloretl voters in line on that occasion. The big new steamer City of New York four days overdue, has ar rived at New York. The delay was caused by various mishaps to her machinery and fears for her safety had been expressed in New York. President Cleveland has very neat ly nailed a campaign lie. In an ar ticle in the North American Review he'is charged with saying this: "I believe in free trade as I believe in the Protestant religion." Mr. Cleve land says, politely but emphatically, thatjt is "a pure, unadulterated fabrication. v -- A new fad goes into operation in New York to-day. Passengers are to be carried to Albany on 'Father Columbia's" steamboat line for 10 cents each. The usual fare is $2. Meals will be furnished continuous ly onjthe boat and those who want to eat can pay $1 per day and eat as much.and as often as they please. The projectors say there is money in it. The way the rats desert the sink ing ship is a caution. Strange as it may appear it is likely that Rosooe Conkling, were he alive now, would repudiate the Chicago ticket. This is plainly intimated. Hon. George C. Gorham, an old line Republican, was one of Mr. Conkling's most inti mate friends. In an interview with a New York Herald reporter he de clared most unequivocally against the Republican ticket and in favor Qf Grayer Cleveland. The Roanoke river is on a big tear the biggest sort of a big tear and the destruction to property in Hali fax and Northampton counties in this State will be very great. A telegram rn the New York Star from Norfolk says: Passengers arriving in the city on trains from North Carolina bring the information that the rivers kaye overflowed their banks and covered the surrounding country with water for miles. The oanoRe riyer lias risen thirty-seven feet over high water mark, flooding Northampton and Halifax counties and doing im mense damage. v The entire corn and cotton crops in the lowlands iu the vicinity of the river are de stroyed. Houses are loose and are being tossed aboHt in the water, and it is feared that many lives have bee.n lost. In some f the corn fields the water is twenty feet above the top of the corn. : The country is flooded a distance of three miles from the river, and in man v places the tree tops alone give evidence of the existence of land.- Cattle have. been drowned and many carcasses are floating around. The people living in the vQjn,Hy of the flood are pauio-srickeu'antf many of them homeless. The -damage to crops is estimated at from $400,000 to $500,000. This afternoon the river is falling, and there is a more hopeful feeling among tlie teopie. l rains nave been delayed, but as all bridges in that section are of 'stone'and iron, none fyii been washed away -- -r---- - The New York Herald gives " veiit to the true inwardness of the recent Maine election and thoroughly dis" sects Mr. Blaine's midnishtSV1?. wnerein lie romantically qeciares that it was1 4'nqt simply a great vic tory; it is almost a revolution." The New York Times says: Sam ples of cotton cloth bagging were exhibitecTon the tables of the Cot ton Exchange yesterday, and tffough a few persons thought it was likely to be more inflammable than jute bagging? the majority commented very favorably upon it. The objec tion as to inflammability can be re moved, it is thought, by dipping it in some solution. The insurance underwriters have agreed to insure it, and it is thought by members qf tbe Exchange that the Board of Managers will pass fayorabjy wpon the new cloth at theft next meeting. The cjh hsLs, been subjected to compression by the use of hooks and declared to be fully as strong as jute. The material used in its man ufacture is the cheapest cotton, thus reducing the price to less than that ordinarily charged fer jute bagging. DIED.
