UNDER DEMOCRATIC RULE The State debt was settled. The effect upon , the State was great. Capital, which had shunned the State during the evil days of Repub lican ascendency, once more sought and seeks investment here. The debt for the North Carolina Railroad was settled. The State has regained .control of the road aod the sums paid for its lease. It will not be many years before the rents will have xwiid the debt, and will contribute almost money- enough probably quite enough to pay the expenses of the State government: The Western North Carolina Rail road was rescued from final ruin. It is now in operation far beyond the Blue Ridge. -One.braneh has reach ed the Tennessee Jine atPaintRock; another is rapidly nearing the same line at a point far to the south of Paint Rock. " The Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Road was at its last gasp. It stretches now from Bennettsville-to Mt. Airy. Its mileage - is 2SG miles, reaching from the extreme southeast to the extreme northwest, and passing through one of the finest couutries on the globe. The Atlantic & t North Carolina Railroad is increasing in importance and value, and as a part of the line connecting the East and the West, has a great future before it. Many other roads have been built, foreign capital largely embarked in them as the result of confidence re stored. We note the Milton & Suth erlin, Franklinton & Louisburg, the Clinton & Warsaw, the Warrenton Railroad, the Oxford & Henderson, the Halifax & Scotland Neck, the Norfolk Southern, the ' WilHamston & Tarboro, theWasnington & James ville, the Goldsboro & Smithfleld, Moncure to Pittsboro, Murphy Rail road, the University Railroad, the Chester & Lenoir N. Cx., Wilson . to Fayettville,l Uocky Mount to Nash ville, the Spartanburg & Asheville, the Wadesboro & Cheraw (the ex tension of the Carolina Central), the Cranberry Mine Road, the Quaker Bridge Road, the road from Hamlet to' Gibson's Store, that from Ham let to Cheraw, the Clinton & War saw, the Little Rock & Alma, the! a . I Bladen, Columbus & Florida, that from Bogue to Waccamaw, the Dan ville, Mocksville & Southwestern, and the Wilmington, Chadbonru &r Conwayboro, and in contemplation, from Durham to Lynchburg, th Taylorsville extension, the Onslow County Road, the Carthage Road, the Durham & Northern, the road from Oxford to Clarksville, VaM &c, &c. ! ' Our Eastern watefways have be come not only sources of the great est benefit to our own people, but of national importance. Our asylums are of the best and best managed in the Union. . .The public school system was a farce and the people held it in con tempt. The improvements that we see every day around us, in men, man ners and materiaf affairs; had their rise and have made their progress under Democratic rule. - Will it be wise, then will it be prudent for us to change that rule? Let conservative, thinking men throughout the State consider this question well. The election is approaching and the people will soon - be ' asked to turn over the Legislature ; to the Radical party, and elect men from that party to the offices to be filled. A wise people will make no change in the political complexion of their government unless substantial rea sons demand it. Can any such rei son be urged now? Will" a ; Radical Legislature give us better laws than we now have? Are the Radical can didates better men than the Demo cratic candidates? Does any public interest of any kind call -ror a change? , Would it not be rasii to make any change when our people are enjoying 6ach a large measure of prosperityand happiness? But again, does the business in terest of any private cltizendemaud such a change? Every man lives by his business; from it he supports. his family, educates his children and makes provisiori for establishing them in life.. Would his business be promoted in any way by giving the government into the hands of the Radical party? If not, he would do gross injustice to biinself,- to his family and society which must suf ter if lie ana they sutler by giving his vote for or doing any act to bring.about a changed These are questions involving con siderations which must be con trolling ones with all sensible men. The decision rests with the voters of the State. What the Radical party did, and the Democratic party has done and is uow doing, has been laid before them. m- Merit Win We desire to say to -our citizens, that for years we have been selling Dr. King s iNew Discovery for Con sumption, Dr. King'sNew Life Pills, Bucklen's Arnica Salve and Electric Bitters, and have never handled remedies that sell as well, or that have given such universal satisfac tion. We do not hesitate to guaran tee them every time, and we stand readv to refund the purchase price, if satisfactory results do not folio w their use. These remedies have won their great popularity : purely on their merits. Wm. H. Green & Co., Druggists. An exchange speaks or" a child luaving 'a gash bitten in its leg by a dog four inches long."
