When you fish for drum fish in the surf don't wrap the line around your body,, nor 1 yet around your arm. Man y y ears tigo a man tried the for mer and booked a flsli too big for him to land which dragged him into the water and drowned" him. He had a knife in his pocket but the line was wound so tightly around him that-he could not get it out. We have heard of this as happening at either Masonboro or Myrtle Grove ound, we forget, which Anoter instatice of a. somewhat similar; nature is recalled. Some years before the.- war a young nian about 17 or 18 yeai-s of ager from Topsail Sound, was lookiiie: for stone crabs, on low water. The usual manner of catching these is to thrust ' the hand and arm into the hole and pull the crab out. As the crab goes into the hole claws fore most it leaves itself without defence from the rear. The young man (whose name- we have heard, but have forgotten) was in this instance caught by the crab, which had in some way enlarged the hole and was thus enabled to turn . and meet the attack and hold himjin that position with his arm drawn in up to the shoulder, and held him there until the tide came in and drowned him. This mav seem to our readers as a ratner fishy fish story but it is said to be authentic. We havejheard it a num ber of times and simply give it as it reached us. But We understand that there are parties now living Vho will vouch for its correctness. At all events it will serve to point, a moral if not to adorn a fish's tail. The liecord of 83 Years. . In ancient days the phunny phel- low who naiiea irom somewnere in tho interior and lived on pine knots for breakfast, pokeberry greens for dinner and corncobs for supper, and who' carried around widii hini a dough face that plainly bespoke the exeimg. insalubrity : or ins own- dunghill, was wont to provoke a laugh at jnilitia musters by alluding r Wiltnl nfff rvn nc 4n oo m70 '1 The fact that graveyards are not necessarily unhealthy places foi dead people does not seem to have ever penetrated that part of his an atomy where he rarely carried brains enough in his head to balance the every-day vacuum in his belly. Well, we used to have billious fe ver in Wilmington 'the old fash ioned sort that would take a man up bodily on a pinnacle of pain and rack every joint and sinew but which was not often at least not al ways fatal and would generally re lease its grip in a few days. Then we had occasionally a touch of typhoid and in later years scariet fever, and meningetis and the dread ed diphtheria, and occasionally some body would get consumption and drop out of the ranks, but now these things have: gone, almost out of sight and since the days when it has become so 'much the fashion to adul terate almost every article of food rheamatisin racks the joints and neuralgia the nerves, with occa sionally a case or. two of t remittent or intermittent fever to add a little zest to existence when the, patient has reco vered and help the doctors and druggists to "obtain an honest livelihood. : .- But the old graveyard business is no w .busted and Wilmington to-day can show a cleaner, healthier record among its white population than probably any other town or city in the South. . It is a. fct that so far this month, and up to this date, the 29th day of September, there has been but one interment in , Oakdale Cemetery, i And that one interment was of a , ' , , , , , , - , body brought here from elsewhere iu rtuvi c en. w o-wic iu tJi cocin j Sunday School at 5 p. ra. the facts in fisrnres. thanks tn Mr. ! DKPrithard de livered the second of .the ' series of Iecturesv regarding his recent trip to Europe., His talk last night (for it was more of a " conversation than anything else) embraced incidents. connected with the' Conference to which he was a delegate, the dis tinguished persons he met there, the immense amount of -work per formed and a brief review of the d i ff erence between . -, Jingl ish and American orators, much to the ad vantage of the latter. Besides these he spoke of the ? places-'of interest that he. visited and what he saw there. Among these were the his toric tower of London, where Sir Walter Raleigh Mary, Scots, and many other persons were beheaded; a shudder looked upon Queen of illustrious and, with the head- man's axe and the fatal block where so many lives were sacrificed. He also visited the several parks and museums of the great city, his dis cription of which wasintersting and instructive. He also saw Billings gate, but said but little of what he saw and heard there. His account of the preaching of Rev. Mr. Spurgeon was deeply interesting and instructive. The learned doctor certainly kept his eyes .and ears open while in London, . much to the :- profit and gratification Of those who have heard the two lectures he has given. We regret that space will not per mit us ; to. giv-taP more extended notice of his admirable effort, for it was deeply interesting from begin ning to eqd, ' " ' r JNext Friday night he will speak at the same place upon Naples and other parts of Italy and especially of the ruins of Pompeii, and we hope there may be a crowded house as the subject is interesting, and'upon sucu memes uoctor .rritcnara is a most entertainiug and instructive speaker. All In. , X ; . Mr. S. H. Fishblate, the King Clothier, has his Fall stock ready for inspection He always purchases early so as to obtain the choice styles.
