At that time 1 gave some at tention to literature and art matters, although, to tell the truth,' I was so nearly dead from malaria that at times I could scarcely hold up my head. It seemed to me that I would never te ahle to do business again or take any real interest In life, and so, to make a long story ehort, I returned to America. The day I lan ' ed In New York, a friend Invited me to his home o dinner. He saw my wretched condition, and ' eclared that he had something he was cer tain would positively cure It. More to please my friend than anything else, I took some cf his remedy, and to my surprise I slept well that night. You can well Imagine that I continued to take It the next day, and In brief, "within one month from that time I was entirely cured ol malaria In Its worst form, wholly by the use of Tintrvs Pure Malt Whiskey no quinine, no drugs. During all this time I was encouraged to continue its uso by my wife, who Is a Arm believer in temperance, as Indeed I am myself, 2nd, In fact, my wile purchased it by the dozen for me. When I recovered I felt like a new man. tLi( i have persuaded numbers of my friends to try the same means ror restoring meir neaim. and tha results have Invariably been valuable." Mr. schllcht Is a gentleman whose word Is above Question, and the statement he makes xhould crave a valuable suggestion to all suf ferers from malaria. MISCELLANEOUS. For the year endinc: June 30, 1888, that is, the last fiscal year, thev took from the people $379,000,000, which is $100,000,000 more than ten years ago, and there is no use ror that except to buy bonds at a pre mium. A queer sort of reduction that is. But let us look a little further in to this so-called reduction. In 1868 the income tax was laid on all in comes greater than $1,000. All un der $1,000 were entirely exempt. Out of a population of 400,000,000 only 250,000 people paid an income tax and 'these had incomes aggre gating f 800,000,000. These men hail incomes averaging more than $3,000 each, and yet when all the people, amounting to 40,000,000, were borne down by the enormous taxation, the Republican party, instead of reliev ing them, struck "off the income tax from these 250,000, some of whose in comes were so enormous that the entire average was $3,000. In 1870 the exemption was increased to $2,000; but that did not satisfy the Republicans. They wiped out the entire income tax the next vear. Was this done in the interest of the great masses of the people? The tax on incomes of $5,000 and over yieided in 1886 $34,500,000, and yet that tax was allowed to go. But taxes were continued on clothing,cn salt, on necessaries of all kinds, even on matcnesl The poor were taxed to death; the rich rolling in their S5,000 incomes were let off. We repeat that Jhe taxes r.ow are more than they were even in 1865 apd lbbG, if we allow for the depre ciation 01 tne currency. The people paid last year $379,000,000 in luonev as good as gold. In 1867 they paid but 4376,000,000; and in 1868 but $357,000,000, and gold was not then par. And - yet Colonel Dockerv " -' 3j sept. I0th,:oct. 15. Harnett Feb. eth, Aug. 6th, Nov. 26th.
