THOMAS DKVEREUX.
(Raleigh Chronicle.)
Th most thoroughly self-answered
man in the present campaign is
Thomas P. Devereaux, the Radical
candidate for Attorney General. Mr.
Devereaux is not a Radical of the
old school. He was not reared a
Radical. When he first came to
manhood he was a Democrat, and
continued a Democrat until he as
certained that the Democrats would
give him no political preferment,
and would not commit to his hands
the leadership of his party. Then
in the great never-to-be-forgotten
farce entitled "The Grand Liberal
and Anti Prohibition Tragedy," Mr.
Devereaux ran against Gen. Cox as
the Liberal candidate for Congress.
It was during that campaign that
George Lane, a'colored politician,
vouched for Mr. Devereux, and gave
as bis reason for supporting him: "I
am in favor of Mr. Devereaux for
Congress because he has got a NE
GRO'S FEELINGS with Liberal
principles."
Thus inducted into the Radical
party, with George Lane as his po
litical god-father, Mr. Devereux has
been a Radical of Radicals, and no
man has surpassed him in abuse and
wanton slander of honest Demo
crats. In other campaigns he has
given himself in a measure over to
slander and misrepresentation, but
it remained for the. campaign of 188S
for him to go to the lowest depths
and be told by Judge Fowlo that he
was a LIAR 'AND A SCOUNDREL. So
far as the Democrats are concerned,
the slanders which Mr. Devereux
scatters and rehashes on' . the stump
do them good and good only. The
people know Judge Fo ivle and Don
ald Bain, and they know them to be.
honorable men. They also, happi
ly, have learned T. P. Devereaux,
and his attempt to throw disgrace
upon the names of two patriotic and
honest men falls upon ears that do
not heed. The pe6ple have learned
not to believe Tom Devereaux..
The false charge that he takes
greate&t pleasure in making is that
Fowle is a bribe-taker and a dishon
est man that he NOW has $30,000
or $40,000 in his pocket in addition
to the $16,000 he returned. That is
the charge he is making in Western
North-Carolina. Every day Capt.
Kitchin reads the people a letter
from Judge Fowle which is as. fol
lows: "If any man charges me with cor
ruption or the SLIGHTEST IMPRO
PRIETY in regard to the special tax
bonds HE is A LIAR AND A
SCOUNDREL."
This is equivalent to saying: ''Mr.
Devereaux: You are A LIAR AND
A SCOUNDREL." Everybody who
knows Judge Fowle will bear testi
mony that he is the most courteous
of men and that he does not use
such language except upon the great
est provocation. With all men who
know Judge Fowle, a simple denial
of the slander of Devereaux would
be sufficient. To those who may
not know him, he makes the denial
strong and vigorous. Mr. Devereaux
is answered.
Bat he is better answered by an
appeal to his own" record. In 1880
he was a Democrat That year wit
nessed the great contest between
Judge Fowle and Governor Jarvis
for the gubernatorial nomination.
Mrv Devereaux advocated Judge
Fowle's nomination. H is own words
written in soberness the.n complete-
ly refute his present campaign plan
der. During the Contest for the
nrt.nin'itirm it will be remembered
nom inai ion, it wi u oe reine.m oereu,
the papers were full of charges and
counter-charges against each of the
distinguished ; aspirants. In April
of that year Mr. uevereaur repliea
to the charge that Judge Powle was
guilt v of impropriety in
rerartl to
the Special Tax Bond transaction.
What did he say then? He wrote
the following letter to John Gray
Bynum,.Esq., of Morganton: ?
KALEIGH, JN. U., April 18, lt5U.
Dear Gray: The last issue of the
Made contained a communication
from 'Thomas', which Judge Fowle's
friends here thought should be an
swered at once. Speaking for them
I enclose a repl5' which we think
should as a 'matter of policy ema
nate from the Piedmont region.
Piease give this matter your best at-.
tention. Who is Thomas? If he
continues toiling his slime, we will
open on him in a way not pleasant
lo Jarvis. Things look well here
and hereabouts. Write to us.
Yours truly, . ,-;
T. P. Devereaux."
The following is the letter Mr.
Devereaux wrote in defense of Judge
Fowle. If it was true then, it is
true to-day. Mr. Devereaux proba
bly did not think that his own writ
ten words would rise up to confound
him, now that he has gone into the
misrepresentation business. But so
it is. This is his letter: '
"JUDGE FOWLE. '
Mr. Editor: A writer
in your
Thomas'
exercised
be so far
paper caning nimseli
seems to be very much'
that Judge Fowle should
ahead in the Gubernatorial race and
therefore attacks him in a way in
dicative neither of a good heart nor
a sound understanding. When we
saw the signature our mind insensi
bly turned to the joke which atov.
Vance used with such force, about
a great deal of walking being 'ahead
of vou. Thomas.7 Thomas asKs:
'What about the hundred thousand
of special tax bonds which Judge
Fowle received from the ring?
Now., Thomas, you ought to be
sufficiently well informed to know
that .Judge Fowlo never received.
one iiuu.ired tnousanu uouars in
bonds or otherwise from the ring
The truth is. after the passage of
chapter 7,1a ws 1368-'C9, better known
as the Omnibus bill, attempting to
validate the special tax bonds and
for which Gov. Jarvis voted in the
Leg i si at ure. Judge Fowle, with other
attorneys, was employed to test the
constitutionality of ttie act. He re
ceived, as a contingent fee, 12i of
the special tax bonds, bis partner,
R. C. Badger, Esq., receiving a like
number. There were 14 millions in
bonds involved in the suit. As
Thomas is seeking information, we
will tell him that in addition to the
bonds spoken of above, Judge Fowle
received as a retainer $500, and
$3,500 in cash as his contingent fee.
xnd his partner received the same.
Would any lawyer of decent stand
ing demand a less tee in a case in
volving so large an amount? In re
gard to the' 'Wilmington affair, we
notice that in another column of
the same issue of your paper, you
say tnat iew Hanover lias gone ad
verse to Gov. Jarvis, and you might
lave said tor Fowle. What is this
'Wilming'on affair?' We would like
o know. It seems to heip the Judge
imazinglv. He must have had a
similar affair in Granville.
In regard to the Swepson matter,
hings have come to a- pretty pass
when an attempt is made to de
nounce an attorney for appearing
or a man charged with crime.
Judge Fowle was employed in this
cause after the death of Gov. Bragg,
who had been Swepson's counsel up
to that time. He (Judge Fowle) has
now as his associates 'in '''this' case
Judge Thomas Ruffin, Hon. A. S.
Merrimou, Hon. Joseph J. Davis,
C. M. Cooke and others. Does this
allay your itch for knowledge, Tom
my t If it doesn't let us know and
we will attempt to aid vou further
n your commendable undertaking.
So far. Judge Fowle and his friends
lave studiously avoided descending
o personalities in this contest.
They consider it wanting in that
true delicacy which should always
mark the hicrh-toned irentleman.
But there is a point beyond which
orbearance ceases to be a virtue,
and for the benefit of all inauiring
Thomases or Tommies, we close this
etter with a quotation JPoint de
