The Seventh-day Adventist of
Minnesota have organized a confer
ence school in Minneapolis, the rules
and regulations of which are rather
interesting. Nobody who uses pro
fane or unbecoming language, who
uses tobacco or intoxicating liquors
or is iu any way immoral will be ad
mitted. Manna'', training is to be
one of the features, and tent mak
ing is mentioned as a very pleasant
as well as useful employment to be
taught. It is also the plan to have
the general domestic work of the
school done by the students, and the
work embraces dining room, kitchen
and laundry work, sawing and split
ting wood, &c. Aside from the or
dinary branches, physiology, civil
government and algebra are named
in connection with missionary and
Sabbath School work, as a part oj
the course. Another somewhat novel
feature is that the young men,
among other things, are required to
provide themselves with flannel or
colored shirts and with celluloid
collars and cuffs, as linen shirts,
cuffs, &c, will not be laundered at
the school. Such a programme is
not very alluring to the average
young man or woman, but sixtv of
them are going to make a trial of it.
The fibre of the ramie plant ex
ceeds in strength that of cotton, flax
or other vegetable substances used
in the textile industries. It is also
of a lustre nearly equalling silk.
The difficulty of separating the fibre
from the woody substance of the
plant, and from the resinous matter
iu which it is imbedded, has hereto
fore prevented the use of ramie for
the purposes to which it is adapted.
The London limes speaks hope
fullj of experiments made with a
machine invented by a gentleman
in Belfast for the purpose of prepar
ing flax for the spinners as likely to
be of equal use in separating the
fibre of the ramie plant from adher
ing substances. The French Gov
ernment has offered a prize of 6,000
francs for any process that may
produce the fibre in quantity of
proper quality for commercial use,
and the Indian Government has a
standing offer of $25,000 for a ma
chine that may accomplish the same
purpose. A machine is to be pur
posely constructed to send to India
to make an experiment upon the
ramie grow in that country. If an
India substitute for cotton could be
discovered, John Bull would con
sider his everlasting fortune made.
A SAD STORY,
--The child coughed. The mother
ran. No remedy was near. Before
morning the poor little sufferer was
dead. Moral: Always keep ' Dr.
Acker's English Remedy at hand.
UrmcLs Bros., druggists.
! Mr. Stanley nimseir may Dequoieti
in snpporir of the theory that the
' Nile can be diverted from its course
j with comparatively little effort: In
i the course of conversation with Col.
j Colborne in Cairo on the eve of his
! departure for Zanzibar he described
' the Victoria Lake as lying on a
i plateau Pke an inverted basin. It
! could be made to trickle over at any
j point,'1 he exclaimed. The King of
Uganda, he continued, might take it
j into his head any morning to turn
j off the Nile by ordering a thousand
natives to drop stones across the
Ripon Falls until they were blocked.
As the channel is narrow, this could
easily be done by such a force in
nine months, and the population Of
Egypt would be starved. He did
not suxpose that King Mtesa would
ever entertain such a project mere"
ly for the sake of creating trouble
in the lower Nile countries, but con
sidered it possible for him to block
up the outlet of the lake in order to
water tracts of land adjacent to it.
The possession of Khartoum by the
English, it is clear, would not pre
vent such a catastrophe as this. In
order to secure Egypt against the
loss of the fertilizing inundations,
the whole course of the river from
the junction of the Blue Nile to the
sources of the While Nile would
have to be controlled.

Rich Hill, Mo., July 7, 188S The Swift
Specific Co., Atianta, Ga. Gentlemen: Our
Httlft crlrl when but three weeks old broke
out with eczema. We tried the prescriptions 3
rrom several gooa- aocrors, dug witnouc any
special benefit. We tried S. S. 8., and by the
time one bottle was gone her head began to
heal, and by the time she had taken six
bottles she was completely cured. Now she V-
has a full and heavy head of hair a robust,
hearty child. I feel it but my duty to make
this statement. Respectfully, II. T. Shobe.
Chattanooga, Tenn., June 27. 1888 The
Swift Specific Co., Atlanta, Ga. Gentleman :
In 1886 1 contracted blood poison, and at once
sought a physician, who treated me for sev
eral months. By his advice I went to Crab
Orchard Springs, Ky., where his course of
treatment was carefully observed. I recov
ered, as I thought, but the next spring pta
t)les began to appear on my face and body.
These gradually increased to sores and run
nine ulcers. I was advised to try S. S. S.. and
immediately after taking It I commenced to
imnrove. slowly at first, but more rapidly
afterwards, and soon nothing remained to
tell of my trouble. My blood 13 now thor
oughly cleansed, and my system free from
taint, and I owe my present condition a
perfect cure to your medicine. I cheerfully
give this statement that others who have
suffered as I have may reap the same benefit.

Homer. La May 25, 1888 The Swift Specific
Co., Atlanta, Ga. Gentlemen : About two
years ago my general health gave way en
tirely. I was so debilitated that I almost
despaired of ever feeling well again. All
that the physicians done for me brought no
permanent relief. Friends Insisted that I
should give S. S. S. a fair trial, although I
thought it would be throwing away money.
After taking a thorough course, my health
and strength returned, and I must say that
S. S. S. alone cured me, as I discarded all
others while using it. As a tonic I can most
heartily recommend it ; for general debility,
it certainly is a specific. WF. Bridges, J. P.
Ho meb. La. I know Mr. W. F. Bridges, and
will say that his statement is correct.
