it was shown thaf the profits for the
past year have fallen off to the ex
tent of $150,000. The prolits of the
roulette tables, after paying all ex
penses, amount, to over a million
and a quarter dollars; but this, it
seems, is considered a very poor
business. The Trente et Quarante
has also proved unprofitable to the
Casino 'during the past year, and
another table will lie abolished this
winter. The number of suicides is '
shown to have decreased fronitwen"
ty-five to nineteen. The latest vic
tim is a young Russian lady, who
lost all her fortune last week, aud
then.in despair, threw herself into
the sea.
The Western papers speak of a
man taking his private car and skip
ping for a journey of two or three
hundred miles, as though it were a
matter of e very-day occurrence.
Such, indeed, is the fact. Private
cars in Chicago are almost as com
mon as yachts in New York. Every
man, from the attorney of a railroad
down through the boundless ramifi
cations of its'management until the
clerks are readied, controls
tne
movements of a private car to a
greater or less degree. A Chicago
railroad attorney will step into his
own car and take a run down to
Milwaukee in the most matter-of-
fact manner in the world. It never
occurs to him that he is doing an un
usual thing, and yet to a New York
er tne performance seems cased
upon wealth in unrivalled magni
tude.
It has become fashionable to pa
trol the East African coast to pre
vent slave dhows from continuing
the export of slaves. For inanyjvrars
England has been performing this
function alone. Now, however,that
an agreement has been made be
tween England and Germany, where
by the latter is . to assist in the
work, the other Powers are offering
ships, and the dhows promise to
have a hard time of
it. France,
and Greece
now in the
Italy, Austria, Russia
all want to take part

The following is a communication
in the Charleston News and Courier.
It seems to us that it hits the nail
squarely on the head:
The sentiments of "A Prominent
Democrat," published in the News
and Courier some days ago, have
created somewhat of a sensation
throughout the country. There may
be a few Democrats who think as
this one does, but a very few. The
idea of ever being so foolish as to
accept the assurance of the Repub
lican party on any matter touching
the right of the Southern States to
manage their own affairs! You
might just as well trust a cat in the
kitchen with fresh meat. It would
come as near leaving the meat alone
as the Republican party would the
Southern States. For God's sake,
Southern Democrats, don't be fool
ed into any arrangements or ever
trust the Republican party as a
friend to the South.
Hear how they arer talking now:
"We fought them this time as we
did in 1803 and 18G4." "We will show
Cleveland or any other President
what the result will be if they ever
attempt to .place iu power the
Southern Democracy." "I fought
to preset ve the Union; what right
had Grover Cleveland (I voted for
him iu 1881) to put L. Q. C. Lamar
on the Supreme Bench, a Secession
ist, and all the other Southern Gen
erals iu prominent positions?" "It
was Cleveland's appointments of
Rebels to high places ami turning
the Government over to the Rebel
South that made me vote against i
Iiiiu this time." "I vas always a
Democrat. I fought in the Union
army to unite this country, ;and I
voted for Cleveland in 1884, but not
this time. Four more years, and
the South would have had full con -trol
of the Government."
. These and many other such ex
pressions fall from the lips of North
ern Democrats,and show verv plain
ly how they feel toward the'South.
It was the old war feeling that beat
Cleveland and not the tariff. The
Northern Democracy did not like
his way of doing. His sympathy
for the South was too much for
them. A Northern Democrat shot
full of holes with Confederate bul
lets may have a slight friendlv feel
ing for a Southern Democrat, but
he lias no wish to see him in no war.
The amount of affection the Repub
lican party has for the South will
be demonstrated in the next four
years to the everlasting satisfaction
of any gullible Southern Democrat.
Let no Southern man sav au?ht
against Cleveland. God bless him!

One Fact
Is worth a column of rhetoric, said
an American statesman. It is a fact,
established by the testimony of
thousands of people, that Hood's
Sarsaparilla does 'jure scrofula, salt
rheum and other diseases or affec
tions arising from impure state or
low condition of the blood. It also
overcomes that tired feeling.creates
a good appetite and gives strength
to every part of the system. Try it.
Unworthy offspring brag the most
of their unworthy descent.
HOW DOCTORS CONQUER DEATH.
Doctor Walter K. Hammond says:
"After a long experience I have
come to the conclusion that two
thirds of all deaths from coughs,
pneumonia and consumption might
be avoided if Dr. Acker's English
Remedy for Consumption were only
carefully used in time." This won
derful Remedy is sold under a posi
