Pine .Straw for Ever! Pine straw matting will run cocoa out of the country some of these days. It is used extensively in all of the Southern States ttnd the News and Observer tells us that "Clerk C. These depredations are becoming frequent of late but some of these days or rather nights the rascals will run against a snag and then a charge of buckshop will wipe out old scores, as well as new ones. Fire in the Country. The three-story frame dwelling house, owned and occupied by Mr. Cannon, on Town Creek, in Bruns wick county, some ten miles from Wilmington, was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon about 3 o'clock. The fire is supposed to hq.ve been caused by sparks from the chimney falling on the roof, and had made such progress before it was disco v ered that only part of the furniture could be saved. It is said that there was insurance on the building to the amount of $1,200. Prof. Burk's Equine College. The North Carolina Confederate soldiers who received severe wounds in the late war and are receiving pensions from this State propose holding a convention in the city of Raleigh on or about the 22d of Jan uary next. The railway officials have kindly consented to give three delegates from each county free transportation. The News and Ob server, in recording this fact, very truly says: It should not only be. the duty but the pleasure of every one to aid those nien. who suffered for a cause that " we ali thought right. .Their numbers are growing less year by year, and ere long we will not have any of the One-legged and one arm ed" soldier boys' who" followed Lee and Jackson. We hope that $ people will not only ma'ke, their-stay pleasant while in city, but aid them in securing a larger pension from our State, We are able to give these men more than eight or ten dollars Per year. Now, Who is the I.iar? We have received a comiuunica tion from Wm. H. Cullingworth, who signs himself Postmaster at Rich mond, Va., in reply to our strictures of a few days since, relative to the delay in delivery in Richmond of both letter and newspaper mail. Mr. Cullingworth is very wrathv audi lets his anger outrun his discretion. He charges us with lia deliberate falsehood" in saying that ''letter mail is kept on hand a full day,v &c, Now, let us see who is the liar. The Daily Ukvikw of Monday, Novem ber 12th, left here on the midnight train, at 12:0o a. m. The train gets to Richmond about 7 o'clock in the morning and yet Monday's Rkvikw was not delivered in Richmond un til Wednesday morning. This was not, by any meaus, an isolated in stance. We returned to this citv from Richmond at '9:53 on Wednes day night and mailed a postal be fore 10:30 the same night for Rich mond, which, undoubtedly, left here on the midnight train and was not delivered until Friday morning. These are facts beyond dispute and Mr. Cullingworth will find it troublesome t encounter them. We think that we have establish ed our case, but. if M Cullingworth is not satisfied we will refer it to headquarters at Washington City and see what they will say about it there. As to the language of the letter, the charge of "deliberate falsehood, " &e., safely made at such long taw, that is a matter for private adjust ment if it shall ever be our lot to meet Mr. Cullingworth face to face. North Carolina Day at Augusta. The management at the National Exposition at Augusta, Ga., has ap pointed Thursday, December Gth, as 'NorthCarolinaDay.v They have ex tended an invitation to all the peo ple of our State to visit their eicy at that time, that they may see the wonderful Expo&ition of Southern industries alid Northern machinery that have been concentrated in the immense building they have erect ed, and a.t the same time that the people of the two States may meet socially, and confer together upon questiousof vital interest to all. From vU we have been able to gather from our exchanges, wg have eome to the conclusion that the exposi tion at Atlanta, covers a larger area of industries, and shows better what the whole South is doing, and what it will be able to do in the future than heretofore held. We learn also that the different railroad com panies have made such liberal ar rangements for special days as will enable everyone of our readers to visi Augusta at a lower cost than they could ever have done in the past, orthat there is any probability of their being able to do after the exposition closes. We are gratified to know the management has invit ed Senators Vance and Ransom, j Hon. Alfred M. Waddell, and other i distiuguised citizens to go to Aligns-- j ta at that time and to address the! throngs assembled there. We hope j that everyone of, our readers who nan liv nnv rihilitv mak , j - trip will do so, for the very best ex hibit that North Carolina can make, j anywhere is an exhibit of its own sturdy, intelligent a.nd patrioitc ; citizens. ; ilmiiiRto IUtrict, Methodist E.
