Ex-Giov. W. W. ilolden is again on the ragged edge. He has ad dressed an open letter to the mem bers of the next legislature calling on them to remove his disabilities. He wants, he says, justice, demands that the legislature shall say in ef fect that his error was of judgment and not of purpose. In jther words, this legislature is to brand as infa mous that" which found him guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. The Georgia Legislature has taken advanced action in the cause of education. The appropriation bills as reported bv the committee on yays and means contained the fol lowing items: School of technology $18,000, branch college at Dahlonega $3,000, branch college at Milledge ville $2,000, branch college atThom ville $2,000. The committee did even more, which was to insert in the general appropriation bill $1G5, 000 for common school purposes "in 1889, and $330,000 for common school purposes in 1800. Frank Stockton's new novel may deprive President Harrison of two ( 'abinet positions to give away if it is published soon enough. In a sup poised war bet-veen Great Britain and this country the United States lets out its lighting to the highest bidder, with such happy results that even the vanquished party we as sume that the author makes the for eigner the loser unites in a vote of thanks to the syndicate that did our lighting for us. The story is to be published serially in Coliier's Once a Week, in instalments long enough not to keep the readers in undue suspense. But if the country ac cepts the plan there will be no need of a Secretary of War or of theNavy. Does Once a 'Week propose to knock out the administration before it is formed? X. V. Herald, Dec. 9, 1888 This wonderful story by Frank R, Stockton, the author of ''The Lady or the Tiger,1 "Rudder Grange," "The Late Mrs, Null," "The Casting Away of Mrs. Leeks and Mrs. Ale shine," etc,, etc., commences in No! 9 of Collier's Once a Week, out Dec. 15, illustrated by Matt Morgan. If the young men who call to see their girls these long winter even ings, do not wish to be met on the steps wfth the words, "Miss Laura is sick with a cold, and can't be seen,' they would better keep her well supplied with Dr! There are several hundred hands, here to day, trom the Georgia tur pentine farms, en route to their homes, and the trading they have done here has added considerably to the sum of the day's transactions. We congratulate our good friend, Mr. Jas. H. Chadbourn, Jr., Gen eral Manager of the Seacoast Rail road. It is a boy, born this morn ing, and a tine Christmas present it is. The wind got around to the West last night and it blew some right big guns during the night. This morning s the sun arose it was in the same quarter and to day it has been clear and cool. Silver-plated knives, forks, spoons, and child's sets, carving knives and forks. Make your friends happy by making useful presents. A nice line of the above is offered by the N. Jacobi Hdw. Co. t The Herald. The New York Herald stands to day where it has stood for so many years, at the head of the ladder. It is the greatest and best newspaper in the world, unapproachable and unassailable. There are many who have aspired to climb to its dizzy height and taking a place there but the attempt has not yet succeeded. It goes forth to the world as the eloquent exemplar of American in dustry, enterprise, pluck and ingenu itv. Personal. Ex Sheriff W. J. Sutton, of Bladen county, is in the city to-day. Mr. Norwood Huske returned to the city this morning from Florida. Mr. Robert London, First Lieu tenant in the Fifth U. S. Cavalry, is here on a visit tp h.i3 father, Mr, Mauger London, accompanied by his wife and child. Mr. London was quite sick last Summer but is now rapidly recovering his usual health. He will remain here during the holi days. Audit and Finance. The Board of Audit and Finance met yesterday afternoon in regular session. Mr. R. J. Jones, chairman, and Messrs. W. I. Gore, WU. Calder and J. F. Maunder were present. Bills weye audited and approved as follows: For current expenses, $669.07; refunded taxes, $366, notes in bank, $33,000; interest, $386.13; bonds, $3,GQQ; amount due sinking fund from tax collections, $489.7?. It was expected that an effort would be made to induce the Board to reconsider its action at a previous meeting, when it was decided not to concur in the recommendation of ih1 Bonn! of AMermen to purchase the old truck of Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 for the city; but im mediately after the Board had dis posed of the routine business before it, Mr. Gor moved to adjourn. The cautionary signal, which watf displayed all of yesterday and last night, was ordered down this morning. There is a very handsome line of Christinas goods on display at the Ladies Emporium, 115Market street, as advertised in this issue. There are all kinds of pretty things there, just suitable for the holiday season, and they will t all be sold at low prices. 'All are invited to call and examine the goods. r Mrfll tissey is Doing Well. Mr. Zach Hussey, whose leg was broken yesterday by the falling of the flag pole at the wigwamis do ing very nicely to day. He was not taken to the Hospital, as we stated, but was carried to his home, on Castle, between Fourth and Fifth streets. The broken leg was set by Dr. W. J. H. Bellamy, assisted by Mr. Jos. H. Hanby. The Last of Earth. The remains of Mr. Gibson Regis ter were interred yesterday after noon in Bellevue Cemetery. There was a large attendance, Fifth Street Church having been thronged to its utmost capacity. The Sunday School children attended in a body and the members of Stonewall Lodge No. 1, K. of P., some 75 strong, escorted the remains to the grave. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. K. Bell, C. H. Ganzer, W. H. Hardie, T. T. Seeders, Jno. L. Dudley and J. E. Wilkinson. Take Time by the Forelock. Parties who may intend to ship Christmas packages by express to friends at distant points are urged not to put off doing so until the last moment, There is always a big rush of business in the Express office here just before Christmas and it is wise and better to take time by the fore lock and leave some margin. Arti cles shipped now need not be deliv ered, untiL Christmas Day, although they will be forwarded at once. They can be held at the point of destination and delivered bright and early on the morning of that day. Concord Chapter. Lizzie Currie, disorderly conduct, case transferred to Justice John Cowan. Robt. Saunders, larceny, case con tinued. A Rumor Rejected. A rumor having gained circulation here to the effect that officer Tur lington, of the Police Force, had been suspended from duty for a violation of the police regulations in having been under the influence of liquor, we are requested to state that the report is utterly un true. He was suspended but the suspension was for "using language unbecoming an officer.'' Death of Mrs. Otterbourg. The venerable Mrs. Helena Otter bourg, mother of Mi s. George Hon net and grandmother of Mrs. S. C. Weill, died at Mr. Honnet's resi dence, in this city, yesterday, in the 78th year of her age. She had many dear friends here and in Fayette ville who will grieve to learn of her death. The funeral services will take place to-morrow, from Mr. Honnet's residence, on South Front street, and the interment will be in Oak dale. A "Woman's Scheme. Miss Mamie L. Hatchett, of Hea derson, this State, was here yester day. She visited the city in behalf of her paper, the Southern Woman, and her visit reminds us of a letter from her published iu the New York World some days ago, wherein she boldly outlines a plan for the re modeling of the government of "this degenerate republic. It is, in brief, the abolition of the Senate, a coun -cil of one from each State, to hold office for life or gaod behavior, to name the President from one of their number, the council to remain permanently at Washington City as an advisory board to the executive. There is considerable boldness and originality in the proposed plan and it is attracting attention. DIED.
