If our venerable townsman, Mr. George R. French, lives until Jan uary he will be 87 years of age. He is still hale and hearty and was on the streets to day. He has been in business in this city, at the head of the large shoe house which bears his name, for GG years, and he ranks to-day as the oldest merchant in the State of North Carolina. He has recently returned from a visit to Massachusetts. It was the 71st time that he had made the trip bet ween Fall River and Wilmington, and it has always been with him a safe, commodious and comfortable trip, without accident of any kind. Mr. French has been a consistent Christ ian since his early manhood. His connection with the Baptist Charch. in this city antedates our earliest , i,ecQllgtioQ&-li&-lv-'! g. aa for many others past, he delights himself in doing good; in quietly and unostentatiously dispensing of his wealth to those in need. These facts were gathered by us to-day indirectly. They were not intended for publication but when we heard them we could not forbear this tribute to the sterling worth and Christian integrity of one who has been in and out among us for nearly three-fourths of a century and who possesses, in the highest degree, the respect and esteem and confidence of the entire community. Terminal Facilities. It was made known yesterday af ternoon that Col. J. A. Grey, Presi dent of the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. and Capt.J. W.Frey, the Superintendent who had been in the city during the day, had completed the purchase from Mr. Win; Larkins of thirty acres of land Jon Point Peter, op posite the city, with a front of 1,600 feet on Northeast river, and 700 feet on the Cape Fear, forfive thousand dollars. The company has also bought what is known as the Nutt wharf property on Water and Mul berry streets, next to the wharf of the New "iork and Wilmington Steamship Company, which has a front of 130 feet on North Water street and a depth of over 300 feet. This purchase was on terms that have not been made public, .; but the "price is believed to be in the neighborhood of twenty. thousand dollars. These pieces of property were bought to provide terminal facilities for the company. The terminus of the road will be on the West side of the Northeast river, where the passenger and freight depot will be erected, and a steam ferry boat will be used to transport passengers, mails and freight to and from the city. Warehouses' and offices will be built on this side 01 the river, on the Nutt property, as soon as practicable, and neat, com modious buildings will be construct ed, which will add considerably to the appearance of that portion of the city. . The literary exercises of the pupils of the Cane Fear Actidemv took place at the school room on Fourth street, near Princess, last night. - There was "a large attendance of those interested in the progress of the students at this excellent school and it was a decided literary gather ing. The exercises Were very inter esting and in the highest degree creditable to the careful and-pains. taking principal and his assistants It was hot an examination, such as those held at the close of the session, but a literary entertainment of a high order,-such as the pupils of the Academy give occasionally during the winter months. . . ','hristmas for Everybody. . We cannot altogether endorse the views of our correspondent, publish ed elsewhere, in regard to the obser vance of Christmas Day. We be lieve that all of tftose whose church es arc opened ought to go to morning service on that day but, this duty performed, we believe also that all of the latitude consistent with the public comfort, and safety ought to be allowed for enjoyment. It has not been so long yet sirtce we were a boy that we can forget the great pleasure with which this - holiday, the greatest of the year, lias been hailed, and we believe that the most should be made of it. Christmas without candle crackers and tin horns would be about as tame an affair as a Christmas dinner without roast turkey and mince pies. .N EW ADVEBT1SEMKNTH. OPERA HOUSE.
