Following is a synopsis of the
beautiful little juvenile operetta
'King Winter's Court," which is to
be presented at the St. Jolm'sSchool
House on Wednesday night:
King Winter s Court opens with a
proposal from the King to the mem
bers of his court, "to decide what
we shall do to make mankind happy
this Christmas tide." He tells them
that- everywhere the gifts of King
Winter are exnected and asks what
they will do to help in this noble
yant. All promise to lend their aid
'in largest Christmas measure,'1
and call in song, for Joy, fcveet
Hope, Love and Mirth, who enter
with theJChristmas tree, and tell
the sweet story, of the long ago
Mirth suggests that the King will
call in the help of Old Santa Clans
who has for ages been the joy of the
little folks. Old Santa enters the
Court, and agrees readily unto
King Winter's proposal, promising
to do all in his power for the hap
piness of mankind and fcthe little
folks in particular.
Scene 2nd discloses a sitting room
with several children chatting and
writing letters to Santa Claus. while
stockings are hung round the chiui-.
ney with care, r hopes tha St.
Nicholas soon . would be .there.
Dream Fairy and attendants enter4
and with their magic, wands, trans
fer the drowsy children to the Court
of Slumberland. Meantime St. Nick
comes in, ladenwith toys, and fills
the stockings, while the unconscious
children dream the sweet illusion . of
innocent, happy childhood.
Scene 3d. The little ones are wide
awake and dancing- around tne
Christmas tree. ' In comes jolly. St.
Nick, joins the merry gronp in their
sport and after giving presents to
each,- he invites them to go with
him to the Courts of King Winter
and Slumberland. After a welcome
song to the little strangers and win
ter's regalia placed upon them, mak
ing them members of King Winter's
Court, a final chorus of thanksgiving
totho"Kind Father vjhc hast hlost"

vThe observation 'of (Ihristiuas'as'a
festival is weJl nighuniversal among
allof the" Christian nations. In
the United States within the mem
ory of a generation, itha come into
much prominence, so that all have
come to celebrate it both in its re
ligious and social aspects.
The general manner of its observ
ance in America is the result- of the
blending of the customs of the vari
ous European nations. The insti
tution of the Christmas tree, the
giving.of presents, and the legends
of St. Nicholas, Kriss Jirinkle, or
Santa Klaus, together with the
hanging of the stockings on Christ
mas Eve, and other attendant cere
monies associated with these legends,
we derive from the Germans and
Dutch, among Avhose descendants in
the New World these customs long
existed before they were incorpor
ated in their present modified form
in the general manners of the com
mnnity. The custom of the Christ
mas dinner is an" inheritance fr'om
Old England, as are many of the
games, sperts and pastimes in the
line of public and private entertain
ments that are common at this sea
son. -The European customs in con:
neetion with Christmas are readily
traced back to old Roman, Saxon .
Druidic.al, or qth.er religious and so
cial ceremonials of "the ancient an
cestry. Thus the English customs
in regard to the, mistletoe and the
yule log are survivals of old British
rites practiced by the Druids, and
the boisterous fun and license allow"
ed inmahy of the continental Euro
pean countries in connection with
the Christmas holidays have been
claimed by scholars to be directly
descended from the Roman Satur
nalia, or those of ancient German
and Norse mythologies.
No matter what may be the opin
ions of individual critics as to the
sj'mbolic and commemorative char
acter of Christmas as a religions hol
iday, the factuthat it has come to
represent beneficence, good will,
helpfulness, sympathjvand a host of
social virtues, which are inculcated
in a very vital manner by the cus
loins of the da v. has t;rnfel to dis'
