Crystal &prings,Miss., has within the past tljree years be come.the most important point for the shipment of vegetables in the South, and last year ajlarge canning factory was established there. . The shipments of fruits .and vegetables from the principal local, stations -on the Illinois Central Railroad be tween New Orleans and Canton, Miss., for 1888 aggregated 58,22o tons, being an increase of 26,707 tons, or 85 per cent., compared with the pre vious yeui " .- . i The commissioners for the revis ion of the excise law in New York have been wrestling with the ques iion of opening the liquor stores on apart of Sunday, or closing them altogether. There were three prop ositions before the commission on the subject: One to permit saloons in cities to be opened from 12 to 5 p. m. on Sundays, with the consent of the mayor and council; an r ameru" mcnt that the new law should re affirm the provision in the present law, that the saloons should bekept closed during the whol of Sunday; and a substitute that the sale of beer should be permitted for one hour on Sundays from 12 to 1 p. m. through an aperture not to be drunk on the premises. The latter proposition was offered by the Rev. Dr. Howard Crosby who said he had some con - J sideration for the German element; who -were accustomed to drink beer with their dinners, and he was wil ling to 'make some provision for their , comfort. . The discussion on these propositions was vigorousand at times heated, and the result, of the vote- was that they were all negatived. It was then voted three to. two that, all saloons be kept closed on Sunday, and that the sale and disposition of intoxicating liquors on that day be not permit ted. The commissioners agreed that the section of the rules providing for the closing of liquor stores on ;eWc tion day should read so as to require the places to be closed only while the polls are open. .
