Grand Master Robinson Caned.
A special to the- Dally Review,
from Mr. James W. Monroe, of this
city, now in Raleigh in attendance
on the meeting of the Grand Lodge,
tells us that Mr. Charles H. Robin
son, the retiring Grand Master, was
presented to-day with a handsome
gold-headed cane by the members
of the Grand Lodge. The presenta-
tion address was made by Hon. A.
M. Waddell in his usual pleasant
manner and was happily responded
to by Mr. Robinson. Mr, Monroe
says thatthe Wilmington delegation
will be home to-night.

Chief
Ruler of the Rechabites,
during his
visit to bur office a few days
ago
commented very handsomely upon
the general good order and sobriety
of our people. He remarked that
he found very little drunkenness
here, having seen not more than one
or two intoxicated persons, either
among the white or colored popula
tion. He thought that ours was the
most orderly and vyell conducted
community he had found anywhere
in his travels. This is a high com
pliment to our people, but it is one
which is not bv anv means unde
served. A gentleman who has dealt
in intoxicating liquors for years past
told us some weeks fgo that in his
opinion the consumption of whiskey'
had fallen off four-fifths in ten years
As the consumption of whiskey
has decreased, "however, that of beer
has increased. ! For five years past
the sales of beer have averaged
an increase of 25 per cent, each
vear over tue previous vear. Tins is
a fact, gathered from the records of
the sales here during that period,
and it shows that beer is rapidly
taking the jilace of spirituous
liquors as a beverage and fa stimu"
lant. Now, though beer is really an
intoxicant, yet the old toper can
hardly hold enough of it down to
make mm urunK ana as a conse
quence, while he may be pretty full
of beer he can yet keep his legs. It
is in this way that we account, to., a
certain extent, at all events, for the
undeniable fact that the people of
Wilmington are as steady ana ors
derly a community as can be found
in the entire country. But we do
not denv that Mayor Fowler'-s ".$20
or 30 days" has- had a very good
effect oh the unruly portions of the
community.
The lullic Schools. '
At the annual meeting of the
Board of Education held yesterday
afternoon, the Treasurer's annual
report was submitted andapproved,
for the fiscal year ending Nov, 30,
1888; showing receipts from all
souces amounting to $23,487.87, and
disbursements for the white race
$7,870.35; colored "race," '$6,646.98;
other expenditures $1,263. Unbalance
on hand, $8,708.43.
The report ofrthe Superintendent
of PublicInstruction,WalkerMeares.
Esq., showed a total number of pu
pils enrolled in the public schools-
whites 972; colored 1,653. Average
attendance 632 whites, 820 colored.
The number of. children of school
age in the county is: Whites males
1,261, females 1,404 total 2,665: col
ored males 2,130, females 2,252
total 4,382. School houses white 13;
colored 14; value, $37,000. Number
of teachers, white males, 8; females
29; coloredmales, 22; females, 16.
Total, 75. - In submitting his annual
report the Superintendent. Kays:
"Another year's . experience
strengthens the opinion heretofore
expressed, that the studies pursued
under our system of public schools
should be confined to the rudiments.
I am fully persuaded that a thor
ough grounding in reading, writ
tng, antnmetic ana geograpny,
will accomplish more for the
common goud than, attempting
advanced studies, which, under the
fuost favorable- circumstances, can
be in the. reach of but few. , t is
impossible to keep the bpys at our
schools for a longer time than is nec
essary to acquire a thorough ground
ing in these rudiments. The tempta
tion to earn a few. dollars per month
is too strong to be resisted, especial
ly when the boy finds out that by
doing this hegets beyond the. can-
trol of hisparents. i there - be ex
ceptions iff our "schools, such pupils
will, through ambition, in time find
their way to the many academies
and colleges in. which our State
abounds. He should keep steadily
in vie' that the, Stat public school
is for the benefit of the many, not
the few. The , teachers selected,
should be well educiie.dt dignified,
of at least fifood personal appear
ance, and well -qualified to readily
and quickly Impart what they know.
I am of the opinion that in this di
rection there has been great pro
gress in New Hanorer."- ,.;. '
Joint Meeting and Installation. '
The joint meeting of Stonewall j
Lodge No. 1 and Germania Lodge
No. 4, Knights of Pythias, held last
night ut Castle Hall, was largely
attended by the members of the? or
der. It jwis held for the purpose, of
formally welcoming to the city Gen.
William .Ward, of New Jersey, Su-
j preme CJhrjncellor of the order. He
was gi veh a very hearty greeting.
The Supreme Chancellor made a
short, address, which was followed
! by speeches from Grand Vice Chan
cellpr Laiubreth, Grand Ghaneullor
T. D. Meares and Supreme Repre
sentative Bonitz. After this the
loors to the banquet rooms adjoin
ing tnej louge were thrown open,
where a collrttion was spread, with
a most teiupting display of every
thing that could please the palate.
. Everything passed off most pleas
antly, and all who were present en
joyed the occasion to the fullest ex
tent."
A very pleasing incident of the oc
casion was tne presentation or a
beautiful dressed cake to the Su
preme Chancellor. The presenta
tion was made by Mr. J. W. King,
most appropriately, andreceived by
the Chancellor most feelingly.
A special train was chartered by
the lodge on the Seacoast R. R. and
to-day Wen. ward was taken tor a
i
ride down to the coast, accompanied
by a large delegation of members
from the two lodges, The train left
here at 10:30 and returned this after
noon. Wrightsville and the Hum
mocks were, both visited and the dis
tinguished guest was given an op
portunitv of sampling some of the
famous Myrtle Grove oysters.
To-night the officers of both lodges
will be iinstalled in1 public at the
Opera House, on which occasion the
public .are invited to ' attend. We
