Birmingham. Ala, is about to en large its corporate limits by taking ! u the suburbs and several thousand i of the suburban population. A bill j will be present! to .,e Legis.at. of Alabama authorizing this exten i sion. Birmingham has had pheno- mena. growth. Founded only a lit- j tie more than fifteen years ago, it now has a population of between 30,000 and 40,000, and is growing more rapidly now than at any time during its brief history. Virgtmrt will elect a governor next November and Col. Charlsa T.O'Fer rall, of Harrisonburg, now a repre sentative in Congress, and Col. Wil liam Lamb, of Norfolk, are being groomed for the race. Both of these gentlemen were gallant-Confederates but (VFerral stood to his prin ciples and Lamb apostacized. The result in the State at the election last fall was very close only 1,541 Democratic majority and the fierht next fall will be a warm one. It is just as we said. Belle JBoyd and Belle Starr were two different and distinct people. The New York World made them as one, but now corrects its error. Belle Boyd was in Wilmington during the war, and sailed from this port in one of the blockade runners, but she didn't bring her horse with her (unless it was a clothes horse) nor did she swing him up in her cabin. We were here at the titue but failed to wit ness any of those equestrian dis plays. If she went abroad as an ac credited agent of the government nobody here knew, of it. The correspondence on the Sa moan question between the govern ments of Germany and the United States seems to indicate that Prince Bismarck has been playing with a high, imperious hand indeed, and a hand which is evidently beginning to lose its cunning. The German Chancellor cannot for one moment imagine that America is to be insult ed with impunity. Prince Bismarck no doubts thinks that the Yankee will not dare to take his own part, knowing, as he must do, that the German fleet can steam to Sandy Hook iii ten davs and shell all the towns along the coast from New York to New Orleans: but mavhan it does not enter even intb the de caying old man's calculations that the tie of blood which binds these islands to Columbia would never Fermit a German fleet so to operate, t is just as well to inform him of this fact, but if he doubts it let him instruct his secret agents over here and there are plenty to ask a casual hundred of Englishmen the question. He will find at least 90 , per cent, would unhesitatingly reply ; that before the Kron Prinz could rain its iron shower on Broadway i tbeBenbow and the Inflexible would I have first to be beneath the waves ;of the Atlantic St. Stephen's ' Rc- vicio, London. This is richness. We are very i much obliged, and all that sort of : thing, don't cher know, but at the i same time we are slightly embar rassed. Give us a chance, at all events, to fight our own battles first, and then, if we get worsted in the eucouuter, (which we do not antici pate,) our- good friend's gunboats might be railed into play ' "s-j ge cannot wither it nor custom stale it iuftnits variety1 Flesh is hardly heir to an aerie or pain which cannot be cqred by using Salvation Oil. An entertainment will be given next Fridav evening at the Ortorf House, by the "King's Daughters," v . , the proeeeds to be devoted to a charitable purpose. The North Carolina Board of Phtirinacy are in session , to day at Raleigh for the examination of can didates for license to practice phar macy. Capt. Frank L. Meares is the only one in attendance from this city. Mr. John D. Bellamy, Jr., has ap pointed the following gentlemen to constitute the LegislativeCommittee of the Chamber of Industry, viz: Messrs, W. A. French, P. L. Bridg ers, J. M. Forshee, J. A. Bonitz, N. Jacobi, Hugh McRae. Something Remarkable. A colored man by the name of Rice, who lives on Chestnut street, between Eighth and Ninth, and who is totally blind, has about completed a shad skiff, all of the work on which has been done by himself. The lines are said to be perfect and the work done as well and as correctly as if the sense of sight, and not that of feeling alone, had guided his hands in shaping the boat. For tbe Golden Gate. Dr. W. H. tfreen and Mr. Iredell Meares will lea veto-morrow nightfor SanFtancisco on business connected with the estate of the late Charles Flanner, who died recently, iqtess- tipely on business will yet manage, j we presume, to find a few days fori sight seeing. E. D. Hall be; j made one of the railroad commits- j sionera. There isn't a better man in j the State than Col. Hall and his i I fiends will all endorse the view's of j the correspondent. j St. Vdlentme's Day will dawn to ' morrow, and the mails to-night will j be loaded down with he soft and silly effusions. A singular curiosity was exhibited to-day at Capt. Jas. B. Huggins1 store, on Market street. It is a sec tion of an ailanthus, or "Paradise1" tree, which was cut down yesterday in front of his residence", on Dock street, whUfh has embedded in it a complete iron horse shoe. This shoe was found fully five inches from the outer surface of the tree and near it, also embedded in the wood, was a staple and the snap of a check rein. The discovery was made when the man, who was at work on it, struck his axe into the wrought iron horse shoe, making a cut in it a quarter of an inch deep. In all probability the shoe was nailed upon the tree many years ago, as . u0irUauUW) has since oecome emoeuueu iu me wood by the growth of the tree. A Bold Burglary. The residence of Capt. John F.'j Divirfe, bnj Mulberry street, near Pourthr was entered last night by a burglar. The rascal got in by en tering the kitchen, which is on the basenient, and forcing the door of the kitchen he got into the dining room and from this room ascended to the upper floor. He entered Capt. Di vine's room and took his clothing out into the entry, where he l-ified the pockets, securing a small amount of money only bat taking off a pocket book containing some pa pers, valuable to no one but to Capt, Divine himself, and which that gen tleman is anxiousAto recover. For tunately he overlooked Capt. Di vine's watch and a roll of bank notes. Another room on the same floor was visited and some more money, a small amount, was obtain ed.
