There is one monopoly that money
cannot buy, that is if it is true that
the Carthusian monks have refused
$16,000,000 for the secret of their
liqueur. The Carthusian monks
have always been secure in the pro
tection of the French Government,
no matter what its complexion might
have been. Other religious orders
have been expelled from time to
time, but the Chartreuse monks have
never had occasion to fear the wrath
of the powers that be. They an
nually turn in $250,000 to the French
exchequer, and the profits of their
liqueur are distributed in charities
jn which they could use more than
tney receive. Their secret no one
has ever been able to reach, although
time and money have been wasted
in the effort. Experiments without
number have been made, but they
were as futile as the search to dis
cover the mysteries of the polar re
gions the freezing presence of an
iceberg being nothing to the nir of
chilliness with which the monks
have always treated the investiga
tor. There are. it is said, about fifty
different plants in the prepaiation
of the liqueur, finch monk has his
own grounds to cultivate, his own
workshop to himself, and in them
he pursues his daily manual occupa
tions without conversation with any
one, and alone to his self-commun-iugs.
The late disastrous strike on. the
horse car lines of New York seems
to have taught the workmen that
they should have some means of
protecting themselves from master
workmen who order ill-advised
strikes, ami should establish a pow
er among rhem Yiy whish such of
fenders can be quasi judicially pun
ished. The idea that some fuddle
headed or traitorous leaders can
plunge thousands of men into beg
gary without redress caused much
perplexity to men who adhere stead
fastly to such organizations, and a
suggestion of barbaric customs hav
ing oeen maue, tne question arose
in all seriousness apparently: "How
would it do to mark them so that
they may be known?" A secret cir
cular, which has been found in New
York, settles that question It says:
''We shall, therefore, create a sys
tern of secret labor polioeand secret
labor Courts, whose sentences will
be rigidly carried out by our secret
executive officers. Be it understood
that we do not mean to inflict capi
tal punishment, as we do not believe
that one human being has the right
to take the life of another human
being. But we will punish offend
ers in a way that they'shall be easi
ly known to whomsoever they meet.
The principal punishment to be in
dieted will be to out off the ears of
bribe-takers and traitors."

Stolen Spoons.
In a late dinner -speech General
Slocum told that once during "the
inarch to the sea" he had invited
Gen. Sherman to dine with him, and
was reproved by the former for
stealing, because he discoveretl on
the tablespoons marked "Milledge
ville Hotel." A few days after he
went to dine with General Sherman
and found spoons on his table mark
ed in the same way. Now that these
spoons are known to have been in
possession of Generals Sherman and
Slocum we trust that the Milledge
ville Hotel wjll make a demand for
the property. Both Generals in

Symptoms of Catarrh.
A profuse and many times exces
sively offensive discharge, with
"stopping up" of the nose at times,
impairment of the senses of smell
and taste, watering or weak eyes,
impaired hearing, irregular appe
tite, occasional nausea, pressure and
pain over the eyes and at times in
the back of the head, occasional
chilly sensations, cold feet and a
feeling of lassitude and debility, are
symptoms which are common to
catarrh, yet all of them are not pres
ent in every case. Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy cures catarrh in its worst
forms and stages. It is pleasant to
use, and contains no poisonous or
caustic drugs. Of druggists, for 50
