The trestle work of the new rail road bridge across the channel at the Hummocks is now completed. A part of the iron is here and it will be laid as fast as received. The trestle runs directly out from the railroad terminus at the Hummocks. There seems to have been less snow in Wilmington than at any other point in the State. We are credited with two inches here, while at Charlotte it was 12 2-10 and at Monroe 14 inches. There was more of it at Newbern than there was here. Pennsylvania. Referring to the item in yester day's Messenger regarding the origin and meaning of the names ot other States, we are informed that Penn sylvania is derived from transposing the names of William. Penn's daugh ter, Sylvania Penn. At the Opera House To-Night. The indications are that there will be a large and fashionable audience to-night at the Opera House to wit ness the cantata of Ruth. The ladies and gentlemen who are to appear have labored under many disadvan tages but they have persisted in the face of all obstacles and they will present a charming entertainment to-night. A Good Idea. It has been suggested that a bu reau be established here Jsimilar to the one in Paris, where parties find ing lost articles of not enough value to advertise can ieave them at the I bureau. So any one losing.atiything can leave word and if it is found and sent to the bureau can be re- turned to the owner. Proper safe- guards could be thrown around the records so that no one could secure the articles who were not the real owne.s. The idea is suggested by one who found a black glove on Fourth street yesterday j;nd would like to find the owner. Separately neither of the gloves is of any value, united they are w:orth probably a dollar. The police department at the City Hall could take charge of such a bureau at no expense and very little extra labor. Goods uu- claimed for, say three months, could be returned to the finder or the finder could retain the lost article in his own passession until the j real owner was discovered, simply leaving a record of it at th.e bureau. i n this Way the thaqcas of rascality j might be lessened. WILMINGTON, N. C MONDAY. FEBRUARY j The boy stood on the burningdeck, i and the wind was verv high. But he was calm and serene. Why? He had a small bottle of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup in his pocket, he did indeed. Mr. W. E. Davis leaves for Ral eigh to mo rrow with the memorial to the Legislature to re-establish the State Fish Commission. The memorial is endorsed by the Cham ber of Industry, Chamber of Com merce and Produce Exchange. A similar memorial is also going from Newbern, we are informed. Ieath of an Aged Lady. Mrs. Elizabeth Penny, relict of the late W. R. Penny and mother of the Messrs. Penny, of this city, and of whose extreme illness we spoke in Saturday's issue, died at the resi dence of Mr. S. H. Penny on Satur day evening, aged 74 years. The funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 9:80 o'clock this morning, after which the re mains were taken to Brunswick county for interment by the side of her husband in the family burying ground. City Taxes. It is suggested that our Board of Alderman change the time for pay ment ot city taxas. rney are now payable at the same time as the State and county taxes. If separate ed it would be a great boon to the poor, who frequently find it a great hardship to raise all at one time. We certainly must do all we can to lighten the burdens of the poor. It is also suggested that the city taxes, being much heavier than the State and county, be divided into two payments, six months apart. No additional expense would be entail ed on the city by doing this, Leitch, the Revivalist. There is considerable talk around town now about asking the Evan gelical Alliance to call Tom Leitch, the evangelist, to hold a series of meetings in the Tabernacle in this city this Spring. Many want Mr. Pearson but it is said he cannot be secured. Those who have heard both Sam Jones and Tom Leitch say Leitch is superior to Jones as an evangelist. Many want Mr. Jones but it is said he is engaged now for two years ahead. Mr. Leitch has just closed a meeting 'at Bennetts ville and goes thence to Spartan burg. It is thought he can be secur ed for vVilmington this Spring. Soribner's for March. Scrihners Magazine for March is a very bright and interesting number, with an excellent table of contents and profuse illustrations. 'The Railway Mail Service," by ex-Post master (ieneral Thomas L. James, is the leading article. It is beautifully illustrated. The fifth instalment of 'lThe Master of Ballantrae," by Robert Louis Stevenson, follows. Then we have "A German Rome," by W. B. Scott, with illustrations; "Economy in Intellectual Work," by William H. Burnham; "An Eye for an Eye," by Robert Grant; "Some of Wagner's Heroes and He roines," illustrated, by William F. Apthorp; "Mexican Superstitions," by Thos. A. Janier; "Extenuating Circumstances," by W. McR. Bangs; and "An Animated Conservation," by Henry James. There are three pretty poems in the number. Charles Scri oner's Sons, New York, at $3 a vear. And the World Moves. To some of us old "mossbacks" it will look real "funny"' to see a rail- j road running up and down Wrights j ville Banks, with neat cottages "here j and there, where people will not be j afraid to stay all night with thei1 ! little ones. A few years ago it was j sometimes a more difficult matter to iget from Wrightsville to the Banks : than it was to get from Wilmington ' to Wrightsville but now it is a very slight matter. Formerly no one i thought of remaining en the Banks ! all night and we oan recolleet one or two instances where parties were ! caught there on a dead calm and j compelled to remain all night, whose thrilling adventures were listened to next day with absorbing interest, j Now people are to remain there all night, and many nights, bv choice and preference. They will be lulled to sleeo bv t .he refrain of the s . cm t -rf w a a w a ivly' waves raid, awakened by er rour itjg cao-tody- Summer residen Wrightsville Banks! Well. the eeS On world do move. Adulterated Food. The burning question of the hour is the adulteration of food. We hear with alarming frequency now a -days of diseases which were form erly of rare occurrence. Paralysis and rheumatism are two evils which stalk abroad in the land now by night and by day. We believe that they are largely due to the adultera tipn of food, especially flour and lard. The legislature could do a good thing by tackling this matter We are surprised that the subject has not excited attention every where;that the adulterations do ex ist and that they are exceedingly injurious to the human system is beyond dispute. You buy a barrel of flour and you eat a peck of gyp sum. You use a can of lard and pro bably one-fourth of it is water and another fourth vile impurities. A lady in this city last Fall had occa sion to use some lard which she had got out herself from a hog she had purchased. She gave out the usual quantity for the bread, and when it came on the table it was so "short" that, she found out that one half part of the home made lard was eaual to one full nart of that he purchased. Such facts as these JL m are potent. As for fiour, the adul teration of this article of everyday food is well known. Yet there are flour mills in North Carolina which turn out a pure article, which can easily be obtained. Why not use this home made flour? Our dealers can get it and they can sell it. For some years previous to the war nearly all of ithe flour used here was manufactured in Fayetteviile. It was not as white as thejadulterat ed flour but it was a pure, sweet, nutritious article. Seven Years' Pastorate. Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, yesterday .completed seven years of pastoral labors in our city. He is the oldest resident pastor of the Christian churches in our city, for since his advent here all the churches have changed pastors. St. James' Church has the third, St. Paul's and St. John's each have the second rector, the First and Second Presbyterian Churehes each have new pastors, and so has the First Baptist, and Grace and Fifth Street Methodist Churches, each have the third pastor, and the Catholic Church has a new priest. All these changes have been made in seven years. With the rolling years the attach ment between pastor Snd people in the Lutheran Church seems to grow. During these' years Rev. Mr. Pes chau has missed holding services but once on"account of sickness, which isjjcertainly a remarkable record. SOME STATISTICS. Including the funeial discourses he has preached 700 times in Wil mington. He married 44 couples, buried86 persons, baptized 132 and confirmed and received from other churches 179. The Sunday school has almost doubled its numbers. Improvements have been made in the parsonage. The church has been revarnished, recarpeted and the pews recushioned. A new lecturn and new baptismal font have been added to the altar furniture. A most handsome pipe organ has been secured and Luther Memorial Build ing has been erected. Every society and association connected with the church has funds on hand, and the only debt the church has is one rest ing on Luther Memorial Building. This compact, though not exceed ingly large congregation, has raised, outside of its running expenses, tn these seven years $18,401.80. One of its young men is studying for the ministry. . "The church has indeed prospered wonderfully, both spiritually aud financially, under Mr. Pesehau's fos tering case. His pure life, his wise administration, his firm adherence to the right, his careful juagment, his fraternal feelings for Christians of other denominations and his scholarlv attainments have won for j him a place in the affections of his flock and the esteem of the general public that will prove a glorious crown'of consolation to him in h.isi declining years.. There, & cone thing aboht Mr. Pes eMu that is really remarkable and whteh w simply take occasion to mention here..
