Prof. Tripp gave a second lecture last night at Memorial Hall, on the subject of the Eastern question and the Crimean War, to another large and cultured audience. The com prehensive subject was treated in a lucid and masterly manner, and the lecture was conceded by those pres ent to be superior even to the one on the preceding evening. The third and concluding lecture to-night will be on the 'illl-Starred Mexican Expedition,"'' with the life ' and career of Maximilian and Car- lotta ahd personal reminiscences of the latter. The lecture will show by a large painted map the Panama Canal route, and the other two projected routes across the Isthmus. A -m mm . . t Me escaped wim jJiut a slight attack of the disease. j This reminds us of an incident of i devotion to duty, and the sacrifice I of a noble life, during the yellow fever epidemie which raged here in 1862. John H. Lewis was a native of this city, a young man of excel lent parts, of a high moral charac ter an 1 a pharmacist of excellent reputation. He was a brother to Messrs. R. J. and George Lewis, both now of this city. Lie learned the business wifchjMr. W. H. Lippitt, who was at that time the leading druggist in the town and whose es tablishment was located just where Col. (led rick is now, Northeast cor ner Market and Front streets. Mr. Lewis had scarcely arrived at man's estate Whenthe war broke out. He enlisted in the Wilmington Rifle Guards, Co. I, 18th N. C. Regiment, and was afterwards, because of his knowledge of medicine, detailed for duty in the office of the Medical Pur veyor of North Carolina, Dr. T. J. Boykin, now of Baltimore. Dr. Boy kin's headquarters were here at the time, in 18G2 the yellow fever was brought here on the steamer Kale, a blockade runner, which broke cargo at Smith ville. The yellow fever ap peared on her. The news was at first confined to the officials and to medical circles. Mr. Lewis heard o it and told us. He informed us that he believed the fever would become epidemie here; that if it did he knew that the drag elerks would desert their posts and that the 'need o pharmacists would be very great, in which case he should applyjro Dr Boykin to be detailed to assist Mr Lippitt. At the same time our frienc confided to us that he was greatly in dread of the disease and fearec that he would himself become a vic tim to it. His inclination, he told us, prompted him to fly the city but his duty called upon him to stay, as he knew that his services would be of great value in the emergency. It was all just as he said. The fever appeared here, it became epi demic, the drug clerks fled, and Mi Lippitt called upon Dr. Boykin for Mr. Lewis' assistance. That gentle man was detailed for duty there and he remained faithfully at work dav and night, until he too fell a victim. He died at his post, and with his harness on, and as gal lantlv as did ever a soldier on the field of battle. It was on a Friday or Saturday, we have never been able to recollect which, that while on horseback, en route for the Sound, we rsde up on the pavement in front of Mr. Lippitfs store and called Mr. Lewis to the door. We convei sed there pleasantly for some moments and then lightly giving each other the good-bye, we rode off. r3ut it was not good-bye;it was farewell, a long i are wen. it was the last time we ever saw him and he was then apparently in good health. We returned here on Mon dayhnorning and on enquiring for our friend learned that he was dead and buried! Mr. David G. Worth, of this city, and Capt. S. B. Alexander, of Char lotte, have been appointed by the Governor as North Carolina repre sentatives to the Washington Cen tennial at New York, in April. A Black Friday. That day, when a person is hrst seriously attacKen with rheumatism, may wen ne termed a black one, for he will re member the same as Ions as be lives.
