Mrs. FJtmiphry Ward has written another hook, which will soon be ready for publication, and the man" ner in which her representatives have set about disposing of the right to print tli i - work is calculated to make the average poor writer very envious indeed. Instead of writing to offer it for sale at. a certain price," Mrs. Humphry Ward communicates with various houses, telling their agents to send in applications for the book before 12 o'clock on the following dav or run the risk of no getting it. A government with a druggists. dozen big postofflces to build could not address the humble contractor in much different language. The Washing ton correspondent of the New York Word says: There is no question about it that Mr. Blaine did have, and has ex pressed, a hearty contempt for Mr. Harrison's abilities. It is arrant nonsense 4x say that Blnine nomi nated hhnat Chicago. The Blaine loaders, as every careful observer there knows, fought against him up to the very last ballot but one, and only yielded when the Pacific slope contingent made terms with John 0. New, broke ranks and went over to the Indiana candidate. John C. New, by the way, was treated with about the same contumely as was Warner Miller, and the Pacific coast is left out in the same frigid situa tion. You have heard something of the growling there, but you would hear more if Senators Jones and Stanford and Dolph and Mitchell talked out as their constituents are telegraphing thexi to do. It will all come in due time, when the San Francisco and Portland collector ships and the far Western State offices are parcelled out. These Sen ators, too, may side with Mr. Blaine if the breach comes. That Mr. Blaine is preparing for it and will lay pipes from this time on in view of it is apparent to and is admitted by every shrewd politician here. It is known absolutely to a few the fact was briefly telegraphed to the World some weeks ago that Gen. Harrison only invited Mi. Blaine to the Cabinet after two montiis' de lay. It was known by and was ad mitted by his close friends in Indian apolis that he was extreme! anx ious to find a sufficient reason for leaving1 Mr. Blaine out of his Cabi net He sought counsel with num bers of Mr. Blaine's avowed enemies ro Unci such a reason, out even Senator Sherman advised against it. He would wreck his Administration at the outset, they said, if he did not yield to the demand for Blaine. He did yield, but with such visible re luctance that it is still a matter of gossip in the Senate that his an tipathy to his Secretary of State has grown with him and is stronger to day than when, only late in Jan uary, he rote his letter of in vita tfon. It is also a matter of quiet yossip that Mr. Blaine was as visi bly anxious, as the weeks and months went by and he had no sign from Indianapolis, for the outcome of Gen. Harrison's hostility to him, contending with the enormous po iitical pressure brought against it. Mr. Blaine is a strong man, intol erant of opposition, proud of and confident in his ability, sure of a great majority of the party enthu siastically behind him. determined to make this Administration the legacy of his own reputation to the American peopie. He knows he could have been nominated at Chi cago. He is now sure that he would have been eleotel.
