Fnrered at the PostofHce at Wilmington, N.C. as second-class matter. The Oklahoma tract proper K-aces about 1,800,000 acres of em 11 " asinetl land tn the Indian lern tory. The President has jast ap proved the deed by which the Seminole Indians convey to the Government all their title to adja cent lands of wide extent. The Creeks have likewise ceded their lands in the same country. The area thus ceded embraces about 5,500,000 acres, which, with the Oklahoma tract proper, has Texas upon its Western border. The term Okla homa is often applied to the whole country. -The 4tboomersM are anx ious to o in and possess it. The President will soon by proclamation declare the country open for set tlers. - By the amended New Hampshire Constitution, members of the Legis lature will be paid a certain fixed sum, $200 each, whether the session is long or short. This is, of courgp, designed to prevent the representa tives from living too long at the Capital at the expense of the State. Illinois is troubled with a similar problem. The Constitution of 1843 provided pay of $2 a day for iuem hers of tlie General Aesembly for the first forty-two days, and $1 for every day of the session thereafter. The present Constitution fixes the pay at $5 a day, without any limitation. Consequently there is much absen teeism, and the session is prolonged by frequent 0 adjournments from Thursday to Monday. This syste mat ic loafing at the public expense has led to the formation of an amendment, which is now pending, providing pa'y of $10 for the first one hundred days and 2 a day thereaf ter, no pay to be drawn save when members are actually present. . - - - An Austrian newspaper has been collecting statistics of the number and variety of trusts existing in the various countries, but the record is far from complete. Germany has more than any other country, and tiey have attained there their great est power, y is asserted that the German tariff of 1879 has been the chief cause of their development. The United States come next with a great number and variety, some of which, however, are properly not trusts, but pools and corners. Eng land has a few. chiefly relating to articles like salt, of which the coun try possesses something like a. mo nopoly. Trusts are also found in almost all the European nations and in some countries in Asia. Mexican merchants and manufacturers haye recently combined to control the production and sale of sugar and cotton, and the Mexican Financier declares these combinations to be due to tlie high tariff on these arti cles. A correspondent of the Rome(Ga.) Daily Tribune, in a long and inter esting letter, shows that out of the sorrow and gloom and disaster of the yellow fever visitation evoked the substantial sympathy of the world, Jacksonville, Pla., has emerged one of the cleanest, pret tiest and most attractive c ties ol tne (jonttnerm ine money that starv- poured in for the relief of the ing thousands was wisely distributed among the healthy only as a reward for vigorous and effective work. As a consequence, Jacksonville is 20 per cent more attractive as a resort than it was last Winter. Miles on miles of the prettiest and most elas" tic pavements in the world are sup plemented by long, white shell roads, smooth as a floor and as hard, wind ing along the river and reaching beyond the remotest suburb. Out of these conditions the tribune's cor respondent builds great faith for the future of Jackson ville, and he thinks that "the next Winter will note the glorious renaissance." 840,000 Lost. "I lost forty thousand dollais by a periodical attack of nervous sick headache," said a Chicago capitalist to a correspondent, pointing across the street to a handsome corner lot. 'That lot was sold for ten thousand ,1 II A i tm uonars at puonc auction nve years ago, and I intended to buy it," but was too sick wih headache to at tend the sale, and it is now worth worth fifty thousand dollars. If he had known of Dr. Piercers Pleasant Pleasant Purgative Pellets they would have removed the cause of his headache biliousness and he would have made the money. Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative Pellets cure sick headache, bilious head ache, dizziness, constipation, indi gestion and bilious attacks; 25 cents a vial, by druggists. A SAO STORfc.
