The city is on its good behavior now. There were out two trilling cases before the Sdayor this morn ing. One of these was dismissed and the other was transferred to a mag- istrate's court. Officer Turlington this morning shot and killed a stray dog which has for some time past taken up her quarters on premises at the corner of Third and Mulberry streets. She was a vicious brute and would snap at people passing in the street and had bitten two persons. . She had become a great nuisance to the resi dents of that section and many at" tempts liad been made in vain to catch or kill her. Mayor Fowler passed there this morning and she snapped at him. He drew his pistol and she seized the muzzle between her teeth. He fired and she ran off wounded, but npt dead. Officer Tur lington then followed her up and killed her. Personal. We are sorry to hear that Mr. James Smith is quite sick with pneumonia, at his residence, corner Chestnut and Ninth streets. Messrs. Jas. I. Macks and Isaac Bear, delegates to the District Con vention of B'Nai B'Rit-h, in session last week at Savannah, have return ed to the city. Mr. Liuwood Lucas left here this morning for Durham, where he lias gone to assist in the management of Mr. A. F. Lucas' bottling works in that city. Mr, R. C. Cantwell having resign ed the position of money clerk at the postoffiee, Mr. James L. DeRos set has been promoted to the posi tion ami Mr. R. S. French takes the position vacated by Mr. PeRosset. Mr. Henry Gerdes, of New York, brother-in-law to Mr. Georere W. Bornemann,has removed to this city j and opened a grocery store at the corner of Eighth and Woosterj streets. We welcome him to the city and hope that his stay here may be long, pleasant and profitable. lUlM WILMINGTON, N, C Board of Aldermen . The new Board of Aldermen met last night in regular session. AH the members were present, Mayor Fow ler presiding. Certificates of election on the question of a subscription of $150, 000 by the city in aid o new manu facturing enterprises were read, and on motion referred to" the Commit tee on Ordinances. Election of Police Court Clerk be ing in order Alderman 'Smith nomi nated Mr. E. S. Daniel. No other nomination was made and Mr. Daniel was elected by acclamation. Both matters were referred to the streets and wharves committee. ' No other business of importance was transacted. ,After adjournment a petition wa8 handed in from the Committee on Manufacturing of the Chamber of Industry, asking an appropriation of $500 for the purpose and use of the Advertising Committee, to the end that the action of the peo ple may be thoroughly advertised throughout the country. It was handed to the chairman of the Fi nance Committee.- Auditand Finanee. The Board of Audit and Finance met in regular session yesterday af ternoon. All the members were present. " Communications received from the Board of Aldermen in relation to the purchase of a cremator for gar bage, etc., and for additional fire hydrants, were, on motion, laid over until the yearly appropriations are made. Bond of Mr. J. W. Perdew, as standard keeper, in the sum of $200, was approved; also, bond of W. B. Turlington, clerk of Front street market, in the sum of $300. Bills were audited and approved as follows: Current expenses, $4, 893.07: refunded poll tax, $2.76; re funded court fine, $4.00; costs in the case of Henderson Davis vs. the city, in which judgment was given for plaintiff in the 8uperiorCourt,$89.08 ' Why sit doubled up like an eld man, my boy! Review TUESDAY, APRIL 2, The second session of Prof. Bel lezza's Dancing Academy will open in Germania Hall to morrow after noon. The ladies' class will begin at 4 6'clock and that for gentlemen at 8 o'clock. The next class for ladies will be on Saturday afternoon and for gentlemen on Friday even ings. Death of Mr. Jeff Beery. We greatly regret to learn of the death of Mr. Jeff D. Beery. It oc curred at r?15 o'clock this morning, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. W. A. Willson. He had been sick for some time past and had been a great sufferer. Last week he was better and was able to get out but a few days ago the last attack seized him. He was the son of Capt. B. W. Beery and only 28 years of age. He was one of the most promising young men in the city and was courteous and affable, and honorable and upright in every department of iife He was too young to die, and life had many bright possibilities in store for him. His last end was peaceful, almost free of pain, and we nre sure that his young and manly spirit has gone tol a better and a brighter world than this. The funeral services will take place to-morrow afternoon, at 4 o'clock, at Grace Church, and the interment will be in Oakdale. County Commissioners. The Board met yesterday in regu lar session. All the members of the Board were present and Chairman Bagg presided. The reports of the County Treas urer, showing a balance on hand to the credit of the general fund of $22,521.04, and a balance to the credit of the educational fund of $21,099.50, were submitted and ap proved. The Register's report of receipts from marriage licenses during the month of Mardh, amounting to $10. 93, was received and ordered on file. W. M. Hines was appointed spec ial .surveyor to survey lands of John F. Hines and others, in Cape Fear township. Tax-listers for 1889 were appoint ed for the different townships as fol lows: Wvlmington J. Mason is appointed to superintend and direct the work. It was further ordered that the chairman issue a warrant to pay N. Jacobi $250 as damages done to his lands by opening the said road. ; Tne following resolution was adop ted by the Board: Wherkas, Complaints have been made agafnst the Board .of County Commissioners for not proceeding to dispossess parties who occupy prop erty purchased by the county at the sheriff's sale for taxes, in accordance with the revenue law, now there fore, be it Itesolved, That the chairman of this Board be, and is hereby in structed, to take immediate steps to gain legal possession of such prop erty. It was the occasion of the entertain ment given there by a number of ladies and gentlemen for the benefit of the Methodist Church. It was held in the Court House and the building was packed to its utmost capacity. There was a number from this city who went down on the Bessie yesterday afternoon to attend and they were all delighted. The entertainment is to be repeated to night. March's Mortuary. Dr. F. W. Potter, Superintendent of Health, has submitted his report for the month of March, showing that 34 deaths have occurred in the city during that month. Of the number 6 were white and 28 were colored. There were 3 adults and 3 children among the whites and 18 adults and 10 children among tne colored deaths. This is a very good showing, so far as the whites are concerned, but it is a bad record for the colored people. DIED.
