A white man by the name of Bry ant Carroll, a fisherman, was arrest ed yesterday in Brunswick county charged with the murder of his wife. An inquest was held during the aN ternoon by the coroner, Mr. J. . E. Williams. The principal witnesses was Mrs. Blandy Janney, an old lady nearly 80 years of age, and Carroll's aunt, with whom the couple lived. Mrs. Janney testified that Carroll came home Wednesday at noon. His wife was at work in the garden and her aunt called to her to come and get dinner for her hus band. After dinner was over, the old lady said, she was in an adjoin ing room when she heard Mrs. Car roll scream as if in pain and ask her husband what he had given her. Carroll had given his wife a drink of wine out of a bottle, and Mrs. Jan ney found her very sick, the woman dying about an hour afterwards in convulsions. Yesterday Drs. G. G.Thomas and T. S. Burbank, of this city, went over to the place ami 'made a post mortem examination. The result of this investigation was not made known, but some parts of the body and the bottle containing what was left of the wine were sent to the State Chemist at Raleigh for analy sis. Carroll was arrested Wednes day evening and c ommitted to jail, pendiug a further investigation. Carroll had very little to say about his wife's death, beyond denying the charge that he caused ik Carroll is only about 24 years old while his wife is at least ten years his senior. He married her in John ston county about four years ago and only recently returned to Bruns wick county. . , . ... i.;nu l .1 m. li ri w m ik r l. i i ' mi . i : W.
