Ilicox A -o., N.r Mr. Ward McAllister, who has been held up so much as the leader of the four hundred who are sup posed to form the .exclusive society of New York, chums to be "si in ply a modest citizen living on a modest income, and making no claim what ever to be a leader in society.11 Mr. McAllister was originally from the State of Georgia, where his errand father was Chief Justice and his father Judpre of the Circuit Court of I the United States. Before the war he was a leader in the old and ex- His friends say he never set up The claim that there are only four hun dred people in society in New York. What he did nay, according to his defenders, was in answer to the question "How many persons can you count on to come to a swell bill?" He answered four hundred. Then a list was made out and he re vised it. From this, if is said, came the celebrated story of the four hun dred, upon 'which the New York press has been ringing the changes for a long while. - As already stated the Atlanta Constitution has opened a subscrip tion with the view of raising $50,000 to found a home for the needy and disabled Confederate soldiers of that State. About $ 10,000 was subscribed within twenty-four hours after the opening of tlie subscription lists, of which Mr. (Teorge T. Gr. White, of Nhw York, contributed $1,000. It is expected to secure the desired $50, 000 within ten days, after-which it is proposed to build a model home with, perhaps, three thousand acres of laftd, with an allowance of ten acres and a cottage for every depen dent Confederate and his family. The Constitution has received tele grams from editors in almost every town and city in Georgia favoring the establishment of a home and pledging their help. The Constitu tion takes th" ground that the ef forts now being made in the North .to secure funds to build a Confeder ate home should be abandoned and that each State should at once in augurate measures for caring for its disabled and needy Confederate vet erans. Governor Gordon has en dorsed the movement in an earnest appeal to his old soldiers to do all in their power for the relief of their destitute fellow soldiers. Generous responses are coining in every day. "Logic is H.ogicJ" Now there was the case of our friend McKay: He said to himself, in his resolute way. Hood's Sarsaparilla is a peculiar medicine, possessing, by virtue of its peculiar combination, proportion, and preparation, curative power superior to any other article. A Bosron lady who knew what she wanted, and whose example is worthy imitation, tells her experience below: To Get " In one store where I went to buy Hood's Sarsaparilla the clerk tried to induce me buy their own instead of Hood's; he told me their's would last longer; that I might take it on ten days' trial; that if I did not like it 1 need not pay anything, etc. But he could not prevail on me to change. I told him I knew what Hood's Sarsaparilla was. I had taken it, was satisfied with it, and did not want any other. Hood's When I began taking Hood's' Sarsaparilla I was feeling real miserable, suffering a great deal with dyspepsia, and so weak that at times I could hardly stand. I looked, and had for some time, like a person in con sumption. Hood's Sarsaparilla did me so much good that I wonder at myself sometimes, and my friends frequently speak of it." Mrs. Eela A.
