What That Firing Was. The Oneida, a handsome steam yacht of 30 tons, -the property of Mr. Benedict, of New York, has been lyiug in -the river for the past two days. About 2 o'clock this morning she fired off some pieces of ordnance which she has On board and the noise was such that people were awakened as far East as Ninth street. Considerable alarm was felt at first by many as it was felt sure that some boiler had exploded. It is probable that Mr. Benedict and his friends dined late and dined well and that they overlooked the in ference that might be put upon the firing off of cannon at 2 o'clock in the morning. Good Friday in the Lutheran Church. An unusually large congregation met in the German services yester day morning, in St. Paul's Evangeli cal Lutheran Church. The church had been very neatly and tastefully decorated by the ladies for the day, using the handsome moss with which our woods abound. An un usually large number of persons partookof the Holy Communion. Two more members were added to the church. In the English services at 8 p, in., the church was not only full, but crowded even the galleries being full from end to end. The music on the occasion, as was also the music of the morning service, was of a very superior character, solemn, earnest and .appropriate and full, of sweetest harmonies. Mr. J. H. Render, be fore the beginning of the Divine services played an exquisitely fine solemn solo, en the cornet, and dur ing the services the choir rendered an anthem. One member was received from anothei church, and one adult con firmed. The catechatical class of seven was then received into the full communion of the church by the holy rite of confirmation, which is ever an impressive service. During this week 19 persons have been added to the communicant- membership of the church, and this number, with those received in the past year beginning with last Eas ter, by baptism, confirmation and from other ehurches, reaches the number of 65.
