A. M. E. Robinson, of Keucka, Fla., who is an experienced fruit banner, claims to have discovered a piocess whereby oranges can be canned successfully. It is said that the cost would not be more than in canning peaches, that the labor' cans, labels and case would cost about $1.10 per case of two dozen. Fifty strokes for an adult offeuder and twenty-five for a boy is the lim it, though a sentence may providei for several whippings. The offences for which grown-up people may be flogged, under the bill, include the discharge of arms, etc., to injure or alarm the Queen; robbery, assault with intent to rob, etc., where the offender is armed with any danger ous or offensive weapon; garrotting, etc.; gross cases of rape, etc. -.assaulting girls under the age of 13. The following cases were disposed of this morning by the Mayor: W. B. Daws, cruelty to animals, was found not guilty. Amanda Moore, disorderly con duct, guilty, $26 or 30 days. Alice Samson, disorderly conduct, guilty, $20 or 30 days. There were also nine young men up before the Mayor this morning on the charge of disorderly conduct but they were dismissed with a warning. Audit and Finance. The Board of Audit and Finance met in called session yesterday af- ernoon, pursuant to adjournmept to consider the estimates oi the Board of Aldermen for current ex penses for the present fiscal year. There were present, Mr. R. J. Jones, chairman, and Messrs. J. F. Maun der. Win. Calder, W. R. Kenan and John W. Hewett. The chairman stated the purpose for which the meeting was called, and that the estimates in the aggre ate amounted to 101,8w.4O, ex clusive of amount required to pay maturing bonds, coupons, interest and floating debt. After much dis cussion, the following resolution, submitted by Mr. Calder wasadopt eJ: Resolved, That the Chairman of this Board be requested to return to the Board of Aldermen their estimates of expenditures for the current year, with a detailed state ment of the fixed expenditures of the city and an estimate of the expected income, including an increased levy of 25 per cent.' on real estate and personal property to meet interest on railroad bonds,, with the request that the Board of Aldermen revise their estimates or devise ways and means to meet them. C, who lias been in the city for about ten days, leaves here to night on his return to the Capita Mr. Easterday, by his courteous geinality, has made a number of warm friends here who will be glad to have him repeat the visit at an early day. Tne Burgaw and Onslow Railroad. Mr. John H. Mashburn, of the Angola section of Pender county, was in the city to-day. He tells us that his pebple have faith in the promises of the Burgaw and Onslow Railroad Company to build the road. They ask nothing of the people but the right of way, which will be freely accorded them. A survey is to be begun to morrow and Mr. Mashburn thinks, as do we, that the line will not be far,from Bannepman's bridge, where it crosses the river. It is all of 35 miles by the county road from Burgaw to Jacksonville. Building Fund of the Y. M. C. A. A large and interesting meeting ot the Y. M. C. A. was held at their rooms last night, to concert meas ures to raise the balance of the amount necessary to complete the building fund. It was stated that $21,000 is now pledged and that the work will not be begun until $25,000 is raised. A number of young men volunteered to take around sub scription lists to raise the $4,000 needed, and they were on th.e street t -day but had not reported at 4 o'clock. Scribner's Magazine.
