Savannah is already taking action i
to prevent suspicious travelers from j
Florida stopping in that city.
King Christian, of Denmark, will
decorate Capt. Murrill, of the Mis
aouri. Every man on the ship should
receive some grateful recognition.
It is undoubtedly true that there
is yellow fever at Sanford, Fla.
One sporadic case has 'been dis
covered there, resulting in the death
of the patient. To be forewarned
is to be forearmed, antl this early
and timely discovery may result in
preventing an epidemic.
Capt. Hamilton Murrell, of the
steamship Missouri, who carried
365 (one, for every day of the year)
of the wrecked passengers of the ill
fated Danmark into the port tf
Philadelphia on Tuesday, is being
wined and dined to a great extent
by the hospitable Quakers. The
Baltimoreans will also fete him.
Does not our brother of the News
and Observer get rather mixed on
colors when he applies the line from
Burns: ''The modest crimson-tipped
flower'' to the primrose? He for
gets. "A primrose on the river brim,
a yellow primrose to him it was."
&c. Burns was talking to a daisy.
Durham Plant.
Seems to us you are both some
what mixed. The quotation is not
correct. We have seen yellow prim
roses and white primroses but never
a crimson one, nor have we ever
seen a crimson daisy.

Here' is an item of considerable in
terest to newspaper men. We ex
tract it from the Herald:
Arkansas City, Kan., April 23.
One of the most, interesting inci
dents of the opening of Oklahoma
occurred iipon the return to Arkan
sas City this afternoon of the train
carrying newspaper correspondents.
Seven of the Chicago and other
Western correspondents had pooled
their issues and eugaged a cowboy
to meet them on horseback just af
ter the "train entered the yards at
Arkansas City and to gallop furious
ly to the telegraph offices. Mr.
James Cox, of the St. Louis Globe
Democrat was shut out of the com
bination.
The plan worked beautifully until
the cowboy had galloped half a
block on his way to the telegraph
office. Then Mr. Cox saw the
schenfe, and leaping from the mov
ing train he started n foot after the
horseman. It was a run of more
than a mile to the telegraph office.
By a spurt Mr. Cox overtook the
horse and then a desperate race be
gan. The cowboy lashed his horse
vigorously, but he could not shake
off the fleet footed correspondent.
On the last eighth of a mile Mr.
Cox spurted like a sprinter, and by
a terrific effort reached the tele
graph office forty rods ahead. When
he entered the office he could hard
ly stand or see. His exploit was the
talk of the town to night. The cow
boy has not since been seen.

It was the second of the series, and
although not so largely attended as
it might have been yet it was very

dance was prolonged until an early

delightful repast was served, after
which the dance was resumed.
Ring tHe Bells.
On the morning of April 30, 1889'
at 9 o'clock, it has been arranged
that the church bells all over the
country shall ring to celebrate the
event of one hundred years ago,
when the church bells throughout
thirteen states rang out to call the
people together to pray for the tsuc
cess and f)rosperity of the country
under Gen. Washington, that day
inaugurated President of the United
States. A call is made from the
committee having charge of these
arrangements that in every church im
the land service be held to implore
a continuance of the favor which
has been shown the nation since its
birth, and we hope that every
church in Wilmington will peal its
bells and throw open its doors for
service at 9 o'clocK on next Tuesday

J. ELSBACH, Prop'r.
Board of Aldermen.
The Board of Aldermen met in
called session at the City Hall last
night to consider a reduction df es.
ti mates for appropriations for the
current year. All the members of
the Board were present, and Mayor
Fowler presided. The Mayor stated
the object of the meeting, and on
motion the rules were suspended
and tbe Board went into Committee
of the Whole to consider the matter.
The Mayor stated that it would be
necessary to takejip appropriations
made for'each department in their
regular order f or revision'ahd reduc-
Ltion.
A communieotion from the Board
of Audit and Finance was read by
the clerk as follows:
To the Board of Aldermen of the City
of Wilmington, JS. c:
Gentlemen: The estimates made
bv your Board to meet the neces
sary expenditures for the several
departments of the city government
for the current-fiscal year have been
received and submitted to the Board
of Audit and Finance for their con
currence, and after a careful esti
mate of the same, the following res
ol nt ion was adopted:
"Resolved, That the Chairman of
this Board be requested to return to
the Board of Aldermen their esti
mates of expenditures for the next
year, with a detailed statement of
the fixed expenditures of the city
and an estimate of our expected in
come, including an increased levy of
twenty five cents on real and per
sonal property to meet interest on
railroad bonds, with the request
that they revise their estimates or
devise- ways and means to meet
them."
Under the above resolution I
herewith submit an estimate of the
expected income of the city for the
city for the current fiscal year,
which is based upon the last year's
report of the city treasurer.
From all sources $128,200.06
To which add an increase
of 25 cents on real
estate and personal, es
timated to produce 13,500.00
Estimated income of the
city for fiscal year '$131,700.06
The fixed expenditures of the City
are :
Interest on bonded debt. $34,320.00
Do. on railroad bouds
(estimated)
Interest on loans
Sinking fund
Bonds due in July
Old bonds not yet present-
ed for payment
7,500.00
2,500.00
2,000.00
5,500.00
5,000.00
Floating debt 14,600.00
Total amount of fixed expenses
$71,420.00; leaving for current ex
penses only $70,280.06, while the
grand total for current expenses
foots up $102,246.40.
You can readily see the necessity
for our action iii asking for a re
vision of the estimates before us.
Very Respectfully,
Richard J. Jones,
Chairman.
After prolonged discussion over
almost every item of the appropria
tions the session continuing from
8 o'clock vntil 11 reductions in ap
propriations were agreed upon as
follows; Light department, $378;
markets, $550; water works, $1,000 '
permanent improvement of streets,
$6,475. Making a total reduction of
$8,403.
The appropriation for streets and
wharves was increased by adding
$l0r required for feeding two horses
omitted in the original estimate. .
A motion, submitted by Alderman
Pearsall was adopted, that the Board
of Audit and Finance be informed
that all the reductions deemed pos
sible bad been made, and that if
other reductions are necessary that
a joint meeting of the two boards be
held to consider the matter.
The Board then went into an elec-
