APRIIi 30. 1889. Watered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N.C., as second-class matter. "Lucky" Baldwin, the Califoruia millionaire and horseman, divitles up his time now between San Francisco and his celebrated San Anita ranch. He owns about G0,000 acres of the finest land in San Grabriel valley, and boasts of the most beautiful orange grove in Southern California, as well as of the largest and choicest stable of thoroughbreds. Durmg the great boom in land in Southern California Mr. Baldwin sole about 5,000 acres at prices ranging from $500 to $1,500 an acre for unimproved land. Upon his raueh at Santa Anita grew up several large towns, with line hotels and costly brittle business blocks. Mr. Baldwin, however, refused to sell any of the orange irrove or vineyards about his pre'ty chateau on the.artifica! lake at Santa Anita, andevery year adds to the beauty of this great domain. At least half of the little Pacific islands that have been annexed by Europen powers within the past few years have petitioned to be taken under somebody's wing, and that is how they got there. A few traders make up their minds that a protectorate would be a good thing, and so they set petitions eirculat inc. AH their customers are ex pee ted to sign them, and their cus" tomers friends, being of an obliging nature, o!o the saiue thin-r, though thev have not the slightest idea what it is all about. By the time everybody has affixed his name or mark to the mysterious document it looks as though the entire com munity were bursting with desire to become subjects of some far away potentate. In due time the petitions reach the .foreign office of some great power, where they make a lep -impression; the first the world knows some European hen is cluck ing, over a new emeKen in the Pacific. Now and then, however, the petitions are refused, an unmis takable proof that some spots in the Pacific are not worth annexing. "The New York Times of Thurs day says: "Fifty years of debt ex tinguished; $000,000 raised within three years;cbending burdens re moved; Masonry fn New York relieved from bondage this happy state of affairs was celebrated enthusiastically last night through out the length and breath of New York State. A jubilee it was called, and a jubilee it was. Seven hun dred and seventeen lodges joined in pleasing celebration, for every meet ing place of the craft in all the State was open, and in every one there was rejoicing. Back in 1842 the Masons of New York tietemrined upon the organization of a hall and asylum fund. Anti -Masonic issues arose. Hardships fell upon the craft. They strove earnestly, but they made no such progress as they sought. Finally, however, the magnificent temple, an object for all sightseers in New York, arose. It has stood cumbered with death, however. Ways and means were planned and earnest endeavor toiled to clear away the burden, all in vain. The Masons of New York were in bonds, and few were opti mistic enough to see arty where more than the faintest ray of hope for bursting the chains. And so it was when, three years ago, Frank R. Lawrence came to the seat of the Grand Master of the State. He was young, he was hopeful, he was full of faith even that the day of free" dom for Ids oi'der could not be merely reached but hastened. He went to work with all the ardor of his youth and high purpose, and last night in every lodge room in the State it was his pleasure and his glory, too, to cause an address to be read, announcing that the debt had been cancelled.
