LACK OF LIFE,
When the pulse beats feebly; when the en

sleep uncertain, the body is In a condition of
actual "low life." No matter what the causes
may have been Nature has given way and un
less her strength Is restored disease is certain
to take possession of the body. The tlrst
thing any doctor does in such a case is to as
sist Nature. Here are some instances:
Prof. Austin Flint, of Bellcvue (New York)
College, says: "The Judicious use of alcoholic
stimulants Is one of the striking characteris

during tue last nail ceniury.
The celebrated Dr. J. M. carnwall says: "I
am most happy to say, after a very thorough
test, that for persons suffering with nervous
and general debility or any wasi ing disease, or
for delicate persons or invalids. Duffy's Pure
Malt Whiskey is the be3t tonic aud purest
stimulant with which 1 am acquainted.-'
There are no higher sclentlflc authorities

Mrs. Hettv Green, once one of the
shrewdest operators' in Wall street,
is perhaps the richest woman in
America, her weaUMi being esti
mated to be anywhere from $40,000,
000 to $50,000,000. She inherited
$10,000,000 from h-r father, Edward
Mott Robinson, who laid the founda

business. ilef husband, E. H.

In the Amies court martial, now
In progress in at Washington, it was
developed that Capt Armas, who
it will he remembered pulled Gov
ernor Beaver's nose in the lobby of
the Riggs House, in revenge for
Beaver's ordering him out of the
inaugural procession, had received
secret 'orders to ride alongside of
the President's carriage. It seems
that the sergeant-at arms of the
Senate detailed a special . guard for
the occasion to protect, the life of
the President, and that Amies was
one of them. It is thought that
Amies will be acquitted.

There is a suicide club in Bridge
port, Conn., the existence of which
was brought to light 'by the death
of John Kiewzy, a wealthy German,
who blew out his brains. Inquiry
establishes the fact that the club
was formed in a sajoon formerly
owned by Kiewzy. There were six
members at the start, and four of
them have committed suicide. Each
of the members has shown some
eccentric,ities. Henry Jansen, the
president, led off by taking poison.
William Meckel cut his throat.
Cfeorge Leavenworth, a newspaper
man, took chloral. Still another
employed the pistol. The fifth man
concluded that he had had enough
of the folishness and withdrew.
A novel legal question may be
raised by the enforced idleness of
convicts in New York prisons, con
sequent on the failure of the Legis
lature and -Governor Hill j to agree
on a measure for setting them at
work. The attorney for an inmate
at the Sing Sing prison proposes to
go to court and ask for the discharge
of his, client on the ground that,
being sentenced for a term at hard
labor, he is being illegally held in
conefinement without labor. The
convict himself lias prompted
the inquiry whether he cannot be
discharged on the ground, and
asserts that being idle is killing
him bv inches.

An Important Announcement
About six weeks ago, while at business, I
was suddenly attacked with excruciating
pains in my feet, knees and hands. So severe
the attack that 1 took my bed Immediately,
and In two or three days. my joints were
swollen to almost doable their natural size,
and sleep was driven from me. After suffer
ing the most excruciating pain for a week,
using liniments and various other remedies,
a friend who sympathised with my helpless
condition, said to me :
'Why don't you get Swift's Specific and
use it. I will guarantee a cure, and if it does
not the medicine shall cost you nothing."
I at once secured the S. S. S., and after
using It the first day, had a quiet night and
refreshing sleep. In a week I felt greatly
benefitted. In three weeks I could sit up and
walk about the room, and after asms; six
bottles I was out and able to go to business.
