The Great Dismal Swamp,

more so than the human system
when blocked up by decayed animal

- The annual reports of the Board
of Managers and the Surgeon in
charge of the City Hospital, for the
year ended December 81st, 1888, were
submitted. The managers say the
hospital is now firmly estab
lished and growing in favor,
"and we feel gratified to know
the past year has been the most sue
cessfui of its existence, as tne re
ceipts show, being $069.01, while for
18S7 they were $333.03. And we feel
confident that had we been able to
build and furnish a ward with prop
er conveniences for pay patients the
receipts would have been three
times as large; but the amount ap
propriated for that purpose .we
found insufficient. If we can get an
additional appropriation to com
plete this important work we fee
the time is not far distant when the
institution wilt he, probably, self
sustaining and a pride and an or
nament to the city. Dr. Lane in
his report says: 'I have been unre
mitting during the3'ear in in y efforts
to increase our pay patient fund,
with the result showing 52 jmv pa
tients and over $600 receifrcC On
several occasions 1 was embarrassed
for room, and at present have more
in the hospital than the number of
rpoius appropriated for patients.' "
In closing their report, the Board
sneak in high terms of the manage
ment of the hospital by Dr. Lane,
and of his skill, ore and attention'
