STATE NEWS Robcsonian: Mr. William (ior nian, a hotelist, died in this town of a cancerous affection of the throat last Sunday night about 12 o'clock. Mr. Grorman came to this place about two years ago to take charge of the National Hotel. Charlotte News: Mr (). W. Bad ger's "Dandy" and Mr. J. M. Ken drick's "Lulu K." were this morn ing shipped to Philadelphia to take part in the races at that city. These animals are regarded by horse fan eiers as splendid ones, and- they are expected to make a record at Phila delphia. Beck's stables of six horses, that were in the 20th May races .here, were also shipped to Philadel phia this morning. Elizabeth City Economist: Capt. Peter Warren, of Eienton, an ex cellent man and widely known as a skilled fisherman and inventor of the steam process in seine hauling, departed this life in Edenton week, aged near 70 years. Capt. Warren was a native of Gates coun ty. One hundred and thirty dollars an acre from a first crop of spring greens, to be followed by a second crop of something wise on the same ground this season is not bad farming. M M M M M they say farming don't pay. Durham Recorder: The sad intel ligence reached Durham Saturday evening from Morganton, announc ing the death of Mr. John W. Carr, 'IF YOU 1 of Chapel Hill. The remains were brought here for interment. Mr. Carr was born April 25rh 1814 and died May 25th 1880. Aged 75 years and 1 month. The deceased prominent citizen of the State and leaves the following chi.dren to mourn their loss: Mr. J. S. Carr, Dr. A. (t. Carr. Mrs. W. A. Guthrie, of Durham; Mr. R. E. Carr. and Mrs. J. T. Harriss, of Chanel Hill, and Mrs. J. F. Heitman,. of Trinity Col lege. Asheville Citizen: The mill house owned by Mr. uiarK i. Kteu and 10 cated on the swannano river, near Best, was destroyed by fire Sunday mornihg, involving a loss to the proprietor of about $1,500. Origin; of the fire is unknown. The mill is i to be rebuilt at once. Dr. Btoyles j exhibits quite a curiosity. It ; is the iron hook with which the: body of Prof. Elisha Mitchell was pulled out of the pool on Black Mountain in which he lost his life while surveying the peak which bears his name, over thirty years ago. The hook was made at the order of Dr. Broyles who aceom : panied the party which discovered lost scientist's body. Sehua Reporter: Our farmers in this section are being blessed with copious and refreshing showers 1 Mrs. Nancy Hood, wife of Mr. S. 1J. Hood, died in Selma on Monday,the 37th inst., aged 71 years. Mrs. Hood has for a number of yars been a consistent member of the Baptist , Church. The farmers of Macon county have been so annoyed by the wholesale destruction of ti'eir sheep by wolves that they con eluded to devote last week to a grand wolf hunt. Thy made up four very large parties, led by thirty experienced huntets, andafter two" days' unsuccessful search, came upon the wolves Friday in a thicket of rhododendron, near the base of an immense wall of rock. Their 1 dogs got the wolves at bay, but it was found that they were m a cave ! with a small opening. The hunters j sk were not xo De naiKeu, and oeiran a J livelv fire into the cave with th-ir ! mile from repeating rifles. When there was! quiet, one of the hunters crawled! inside and found no less than seven wolves. Three more were killed in the course of the hunt, one after a desperate fight with the dogs.
