Officer of Alabama, returned to
Montgomery yesterday from a trip
to South Florida and Havana. He
went to investigate the yellow fever
situation. He reports that there
has been no yellow fver in Florida
since January except one case re

The new law which has just gone
into effect in New Jersey forbidding
any person to marry minors except
in the presence of guardians or par
ents, or unless a properly authen
ticated certificate of their consent is
presented, w ill seriously affect the
marriage business of Camden and
all the other Jersey towns across
the Delaware from Pennsylvania.
The father of Hugh Mot-tram
Brooks, alias Maxwell, who was
hanged at St. Louis last summer for
the murder of Charles Arthur Prei-
ler, clings with pitiful persistence
to the belief that his boy was inno
cent. The foreman of the jury that
convicted Brooks recently received
a letter from the old'gentleman, who
lives in England, which is full of
bitterness against those whom he
styles the murderers of his son.
There is a row in Pittsburg labor
circles over a notice given by the
Secretary of the National Brother
hood of Carpenters to the effect
that any of the members who are at
tached to the Knights of Labor
cannot receive either sick or death
benefits. The members of the
Knfghts of Labor think this is the
beginning of an open fight for su
premacy tey the American Federa
tion of Labor against the Knights of
Labor.

An excursion party, filling seven
coaches, arrived this morning from

jority of them went, down to the

In consequence of the torn up
condition of the gutters at the cor
ner of Market and Second streets
the water rose over the sidewalks
and run into the stores on the South
side of Market street to day.

The amount of rainfall since the
beginning of the storm at7:50o'clock
yesterday morning to 3:20 p. m. to
day is .80.
No report of damage in this local
ity has been received here.
At 8 o'clock this morning the
storm was central in Pennsylvania,
Rain was general in all States
East of the Mississippi River. The
largest fall for the 24 hours ending
at 8 a. m. to day are reported from
KnoxvilljvPetroit, Lynchburg and
Charlotte.

Narrow Escape.
A small sail boat was upset in the
river near Point Peter, yesterday
afternoon by a sudden squall of
wind. The two men in the boat
clung to the overturned craft, but
the water was so rough they were
unable to right it. Persons on the
west side of the river, however, got
a boat and went to the assistance of
the men and taking them into their
boat, towed the other to the C. F. &
Y. V. railroad wharf.

Bobberies.
Some time during last
thieves entered the premises of Mr.
Geo. S. Willis, 812 Chestnut street,
and robbed his pantry of all the
provisions .it contained, taking the
buckets which had lard and flour in
them. After cleaning out the pan
try they broke open a window to
the kitchen and took a bag of eggs
that were on a table near the win
dow. The noise was heard by mem
bers of the household, but as a
strong wind was blowing at the
time, it was supposed to have been
caused by a loose window shutter.
Mr. Willis had to go shopping this
morning before the family got break
fast.
The house of Mr. Charles J. Pleas
ants, who lives on Seventh, between
Dock aud Orange streets, was broken
open and robbed last Wednesday, a
gold watch, pistol and other articles
being taken. Mr. Pleasant's family
are absent from the city, and when
he returned home from business at
10 o'clock Wednesday night, he
found that the house had been en
tered and robbed. The back door
had been broken open with an axe
which' was found on the premises.
The Firemen's Excursion.
The complimentary excursion
given yesterday by Chief Newman
to a number of his fellow firemen
ami trienus was an exceedingly en
joyable affair. At the Beach an
excellent supper was served by Mr.
Perry, of the Oceanic House, to
which the party sat down at half
past 5 o'clock. After about an hour
spent at the supper table, which
was spread with every variety of
fish obtainable and an abundance
of other refreshments, the party
started on the return trip.
On the boat an informal gathering
f the guest was held in the 51 eon,
Mr. W. P. Oldham being called to
the chair and Mr. W. C. Craft acting
as secretary. On motion a commit
tee of five, to which the chairman
was added, was appointed to pre
pare resolutions. The committee
consisted of Messrs. W. P. Oldham,
L. S. Blenden, J. W. Duls, H. L.
Fennell and S. C. Weill. Through
their chairman, Mr. Weill, the com
mittee reported the following, which
was adopted unanimously:

Co. No. 1 and the "Dennis" Alder,
manic Family, and other invited
guests, in meeting assembled upon
the Sylvan Grove, appreciating the
hospitalities of Martin Newman,
Chief of Fire Department, in bis
complimentary excursion to Caro
lina Beach, and desirous of express
ing their appreciation of the cour
tesy, therefore be it
Resolved, That we warmly recog
nize the generosity extended by Mr.
Newman in providing for our com
fort and pleasure, and furnishing a
most delightful entertainment for
all present.
Resolved, That we will ever cher
ish and often recall the occasion
and its many pleasant incidents, and
only hope that all our pleasures and
comforts may be ministered to by
so kind and attentive a host.
Remarks, expressive of apprecia
tion of the pleasures of the trip, were
