That was a terrible catastrophe which occurred at Johnstown, Pa., on the 31st ult. By the breaking of the dam to a reservoir, two and a half miles northeast of the town, the pent upj waters were let loose and an apparling loss of life was the result. The latest estimate is that 4,000 lives were lost and property to the amount of $11,000,000 was de stroyed. Entire towns were wash ed, so that scarcely a vestige of them remains. Every house in the vicinity which has been left stand ing is a charnel house in which the drowned have been temporarily placed. Death and destruction is on every hand and it seems as if the wrath of God had doomed the peace ful and prosperous valley. - Tell the good news to the suffer ing At last is a remedy found, Which might have saved, had they known it. The provisions of the law relative to listing property for taxation were materially changed by the last Leg" islature, and, as the laws have not yet been distributed, it may pre vent trouble to acquaint the people with them. Listing is required dr ing the month of June, and all who fail to give in their property during that month will have to list before the board of county commissioners up to the second Monday in July, and are required to ay twenty five cents for recording and five per cen turn on the regular amount of tax. All persons liable to poll tax and fail to give in, and all who own property and fail to list it by the second Mondav in Julv, will be charged with double tax, deemed iruiltv of a misdemeanor, and on conviction be fined or imprisoned As the new laws will not be sent out before the middle of June, this in formation is very important and Silver Wedding Celebration The well known and highly es teemed groceryman, Mr. F.
