Creasy preached in the Methodist Church at Lumberton last Wednesday night and the Robe sonian, in speaking of him, says: His reputation had preceeded him so that our people looked for a most eloquent discourse', but it is just to say that the sermon far exceeded the highest expectations of his most enthusiastic admirers. Indeed, he captured all hearts. His manner is simply perfect, his flow of language grand and majestic. As a pulpit orator he has but few equals. The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Wilmington Home stead and Loan Association was called at the City Hall last night. Mr. C. C. Borden was requested to act as chairman. The chairman ap pointed Messrs. J. D. Smith, J. D. Bellamy and C. C. Brown a commit tee to verify stock, but as a majority of the stock was not represented, the meeting adjourned till next Mon day night at 8 o'clock at the City Court room. Death of an Old Citizen. We regret very much to learn of the death of Mr. John S. McEachern, an old and highly esteemed resident of this city. He died at 3 o'clock this morning, in the 60th year of his age, and leaves a wife and seven children to mourn their irreparable loss. He had been in failing health for some time past and his death was not unexpected. Mr. McEachern had long been identified with the business interests of our city. He was made a mem ber of the Board of Audit and Fi nance on its first formation and was one of the founders of Bellevue Cemetery Company and the only Secretary and Treasurer it has had since its organization. For many years past he has been a zealous and consistent member of the First Baptist Church. The funeral ser vices will be held at that church to morrow and the interment will be in Bellevue. S500 for tlie Sufferers. A meeting of the citizens to take action looking towards contributing to the relief of the sufferers by the flood at Johnstown and other places in Pennsylvania, was held at the rooms of the Produce Exchange at noon to day. On motion of D. L. Gore, Esq., Mr. B. G. Worth was called to the chair and Col. John L. Cantwell was requested to act as secretary. After a full and free expression oj sympathy with the sufferings of our fellow citizens in their affliction and distress, on motion of Donald Mac Rae, Esq., it was 'unanimously re solved that $500 be sent as a contri bution from this city and that the chairman appoint a committee to solicit subscriptions for that purpose and that this committee be request" ed to forward the same. The chair appointed Messrs. D. L. Gore, P. Heinsberger and Octavius Hick's as the committee to solicit contributions. Adjourned. Heartless Sport. We clip the following from the Marion Index. We have read it and with eyes full of disgust. We did not dream that such a thing could be pos sible in this enlightened section and in this enlightened age. If there is a S. P. C. A. anywhere in South Carolina, they should interfere to prevent this heartless sport: Florence is to have a bull fight! Fifteen bulls from North Carolina and a like number from our own State will be on hand to fight, muti late, butcher and kill each other to make Florentian holiday. We had thought that such sports had been long ago abandoned by the more civilized nations, were a thing of the past, and, at least, were coun tenanced only in Spain and Mexico, But here in the midst of the Christ ian land is published a prospectus of such a barbarous entertainment with inducements to people to at tend. Fifty dollars is to be awarded the winner on each fight and the side or State, which wins the great est number of fights is to receive a ! purse of five hundred dollars. July 24th and 35tn are the days set for the fights. ! Now is a fine opportunity for the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals to show its usefulness, and it is the duty of the officers of the law to put a stop to the whole business and to punish the offenders against the law for the prevention j of such cruelty. The steamer D. Murchison, com manded by Capt Robeson of the A P. Hurt, resumed her trisp on the river yesterday, arriving last even ing from Fayetteville. The Hurt is laid up at Fayetteville for repairs and repainting. We would advise our readers to stop at the Wilmington Shirt Fac tory and look at the largest stock and the most handsome styles of lawn tennis shirts in the city and at prices to suit everybody. The corner stone of the new gov ernment building was laid yesterday afternoon with the usual Masonic ceremonies by the Grand Lodge of the State. The Masonic fraternity in full regalia marched to tbe place in procession, headed by the Ger mania Cornet Band, arriving on the ground -shortly after 5 o'clock. Sev eral hundred spectators had assem bled to witness the proceedings, which-Were carried out in due form. Grand Master C. H. Robinson open ed the ceremonies with a brief address, stating the purpose for which the Grand Lodge had assem bled and read the orders, and after prayer by Rev. Mr. Primrose, the corner stone was lowered into place by means of the huge derrick, and a list of the articles to be placed in the box contained in the stone was read by the Grand Secretary, J. C. Chase, as follows: List of officers Grand Lodge State of North Caro lina; list of pro tem officers of Grand Lodge officiating at the ceremonies; list oLofficers and members of the three lodges participating; list of officers and members Concord Chapter Np. 1, R. A Masonic hymn was then sung by the choir, and the elements of consecration corn and wine and oil were poured from silver flagons on the stone, and after an invocation by the Grand Master, and the sing ing of a national ode "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," the orator of the oc casion, Rev. Mr. Creasy, was pre sented to the audience by the Grand Master. Mr. Creasy delivered an excellent address, which was listened to with profound attention throughout.
