Some weeks ago it was decided to make the occasion an event o. much so cial interest, to the many friends of the family as well as to their numer ous descendants, but severe sickness has been developed in the family and of course these intentions were at once abandoned. Nevertheless there were many who could not let the occasion pass without tendering warm congratulations on its occur rence, but these , congratulations were necessarily confined to the im- mediate family and connections. . j Colored B. and L,. A. Gaminell, Ksq. Col. J. G. Burr received a tele- gram yesterday from Charleston id forming him of the death in that city, on the evening of the 11th, of his nephew, Mr..Wm, A. Gammell, a native and former resident of this city. He was the only child of Mr. John Gammell, deceased, and grand, son of the late James Ancrum Berry. He had been in delicate health for some months but his relatives here did not anticipate his death at this time, as they hoped he had passed the crisis of his disease and was gradually improving. Mr. Gammell was born in Wilmington but reh moved to Savannah with his par ents many years ago, when quite young, where he had since resided. He carried Miss Ancrum,of Charles ton, and leaves a widow and four daughters to mourn his departure from earth. He was in the 45th year of his age and was a highly cultured gentleman, of polished manners, and possessed a peculiarly gentle and affectionate disposition that won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He was exemplary in the discharge of all the duties of day and Monday, suits pur business men exactly and is steadily growing in favor with the public. The trip up and .down in the cool of the even ing, a surf bath and a supper of Ben Perry's unequalled "pigs" are well worth twice the cost of same. Try it. - At Carolina Beach To-Day. The Germania Cornet Band went down to Carolina Beach to day, on the excursion advertised by them. The Band appeared on the streets for the first time in their new fatigue uniforms, which look handsome, cool and comfortable. At 9:30 the Sylvan Grove pulled out of her dock, crowd ed with passengers. She had more on her than we have noticed on any previous trip this season. At 2:30 she also carried down a large crowd. The Band, before leaving the city, paraded to the boat, and stopped at Market arid Front streets and ren dered a number of delightful pieces. A Fatal Fall. Mr. W. A. Corley, a carpenter employed at work on the building for the new cotton seed oil factory at Hilton, met with a fatal accident yesterday afternoon a few minutes before 6 o'clock. He was engaged with two other men in putting up the supports for the roof of the warehouse when he lost his balance and fell to the floor beneath, a dis tance of 18 feet, striking on his head. As soon as possible Capt Allen, the contractor, had him placed in his wagon and conveyed to his boarding: house, on Dock street, between Front and Second where surgical aid had been sum moned by telephone and was await ing his arrival. Everything possi ble was done for him but the injury proved fatal in about an hour. Mr. Corley came to Wilmington last Monday from Columbia, S. C, where he had been employed upon the new State building in that city He was a good workman and Gapt. Allen speaks very highly of him. He was about 35 or 40 years old and leaves a wife and children. His re mains were placed in a neat coffin and sent by the 10:10 train last night to his family in Columbia. Mr. C. A. McCraw, foreman of the men working upon the building, accom panied them. Graham Daves has favored us with a copy of the Daily Journal, of date Tuesday evening, June 7th, 1859. It belongs to a dead Dast just on the other side of "de big wah1' which is thedividing line to so many to day between the "used to was" and 'is now." The paper is ad dressed to Gov. Ellis, on whose staff Maj. Davis served at that time as Private Secretary. We reeognize there many familiar names, the large majority of which are, alas! of those who have crossed over the river and are now resting under the shade of the everlasting trees on the distant shore. There is a long and interesting account of the visit of President Buchanan to Chapel Hill and references made to the Wil mington Light Infantry, Col. E. D.
