A Healthy City. .Physicians report that the town is almost "distressingly healthy" now. The recent, epidemic of dys entery seems to have entirely pass ed away and there is but little sick ness otherwise than is incidental to the season. We are fast approach" ing the healthiest season of the year, July and August. It is a fact that these two months, right here on the seashore, are the healthiest of the entire year, a fact which we beg our up country friends to make a note of. A Three Story Jump. Mr. Wm. Bonitz has a pet dog which has a decided opinion of his own in most matters. In fact, he not only has opinions but he dares piaintain them. Yesterday he was accidentally shut up in a room on the third story of the hotel and not being able to crawl through the keyhole he concluded to leap for liberty through an open window. This he did and flighted on the awning above Messrs. Everitt & 01arke's store, on the ground floor, and from thence came safely to the pavement below, A Big Cotton Press. - The new press for the Champ ion Compress and Warehouse Com pany has arrived and the work of putting it in position will be at once proceeded with. It is a mammoth affair and it is calculated is of power sufficient to compress a bale of cot toh to a thickness (or a thinness) of only fiye inches. This, of course will not be done, but it is only men tioned to show the power of the press. The foundations are all ready. They are built on 200 piles, driven close together, and on these there is a structure in which 100,000 brick were used. The weight of the jjress is said to be 160 tons, or 320,000 pounds, and it took eight cars to bring it here. The cylinder is 7 feet in diameter. Onslow Items. A correspondent at Catherine Lake, Ouslow county, sends us a number of news scraps, which we collate as follows: ; There have been excellent seasons thus far in this section; the crops are very fine and the farmers are jubilant over the prospects. j Mr. Fonvous Pedrick, of Kinston, is visiting relatives in the village. j Mr. Mauger Jones killed near Catherine Lake on Saturday last a large rattlesnake with 14 rattles. I Misses Lucy Taylor and Katie Boggs have returned from the. Kin sey School and Miss Mqllie Duffy has returned from Clinton High School. We have just heard of the sad death of little Willie, son of Mr. Mack Marshburn, now of (Wilming ton.. Onr Farmers' Alliance met last Saturday in the school building at this place and Miss Lizzie A. Marsh burn delivered a very fine oration on that occasion. Mr. John Barker caught in the lake 17 perch w"ith one bait. Who can beat this? The old Lake is on a boom now and we are all listening intently to hear the screech of the locomotive. Mr. L. B. Pedrick will leave for Wilmington this (Tuesday) morning, with a fine lot of country produce for you town folks to eat. We have been assured here that the railroad from Wilmington to Jacksonville, via Sneed's Ferry, will be completed by the 7th of next December. In that event we will all call to see you. In fact. the Lake will empty itself into Wilmington, a prospect over which you need not be unduly alarmed. The street sweeping machine is here and is to be tested on the streets to night. It can be worked with either one or two horses. The city is.now in a good sanitary condition. We speak by authority. There are no epidenifcs.or ruiuors of epidemics anywhere, and we hope that there will be none this Summer. OPERA HOUSE. THURSDAY, JUNE 27. Mr. Wade H. Harriss, of. the Char lotte News, passed through the city to day on his return to Charlotte from a visit to his family at Atlantic View. There is a lot of yellow water in the river now, coming down from the upper Cape Fear, but Capt. Tomlinson reports that there is not much of a freshet, only four or five feet water on the shoals. The theatrical season will open here about the middle of September. There are quite a number of en gagements already booked and the season promises to be a lively one provided the railroad schedules for the Winter are favorable.
