Both Sent to Jail. The two cases before the Mayor yesterday afternoon, as we went to plress, and which were spoken of by us in that day's issue, were both sent on for trail before Judge Meares. One of these was H. R. Upchurch, charged with the larceny of money from one of the contrac tors of the C. F. & Y. V. R. R, and the other was Thos. Heyer, an old and highly esteemed citizen of this place, died yesterday afternoon of heart disease, in the (50th year of his age. Mr. Heyer was a native of Hanover, Germany, but had lived in this country nearly 40 years. His fu neral took place this afternoon from St. Paul's Evangeheal Lutheran Church. Mr. Heyer was, we think, a member of Co. A (German Volun teers) 18th N. C. Regiment. Arrived at Queenstown. Mr. Martin T. Davis received to day a cablegram from his brother, Mr. John C. Davis, dated at Queens town, saying that the party of delegates from this country to the World's Sunday School Convention, to be held at London, and who sailed from New York on the Cuuard steamship Bothnia, on Wednesday, the 19th inst., had arrived safe at Queenstown. Blood worth and A. H. Paddi son. It is intended to have a basket pic nic on the Fourth and everybody is invited. The good people of Burgaw are already mak raugements for the occasion. FOR THE FOURTH ! inyr ar- Confederate PensiouevsJ By an Act of the last Legislature the pensions heretofore granted to disabled ex Confederate soldiers are increased. But before any one can receive the benefit of it he must, on the first Monday in July, file with the county commissioners an applS cation as directed by the Act. Blanks for this purpose are furnish ed the register of deeds of every county. f The pensioners of this county are therefore hereby notified that -they must come here next Monday, and file the necessary ap Xlication, if they wish., their pen sions increased. The sheriff and clerk of the court together with the county commissioners constitute the pension board of the county. The Ex-Chiefs Badge. We saw this morning at the jewel ry store of Mr. M. J. Dingelhoef the gold badge that is to be presented to the ex-Chief of the Fire Depart ment, Mr. J. G. Oldenbuttel. It is of pretty design and beautiful work manship. The bar to which the pin is attached is a coupling hose; hang ing frm that by two small ehains is a circular plate, on which is en- graved: "Presented to J. G. Olden buttel, Chief of Fire Department, Wilmnigton, N. C." There is a steam fire engine engraved in the centre and pendant at the bottom is a fireman's trumpet. On the reverse of the badge is the legend: "From Atlantic and Adrian F. E. Cos." The G. C. & N. Bonds. An advance of a cent and a half was bid on these bonds in Baltimore within two days after they were taken. The Baltimore bun of Thurs day says: The issue of $2,860,000 first mort gage five per cent, gold bonds of the Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway Company was completely absorbed in this city and New York on Monday. The subscription in this city at the banking house of Alex. Brown & Sons amounted to 3,400,000, and in New York to over $6,000,000, making over $10,000,000 in all. For some cause not yet learn ed here, the subscription list was not opened in London, as had been arranged. The subscription price was 97f, aud in cities twice as much was subscribed as the owners expected. Baltimore was not looks ed wp6n as likely to take more than $2,000,000. Owing to the large de mand, the bonds will have to be allotted pro rata, and the quantity for each subscriber will be fixed to morrow. The new line is brought into con nection with Portsmouth by the Seaboard & Roanoke and Raleigh 4 Gaston Railroads; with Baltimore by the Baltimore Steam Packet Company, and with New York by the Old Dominion Line of outside steamers. The bonds run for thirty vears. and cannot be redeemed be fore maturity. Although these new bonds 'are not listed at t he Balti mnre Stock Exchange, they were ! ! We will have in larger supplies of Beer than usual to meet the demand on the Fourth of July. At the same time we expect largely increased sales and we would suggest that orders for that day be sent in in advance, both for city and country trade. First Open-Ai i Concert. . Notwithstanding the bad weather the Germania Cornet Band gave their promised concert last night in the City Hall Park. There was a large turnout to hear them, many ladies having been present. The programme was given as published by us in Thursday's Review. They ave some charming music and evidenced great improvement.
