At a meeting of the employes held at the C. C. R. R. shops, at Laurin burgr July 13th; 1889, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted:-. - I- ; Whereas, Col. L. C. Jones, bur friead and Superintendent, of the Carolina Central Railroad, has been removed by Him who is too wise to err, too good to be unkind. There, fore be it i Resolved lst That in the death of Col. L. C. Jones we h ave sustained an irreparable; loss, j Wj will no more hear the I kind (arid cheerful tone of his voice or feel the warm grasp of his kindly hand. He aU ways had a kind word and pleasant smile for every one. His high posi tion which he held made no change in him. If any, it only-made him more amiable, more generous and kind. ! JRcisoljwd 2nd, That while we deep ly deplore the death of our beloved Superintendent we shall, ever re- vere his memory and I bow in sub- mission to jfche will of Him doeth all things well. I who Resolved 'Srd That we extend to the family ot I the deceased our in this their heartfelt sympathies sad bereavement. Resolved 4th, That a copy of these resolutions be 1 presented to the family of the deceased and to the Wilmington and Jonesboro papers for publication. j Capt. Jas, Maglenn, p. R. KTHRIDGE, Or. W. GOODWYN, S. J. HUNTER,, I Committee. In Menioriam. A meeting of the members of the Produce Exchange was held at noon to-day to take action in regard to the death of Col. L. C. Jones, who was a ; member of that body, . The following is the ofRaial report; This (Sxohange having heard with regret of the death of Col. L. C. Jones, one of its members,: and Superintendent of the Carolina Central Railroad, desires to put on record its high appreciation of him. both as a man and an official; there fore be it 'Resolved, That rarely is any bust' ness organization called upon to give expression to such sentiments of genuine sorrow as 1 is the "Wil mington Produce Exchange" on this occasion.. And it is eminently proper that in lamenting the decease of one so peculiarly sincere, only true feelings should abound. We are deeply impressed with the fact that inthe'death af Col. L. C. Jones ! this organization has lost a valuable member, and each of us a friend.' j j For many years has he been: de, voting much of kis untiring energy in developing the resources of this wholeLsection, and Wilmington is largely indebted to his ability for material progress. Her interests were ever carefully watched and intelligently guarded by him, and his influence was exercised 'only for her good, i I ' While possessed of dignity, be it truly said, that in courtesy and refined civility no man could excel biro. Genial of temper and easily approached, his friends were many and confined to no class . He merit ed and retained the' respect of all with whom he camel in contaot. Though strictly attentive to the minutest details of business, his courtesy in his own office to all stamped him clearly the gentleman and pronounced him the model official. I Keenly compassionate, neva er did business pressure prevent a kindly consideration of all claims upon his sympathy or j means. His sense Of equity was most acute, and all forms of injQstice and aggress ion were abhorrent tb him. With a profound contempt forshams or artifices he lived an honorabe, ifftan I life, i Discerning the true, issues of existence he bent his energies to the pe.tterment ot bis fellows. . Such in brief are the salient points In the character of our late eom panion and friend j and in commem oration of sqcU an embodiment of manly virtue ' j jBe it further resolved, That a page be left on our journal, with his name only inscribed thereon, I and that a copy of the foregoing be sent Id his family and be published in the daily newspapers of this city. ! A Monster Sawfish, xnree targe r sawnsu were; cap tured a few days ago in Mri Van Sutton's seines in the river, opposite Bald Head, and almost directly in the inlet. The largest of these was 14 feet long, including the saw. Mr, Sutton brought the saw of this fish to the city and by a careful meas urement we found it to be 3 feet, 6 inches in length. It had just 50 teeth.! It is an interesting curiosity and Mr. Sutton will keep it as a trophy to show his up-country friends. - ; An Extensive Vineyard. -- But few people in this city iin agine , what an extension vineyard Capt. S. W. Nobles hasjat his farm a few inilesEast of this city. It is proba ble that there are hot many vine yards in North Carolina that exceed it. He has 125 aeres in cultivation and there are 150,000 grape vines in all, nearly all of which are bearing. the old Newbern road, on a part of what is known as the old Hamil ton place, there are 30,000 new vines now in their third year, and some of which are already bearing fruit. In a few years more Capt. Nobles will probably reap a rich reward from these, as well as from other parts of his extensi ve vineyard. We are glad to learn from him that the earlier prospects for a good grape yield thi'a year are already being realized. : .. ... -: . TWUiUou, MUls. .
