The Herald and the Star are not in the fight. The former seems to be coldly indifferent to the outcome but the Star star is fighting valiauMyfor the rights of the print ers. - A terrible tale of the destruction of 8,700 houses and a loss of 1,000 lives comes to us from China. A special from San Francisco says: The steamer Belgic, from Hong Kong and Yokohoma, whieh ir rived here to day, brings word that a repent fire at Lu Chow destroyed 8,700 houses, while over 1,200 per sons were burned to death and 400 others killed. Nearly 170,000 uoonle were made homeless and at last ac counts were camping out without shelter and were dying at the rate of 100 a day from want and expos ure. The authorities were proyid1 ing for their .-necessities! Yesterday's New York Star says; It was announced yesterday that the Tax Commissioners have been able to fix upon a lower rate than ha been known in New York,; with two exceptions, in over a quarter of a century. President Coleman and his colleaguesy Commissioners Feit ner and Parris, after close scrutiny and investigation of the real and personal property owned by the citizens, have decided upon 1.95 as the correct figure for 1889, which is .27 lower than in 1888, .21' lower than in 1887 and .34 lower , than in 1886. The two lowest comparisons which can be made in the time men tioned are those in 1860, when the rate was 1,695, and 1862, when it was 1.75. 1 Bishop Seymour, of Illinois, was quietly married on Tuesday morn ing in New York city. The Herald furnishes the full account: The Right Rev. George F. Sey mour, Bisnop of the Western Dio cese of Illinois, was married yester day morning at Trinity Church to MrsrMary Atwood Aymar, of Jersey City. The wedding was strictly pri vate, only the near relatives of the bride and bridegroom being present twelve in number. The ceremony was performed by Right Rev. Bishop Potter, assisted by Rev. Dr. Morgan Dix. The Episcopal marriage service was given without music. The bride was attired in a plain traveling suit of dark brown material, which was in keeping with the quiet appear ance of the staid old church. There wore no flowers, and in compliance with the wish of the. bridegroom everything was made as unostenta tious as possible. Indeed until an hour before the ceremony the sexton of the church knew nothing of the approaching marriage. It is just a little over nine years ago that the bridegroom was conse crated bishop in the same church in which he was yesterday married. Bishop Seymour ii an old New Yorker and was graduated from Columbia College in 1850. After bein'g ordained a minister, four years later, he was assigned to duty in Brooklyn. For several years he was rector of a church in West. Chester county. For several years before being elected bishop he wa dean of the' faculty of Columbia College. He Hi now in his 57th year. His bride is several years his junior and is well known in Jersey City society, and was one of the leading church women of that place. Headquarters for Sash, Doors and Builders Supplies is the N. Night before last, at the Ocean View Dining Rooms, Mrs. Mayo en tertained a party of 35 Jewish ladies and gentlemen at supper. The par ty was made up in the city and spent the afternoon and evening on the beach, winding up with one of Mrs. Mayo's famous fish suppers. A large colored excursion came in this morning from Columbia. There was a brass band and a base ball club in the crowd. The Passport took down to Southport as many of them as she could accommodate, others went down on the Seacoast trains, while still others remained over m the city. The Fifth Street M. E. Sunday School will give an excursion to Carolina Beach to morrow. The boat will leave at the usual hours but those wishing a day of real pleasure are advised to take the 9.30 boat. The management will do all that is possible to make it pleasant for everybody. j ' ! Progress. Capt. J. T. Oglesby, of Charleston, S. C, a conductor on the A. C. Line running 1 between this city and Charleston, was among the visitors at Carolina Beach yesterday. It was the first time he had been there and he was so much pleased witli the place that he says that he will at once bring on his family, who are now at Charleston, and have tbem spend the balance of the Summer at the Beach. lleduced Hates for the Firemen. The Seaboard Air Line has .or dered on sale round trip tickets at reduced rates on account of the arraud Firemen's Tournament to be held in Raleigh August 13th and 14th. Tickets will be on sale from August 12th to 13th inclusive and will be good for the return trip until August 15 til. Tickts will be as follows from the points named: Wil mington $5; Charlotte $4.75; Ruth erfordtou $6.50; Weldon $3.25; Hen derson $1.80; Sanford $1.80; Maxton $3.70; Shelby $5.75. An Fxcellent Idea. We understand that Mr. Jno. F. Garrell will, on Or about the first of August, erect a large refrigerator on the vacant lot next North of Front street market. This refrigerator will be of a size sufficient to hold two car loads of meat. Mr. Garrell's idea is to receive direct from West ern North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee live beef in car load lots and to slaughter it here as it may be needed, putting it in the refrig erator just long enough to make it tender. The meat will be slaught ered only as it is required and thus the market can be provided for, day by day, With6ut overstocking it. The meat will not touch the ice in the refrigerator anr will not be in any wise injured by being kept there. A Good Old Democrat. An itemizer for the Review tells us of a sturdy old patriot he met on the W. & Wrtrain, going out from the city, a few days ago. He wasi 86 years of age and said that it was the first time he had ever traveled on a railroad. He lost three sons in the late war, all, of course, in the Confederate ranks, and he is a cousin of i John Grady, of Duplin county, the only man who was kill ed among the Whigs at the battle of Moore's Creek, February 2711 1776. He has always voted the straight Democratic ticket, and no other and hopes to live long enough to vote for Groyer Cleveland again in 1892. lie left the train at Golds boro and our informant neglected to give us his name. j Scribner's for August. Scribrier8 Magazine for August is a most seasonable issue, containing spirited outdoor papers on the game of lawn tennis and on tarpon fish ing; two papers on Tennyson, whose eightieth birthday is thus commemr. orated; short stories by H. The former were discharged with a rep rimand and the latter were disposed of in the usual way. At Carolina Beacli. Improvement is still the order of the day at Carolina Bach. There is already a village there and on every succeeding visit we find something new. There are now twelve cottages at the Beach, all comfortable and all with a sea front, and three more were begun yesterday. Two streets have already been laid out. Capt. Harper has already christened one as Ocean View.but as the other has not yet received a name we will cal it Germania avenue, as it leads direct from the pavilion which has been erected for the band. The State Farmers Alliance. The North Carolina State Farm ers' Alliance meets in annual session in Fayetteviile, August 12th, and will continue in session several days. On this account the Seaboard Air Line will sell tickets from all points to Fayetteviile at reduced rates for the roumd trip. Tickets go on ' sale from Augast 11th to 15th and wilr be good to return unti4 August 17th" The fare for the round trip will be as follows from the points named: From Wilmington, $4.60; Charlotte, $4.85; Raieigh, $3.20; Weldon, $3.95; Henderson, $4.60; Sanford, $1.60; Rutherfordton, 6.35; Shelby, $6.10. A Liberal Offer. The management of the Wilming ton Seacoast Railroad, appreciating the situation of our poor,- will do nate five hundred tickets for tlieir use frojii Wilmington to Hammocks and return. These tickets will be furnished from Prineess street office on application' of any minister of the various churches, or officers of the Fresh Air Fund Benevolent So ciety, and will be good on any train until September 30, 1889. This is an excellent and a liberal move on Capt. Nolan's part, and no doubt it will be highly appreciated by those for whose benefit it is in tended. , The Irrepressible Burglar. An unsuccessful attempt was made jLbout daylight this morning to burglarize the residence of Mr. J. D. Hodges on Walnut, between MacRae and Ninth streets. The honse was entered throught a win dow opening into an adjoining yard, Against this window was a bed on which several of Mr. Hodges' child ren were sleeping- In the same room an elder daughter slept. She( awoke and saw the man and scream ed for her father. Mr. Hodges rushed into the reom when the ras cal jumped through a window and made his escape. Mr. Hodges says that he was colored and wore a soft hat and russet shoes. eaassflBHBOBBflnaaai TRIBUTE OF BKSPI2CT. Whereas.
