Wide Awake for August is an open air number, full of things to be done out-of-doors; geologizing and the making of wild flower books. The number is largely written by travelers and sight-seers. Mrs. Fre mont describes her "Camping near the Giant Trees" in the early CalU fornia days. "In the Meadows at Trianon" tells of a somewhat pecu. liar visit to the famous playground of Marie Antoinette and her Court "Queen Mary's Child Garden" gives an account of a day on the islet of inchmahome where Mary, Queen of Scots, abodefer a time when she was a little girl. "Fishing in Tweed and Yarrow," with its beautiful engravings of the historic river scenery, is a most; readable paper. Then there is a touching melodious ballad by Mrs, Harriet Prescott Spoffbrd. The story element, is of fine quality. In the Peppers serial a mysterious pleasure is hinted at for bonnie Polly j Pepper; and in "Sybil Fair's Fairness" young Mr. Harvard turns out pretty well, after all. "Gul Baba, 'Father of Roses,'' is one of the best of the folk tales of Hungary. "How Long Pond Ran Away'1 describes a disaster in Ver mont many years ago. "Bin" is a charming story. "Tim Faraday and the Two Aurjoras"! is an amasing political story. The poems of the number are all good. $2.40 a year. D. Th'e friends of the University will doubtless cordially approve this provision for the physical instruc! tion of pupils. The best institutions all have teachers specially qualified for this purpose. Many bright young men have; found their intel lectual training of little value be cause of the neglect of bodily health!. Systematic exercise of the bodyi such exprcite as is adapted to the peculiarities of the individual, i absolutely, necessary to secure a sound and vigorous constitution Th Teachers Abroad. " The Glasgow Daily Mail gives this write up of the North Carolina teachers abroad: "There are at present on a visit to Glasgow ond hundred and twenty teachers of schools, from North Carolina. Theyi arrived on Thursday evening at thej Tail of Lthe Bank ner State liner Nevada,! and book up their head quarter in the Central Station Ho tel. Their tour lasts for six weeks during which time they will visit the most interesting places in the countryJ They call themselves the "North Carolina Teachers' Assem-i bly," and are under the charge of Major Eugene G. Harrell, who has arranged daily excursions: for them They are here with the combined object of pleasure, health and prac tical experience, and doubtless they will be successful in all these re spects, especially from an educa tional point of view; while they wil obtain many practical hints useful to them in their calling of instruct ing the children of the State. As the teachers from the other side of the Atlantic have never visited us in a body before, it is very unfortu nate that they have come at a time when all the public schools here are closed, as they are therefore de barred from seeing the methods adopted in our schools. They are a very enthusiastic and in fluential body, and every year they hold meetings, lasting a week, in Morehead City, when they discuss educational matters. These meetsngs are generally largely at tended, about one thousand teachers of both sexes from all parts of the State being present. Yesterdaytbey visited the land o' Burns the Mec ca of many Americans and return ed to the city in the evening. To day they visit the Cathedral and the University; while Loch Lomond and the Trossachs will also be trav ersed in the course of next week; Afterwards they proceed to Edin burgh, and thence to Abbottsford, and on to London, where they spend a week. They cross to-Paris, their; stay in the continental capital last-! ing for several days. They return to Glasgow and, it is probable, as most of the Board schools will then have reopened for the season, that they will have an opportunity of seeing the scheme of education adopted in our schools. From Glas gow they go to Belfast and Lon donderry; and after a few days' stay there they will again set sail for America. j ; j Ills, Wills and Pills. I . - An odd mixture" oT words, but the sufferer from constipation, indiges tion, impure blood, biliousness and other " such ills, can be cured if he wills without taking the horrid, old fashioned pills.
